BRADENTON, Fla. – Eli Garner scored his third goal of the day as Team Neo took a 2-0 victory against Team GT in both teams’ second scrimmage at the USL PRO Combine presented by Umbro at IMG Academies.
Both teams took a while to settle, and it took until the 17th minute for the first clear chance for either. Neo’s Eric Goldberg picked up the ball on the left side of the penalty area, but his low near-post shot was parried away for a corner by Zac Lubin.
Neo’s Nestor Hernandez also had a chance three minutes later, only to shoot wide, but in the 29th minute, Garner struck, turning his defender well before finishing well.
Team GT had good spells as well, Lance Nelson firing a free kick over the crossbar and Daniel Fabian hitting a strong shot just wide of the right post. At times, though, the possession broke down too easily, and possession was lost cheaply.
As legs began to tire, the second half produced little in the way of chances. Lubin saved well from Hernandez 13 minutes after the break, but GT wasn’t able to produce much in the way of chances at the other end. Them with six minutes to go Neo got their second, an own goal being turned into Lubin’s goal off a corner from the left.
