TAMPA, Fla. – The Major Indoor Soccer League announced on Tuesday that Baltimore Blast forward Machel Millwood had been named the league’s Player of the Week for the seventh week of the 2011-12 season. Millwood had 11 points as the Blast took a pair of victories during the weekend, bolstering their lead at the top of the Eastern Division.
Milwood had a goal and an assist in the Blast’s 17-9 victory against the Missouri Comets at 1st Mariner Arena on Friday night. His second-quarter goal put the Blast ahead 6-4, a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Then on Sunday afternoon Millwood had an eight-point game to lead the Blast to a 19-8 victory against the Norfolk SharX. With the Blast trailing in the second quarter, Millwood’s back-to-back goals, including a 3-pointer, gave his side the lead before he completed his hat trick in the third quarter.
Millwood moved into a tie for fourth place in the league at 30 points with his pair of strong performances, and is a contender for the league’s Offensive Player of the Month having tallied 20 points in the month of December.
Other players considered for the weekly award included Norfolk’s Matt Delicate, who scored the first hat trick in franchise history in the SharX’s loss to the Blast. The Rochester Lancer’s Andrew Hoxie also had a good return to action after injury, scoring five points in his side’s 18-14 win against Syracuse that moved the Lancers back into second place in the Easter Division. Missouri’s Tiguinho also merited consideration, recording a five-point night in his return to the Comets’ lineup against Baltimore.
The MISL season continues with a pair of games this week, with the Norfolk SharX travelling to face the Rochester Lancers at 7 p.m. on Thursday night at Blue Cross Arena. After taking victory against in-state rival Syracuse this past weekend, the Lancers are aiming for victory to remain in second place in the Eastern Division
On Friday night the Syracuse Silver Knights host the Missouri Comets at the Oncenter looking to bounce back from their last outing, and will hope to earn some revenge for the defeat the Comets handed them in their first meeting of the season.
