ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando City announced today the signing of English midfielder John Rooney, pending USSF approval. Rooney is a versatile midfielder capable of playing multiple positions, giving the Lions additional depth to an already strong midfield corps.
“I’ve known John for a long time, from the early days in England,” said Head Coach Adrian Heath. “We’re delighted to have him. He’ll be a really good piece for us. He can play multiple positions in the midfield, which is a very good thing for us.”
Although only 21 years old, Rooney brings four full seasons of professional experience to Orlando. After beginning his career in Everton’s youth system, Rooney made is pro debut with English League Two side Macclesfield Town as a 17-year old. He spent three seasons with the Silkmen before entering himself in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft. In total, Rooney made 45 appearances with Macclesfield, and scored three goals.
Rooney was drafted in the second round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft by the New York Red Bulls. During the Red Bulls 2011 campaign, he made five regular season appearances and two Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup appearances. He scored his only goal of 2011 against F.C. New York in the Open Cup.
