CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston Battery have agreed to terms with defender Kyle Hoffer, pictured right, and midfielder Jose Cuevas. Hoffer transfers to the Battery after a successful rookie pro season with FC New York that saw him earn USL PRO All-League Second Team honors. Cuevas spent the 2011 pre-season with the Battery appearing in the Carolina Challenge Cup games before signing with the USL PDL’s Fresno Fuego for the 2011 season. Both Hoffer and Cuevas sign with the Battery subject to USL and USSF approval.
A native of Englewood N.J., Hoffer (6-foot-1, 175 lbs., 22 yrs.) began his college soccer career at the State University of New York at Oneonta, where he was named rookie of the year, before transferring to St. John's University prior to his sophomore year.
“Kyle had a very successful season with FC New York and we are looking forward to him building upon his growth as a defender at the professional level. It is good to get a player that has played in our league as this helps with experience and knowledge of the other players and teams” said Mike Anhaeuser, Battery Head Coach.
Hoffer played 22 games for FC New York in 2011 scoring two goals. At the end of the 2011 USL PRO season, Hoffer was loaned to Finnish second division side Ekenäs IF. During his college years he also played with the Brooklyn Knights in the USL Premier Development League.
Jose Cuevas impressed the Battery coaching staff at the 2011 USL Men’s Player Combine and spent most of the 2011 pre-season with the Battery appearing in the Carolina Challenge Cup games. Cuevas returned to the PDL’s Fresno Fuego for the 2011 season after playing for them in 2009 and 2010.
A native of Farmersville, Calif., Cuevas (5-foot-8, 150 lbs, 22 yrs.) had a stellar season with Fresno in 2011 scoring nine goals and adding two assists and was selected to the All-Western Conference team.
“Jose is a young and talented midfield or forward player that was with us last pre-season. We are looking for Jose to have a break-out professional year as he builds upon his successful PDL season with Fresno in 2011” said Anhaeuser.
The Charleston Battery kick off their 20th Anniversary Season with the Carolina Challenge Cup tournament February 29-March 3 at Blackbaud Stadium, which features Major League Soccer’s D.C. United, Columbus Crew and Chicago Fire.
