ST. LOUIS, Mo. – 2011 Carolina Dynamo standout Andrew Wenger has been named College Soccer’s MAC Hermann Trophy Award Winner as the best player in college soccer this past season. Wenger was one of three finalists, being named the winner tonight at the Missouri Athletic Club.
Wenger becomes the second Dynamo player in the past five years to win the award. Marcus Tracy was the other former Dynamo player to win the award, being named college soccer’s best player in 2008. This past season with the Dynamo, Wenger split his time on the field as both a defender and a forward, seeing action in eight games and scoring two goals for the USL PDL South Atlantic Division Champions. He had previously played in the USL PDL for Reading United.
Wenger, who played NCAA soccer at Duke University, is the only player in Atlantic Coast Conference history to earn both Defender of the Year and Attacking Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons. He was also named 1st Team All-ACC and 1st Team All-American as a forward this past season, leading the ACC in scoring with 17 goals and eight assists totaling 42 points.
Wenger recently decided to forgo his senior season at Duke to enter the Major League Soccer Superdraft as part of the Generation Adidas program, and is considered one of the top prospects in next Thursday MLS SuperDraft, to be held in Kansas City, Mo. as part of the NSCAA Convention.
