MISL News Release

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

TAMPA, Fla. – The Major Indoor Soccer League announced on Tuesday that Missouri Comets forward Tiguinho had been named the league’s Player of the Week for the 13th week of the 2011-12 season. Tiguinho led the way for the Comets with nine points, including five assists, as Missouri set a new season-high for points in a game with 33 in its victory against the Syracuse Silver Knights this past Wednesday.

Tiguinho had a hand in three consecutive goals as the Comets built a commanding lead in the first half against Syracuse. He first assisted on Byron Alvarez’s goal with just less than five minutes to play in the first quarter, then scored himself with 42 seconds to play before the end of the period. He then turned playmaker again as Geison scored 2:03 into the second quarter.

The Brazilian then added another three assists in the second half, and capped his performance with his second goal of the game midway through the fourth quarter. The performance moved him onto 21 points in nine games this season after re-joining the Comets midway through December. In addition to setting a new season-high for points in a game, the 33 points was also a new high in the Comets’ franchise history. The combined total of 45 points in the contest was also the highest recorded in the 2011-12 season.

Other players considered for the weekly award included Milwaukee’s Ian Bennett, who had a hat trick as the Wave claimed Coach Keith Tozer’s 700th victory on Sunday. Tiguinho’s Missouri teammates Geison, who had a four-goal night, and Byron Alvarez, who had seven points, also had standout performances. Geison continues to lead the league in points with 69, while Alvarez is third with 55. Baltimore’s Machel Millwood also had a strong weekend, recording seven points in a pair of victories for the Blast that allowed them to seal their place in the MISL Playoffs.

The MISL season continues with three games this week, beginning on Wednesday night as the Baltimore Blast try to seal home-field advantage for the MISL Eastern Division Finals with a victory against the Norfolk SharX. The game at 1st Mariner Arena is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. ET kickoff, with the game also available on MISL Live (www.misllivesoccer.com), the league’s free online video service.

There are two games on Saturday night, with the Milwaukee Wave hosting a rematch of the 2011 Championship Series against the Baltimore Blast at U.S. Cellular Arena at 7 p.m. ET. The Blast won the first meeting of the season, and this game should be a must-see on MISL Live. Also on Saturday night, the Rochester Lancers continue their pursuit of an Eastern Division playoff place as they make their first trip to Wichita to face the Wings at 8:35 p.m. ET at Hartman Arena.
