MPS Portland Phoenix News Release -- www.mainepremiersoccer.com

Tuesday, May 3, 2011

PORTLAND, Maine -- The MPS Portland Phoenix has brought in plenty of firepower with a talented group of forwards with new faces adding to some returning stars from the 2010 season.

A new face for the 2011 season is Charlie Rugg, a standout forward from Boston College. The Massachusetts native was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference's First Team and was also a NSCAA Second Team All-Region selection. Accompanying Rugg is Parker Duncan from the University of Memphis. Duncan led the Tigers in individual points the last two seasons and was selected to the Conference USA All-Academic team after a strong season in 2010.

A third new face for the Phoenix this year is target forward Aaron Schoenfeld. The Atlantic Sun All-Conference Second Teamselection comes in following a strong season for East Tennessee State.

Returning to the Phoenix include attacker Bryan Gaul and Nick Weightman, who both contributed massively to the club's 2010 success. Gaul is a versatile player who comes in off the back of a standout year for Bradley which saw him selected to Missouri Valley Conference First Team and all Midwest Region First Team. Weightman returns after a very productive year in 2010 where he was an instrumental player scoring eight goals and adding two assists for the Phoenix.

The Phoenix have also added local talent in the form of Trevor Hoxsie, a former standout for Scarborough High Cchool before moving on to play for Utica College and being named an All-State and All-New England selection in 2009.

The MPS Portland Phoenix open the 2011 USL PDL Northeast division with a home game against the New Hampshire Phantoms at Deering High School on May 7th, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased on matchdays, or for ticket packages contact Sam Maddams at sam@mainepremiersoccer.com.

USL News Release

Tuesday, May 3, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. – United Soccer Leagues announced the USL PRO Team of the Week for Week 5 of the 2011 season today, honoring Antigua Barracuda FC forward Peter Byers as Player of the Week after the Antiguan international provided a dominant attacking presence in the club’s three road victories last week.

Byers scored four goals in the first half as Antigua romped to a 7-0 victory against Puerto Rico United, and then proved a constant threat in each of the ‘Cudas 1-0 victories against River Plate Puerto Rico and the Los Angeles Blues that saw the side jump to the top of the USL PRO International Division.

A pair of Byers’ teammates were also honored this week, as goalkeeper Keita De Castro and defender George Dublin held things down at the back as Antigua recorded shutouts in all three games.

The Richmond Kickers maintained their perfect start to the season, and the duo of midfielder David Bulow and forward Matt Delicâte were both named to the Team of the Week after their respective performances in a 6-0 defeat of Dayton. Bulow scored twice for the Kickers, while Delicâte had a goal and two assists to make him the first player to reach double-digit points for the season.

The Charleston Battery and Wilmington Hammerheads also had a pair of players named to the team, with the Battery’s stalwart defender John Wilson earning his second Team of the Week nod after the Battery conceded one goal in two games and teammate Nicki Paterson being honored after his goal and assist helped the Battery defeat the Charlotte Eagles on Friday night.

The Hammerheads are represented by defender Ivan Becerra, who proved a stabilizing force for Wilmington in its 3-1 victory against Pittsburgh. Midfielder Paul Nicholson is also honored for his game-winning goal in the same match.

Rounding out the team is Orlando City’s Lewis Neal, who was named to the Team of the Week for the second time this season after his game-winning goal to lift the Lions past F.C. New York on Saturday, and Puerto Rico United’s Mauricio Turizo, whose goal proved the difference in a 3-2 victory against Sevilla FC Puerto Rico on Friday night.

USL News Release

Wednesday, May 4, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. – United Soccer Leagues announced today that New York Cosmos U23 will field a team in the Premier Development League (PDL), and will become a full member for the 2012 season. New York Cosmos U23 will play a limited exhibition schedule against PDL competition during the 2011 season, and will not be eligible for the playoffs or the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The PDL franchise will be led by longtime USL player/coach Giovanni Savarese, who is also a member of the 2007 USL Hall of Fame. A coaching announcement, along with the full roster and schedule will be posted by mid-May on www.uslsoccer.com and www.newyorkcosmos.com.

After a 25-year absence, The New York Cosmos were relaunched in August 2010 with Pelé named Honorary President. One of the most recognizable soccer clubs in the world. The New York Cosmos took America, and subsequently the world, by storm in the 1970s and 1980s by bringing in top stars such as Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer, Carlos Alberto and Giorgio Chinaglia to play an entertaining brand of soccer that captivated fans.

Currently, the club’s international ambassadors include Chinaglia and Alberto. Former France and Manchester United forward Eric Cantona serves as director of soccer and former United States international Cobi Jones is associate director of soccer and ambassador.

“We are excited to have one of the top names in world soccer joining the Premier Development League,” USL CEO Alec Papadakis said. “New York Cosmos U23 is led by experienced and ambitious management who know how to run a first-class operation, and their participation will only strengthen the thriving PDL presence in the greater New York area. This relationship is a natural progression based on their strong relationship with Umbro, USL’s most important and longest standing partner.”

The New York Cosmos operate Cosmos Academy East (based out of Queens, N.Y.) and Cosmos Academy West (based out of Pomona, Calif.), with both participating in the United States Soccer Development Academy program. This emphasis on youth development fits perfectly with the PDL model, which focuses on continuing the development of elite players beyond the youth level.

“We are excited to be a part of the USL family and are putting forth the dedication and resources necessary at every level within our organization to rebuild The New York Cosmos in the right away,” said Paul Kemsley, Chairman, The New York Cosmos. “Our New York Cosmos U23 team is a natural extension to our Cosmos Academy and further reinforces our commitment to developing young, talented players. Our academy players will have a chance to play amongst some experienced and competitive PDL teams and we look forward to a full season in 2012 and beyond.”

The premier U23 men’s league in North America, the USL Premier Development League features 64 teams within four conferences across the United States and Canada in 2011. The PDL provides elite collegiate players the opportunity to taste a higher level of competition while maintaining their eligibility.

Upon officially joining the PDL for 2012, New York Cosmos U23 will enhance the already strong PDL presence in the greater New York area and have a wealth of natural rivals. Among the current PDL clubs based nearby are the Brooklyn Knights, Long Island Rough Riders and Westchester Flames.

The top supplier of talent for professional soccer in North America, the PDL saw another large group of its alumni make the move into professional soccer recently with 37 of the 54 players selected in the 2011 Major League Soccer SuperDraft having previously played in the PDL. A remarkable eight of the first 10 selections in the draft had PDL experience.

W-League Northeast Division Preview

The New York Magic have big things on their mind in 2011. The Magic finished the 2010 strong and are looking to carry over that run of form into 2011. Much of New York’s success last season boiled down to their pacey forward Rashidah Sherman.

“I don’t know anyone that can keep up with her in this league,” said Magic Head Coach Nino DePasquali about Sherman.

Sherman averaged a remarkable goal-per-game and captured the W-League’s Rookie of the Year award in her debut W-League campaign. But while the Magic finished 2010 near the top of the W-League scoring chart, they finished near the bottom of the defensive chart, something the club is addressing head-on in 2011.

New York has brought in a new goalkeeper and three new defenders to help shore up their backline. But, New York isn’t forgetting what drove some of their success last season.

“We are going to rely as much on the returning players as much as the new ones,” said President Lyndelle Phillips.

New York is wary of the threat their division poses, as every team in the Northeast division has been busy assembly talented squads to challenge the Magic. Despite this, New York’s goal remains singular for 2011.

“I believe we can give a good run at [the division] this season,” added DePasquali. “Anything less than a division title will be disappointing.”

D.C. United Women

This is the first season for the new D.C.-based W-League franchise. Given its MLS namesake and the pedigree of past Washington W-League sides, D.C. United will have lofty expectations in its first season.

Currently, D.C. United Women’s roster is still being finalized, but with all the talent in the surrounding area the side should be instantly competitive in its first season. Like the last Washington team, D.C. United Women will also make its home at the Maryland Soccerplex.

Long Island Rough Riders

After a couple a mixed seasons, in 2011 the Rough Riders will look to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Head Coach Steve Cadet’s side is always laden with plenty of talent and will need his defense to put in a similar effort in 2011 after only conceding 14 goals in 2010.

Last season the Rough Riders came within one point of a playoff spot. After a few matches that could have gone the other way in 2010, Long Island will look to make the jump to the playoffs in 2011.

New Jersey Rangers

Last season marked the debut of the Rangers in the W-League, entering one of the toughest divisions in the league. Luckily for the Rangers, being based in New Jersey gives the club a fantastic player pool to draw from in the talent-rich Garden State.

The Rangers earned an impressive four wins last season, the best among any rookie W-League franchise. After gaining a year of experience the Rangers will look to improve that mark this season.

New Jersey Wildcats

The Wildcats had an impressive 2010 season, collecting 22 points and making a run at the division leaders. Ultimately, the Wildcats fell in the W-League playoffs to Atlanta. This season the Wildcats will be gunning for another playoff birth and a higher finish in the division.

New Jersey needs to replicate their fast start to the 2010 season which saw them collect wins in five of its first seven matches. The Wildcats could not hold their run of form late, dropping four of their last six matches. This season, New Jersey has to start and finish strong to avoid its previous mistakes.

North Jersey Valkyries

2010 was the inaugural season for the Valkyries and the learning curve proved to be steep for the first year side. North Jersey played a number of close matches in its first season, but could not notch the club’s first win.

The Valkyries will have to ramp up their offensive production in 2011 if they hope to make an impact in the Northeast Division.

Pittsburgh Riverhounds News Release -- www.riverhounds.com

Wednesday, May 4, 2011

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Pittsburgh Riverhounds (1-2-1) will host a Japan Relief Fund this Friday, May 6th for their game against the Charleston Battery (3-1-1). The American Red Cross of Southwestern Pennsylvania and the Japan Association of Greater Pittsburgh (JAGP) will be present for the event.

The Riverhounds will be raising funds based on an original T-Shirt sale. The caricature design was inspired from an action photo of Shintaro Harada. The Riverhounds organization believes that it is only fitting to help Japan by any means possible.

The “We’re full of Shin” T-Shirt will be available for purchase on game day. The cost for each T-Shirt is $20, with all proceeds being donated to the American Red Cross.

Members of the JAGP will take part in the opening ceremonies Friday, by performing the National Anthem and walking out with the Riverhounds and Battery.

Pittsburgh Riverhounds News Release -- www.riverhounds.com

Thursday, May 5, 2011

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Riverhounds (1-2-1) return home to Chartiers Valley Stadium this Friday for a game against the Charleston Battery (3-1-1). The two clubs will meet for the second time in less than a week, with last Saturday’s game at Blackbaud Stadium ending in a scoreless draw. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Last weekend’s game between the Riverhounds and Battery was a battle of possession in the middle third of the field. The defensive prowess of both sides was evident throughout the entire game as neither side could find the back of the net.

This Friday’s game should be an interesting and exciting clash between the Riverhounds and the 2010 USL-2 champions. The two clubs know each other well and have had a week to work on weaknesses seen in their last meeting.

Riverhounds Impact Players

Forwards—Jason Yeisley has been a handful for opposing defensive lines and is looking to notch his first goal in Riverhounds’ colors. Rookie Matt Fondy provided the Riverhounds with an assist last Friday against the Wilmington Hammerheads (2-0-0) and earned his first professional start against the Battery. 2010 USL-2 Rookie of the Year Jeremy Deighton has been an impact player as a second half substitute for the Hounds, nodding home a goal against Wilmington and looking to be a force in the air this season.

Midfielders—Shintaro Harada is a staple in the middle of the park for the Hounds and will be playing to honor his fellow countrymen during the club’s efforts to raise funds for victims of the tsunami and earthquakes in Japan earlier this year. Thabiso ‘Boyzzz’ Khumalo was dangerous last Saturday against the Battery on the left flank.

Defenders—Hunter Gilstrap is the man in goal for the Riverhounds and will look to record his third shutout of the season. Outside backs, Jason Kutney and Sterling Flunder add an attacking mindset with their overlapping runs.

Battery Impact Players

Forwards—Levi Coleman is the big target striker for the Battery and causes problems with his skillset and strength. Dane Kelly’s pace off the ball adds balance to the Battery’s attack.

Midfielders—Cole Peverley’s ability to serve the ball into dangerous situation is instrumental for the Battery on restarts. Nicki Patterson finds ways to jump inside of his marker on the flank and apply pressure on the opposition’s back line.

Defenders—John Wilson’s tireless engine and ability to read the game as a veteran central defender stifles the attack and allows for the Battery to counter attack. The ex-D.C. United star will provide leadership for a young Battery side

Tickets for Friday’s game can be purchased by calling the Riverhounds office at (412) 539-1191 or at the ticket gates on game day.

USL Endorses U.S. Soccer Curriculum

Claudio ReynaUSL News Release

Thursday, May 5, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. – United Soccer Leagues, the largest organization of elite-level soccer leagues in North America, is recommending to all of its Super Y-League clubs, technical directors, DOCs and coaches that they follow the new U.S. Soccer youth player development curriculum unveiled at the U.S. Soccer Player Development Summit last month in Oregon. U.S. Soccer Coaching Curriculum

USL National Technical Director Peter Mellor was invited by U.S. Soccer to participate in the summit, which was hosted by Nike in Beaverton, Oregon on April 19-21.

After spending much time traveling and studying youth player development in many soccer nations, U.S. Soccer Federation Technical Director Claudio Reyna has developed, written and released the comprehensive curriculum for youth player development. Reyna has been supported in the development of the curriculum by Dr. Javier Perez, who has worked at all levels of the game in Spain, England, Germany and France, as well as the U.S.

During the Summit Reyna continuously stressed the four main areas of the curriculum that coaches should concentrate on every day in their training and planning. He refers to these areas as the “four pillars.” They are (1) Development over winning; (2) Quality training sessions; (3) Age-appropriate training; (4) Have fun and inspire your players.

“USL would like to support the U.S. Soccer curriculum and strongly recommends that our USL club technical directors, DOCs and coaches implement as much of the curriculum as possible into their club development structure,” Mellor said. “I will always make the statement that ‘soccer is a game of opinions,’ however, this curriculum can offer a structure which can be complemented by a coach’s own coaching style and flavor!

“I also recommend that each club, when ready, share the curriculum with its parents so they can also see the structure and player development direction that our governing body, U.S. Soccer, has adopted and implemented. Sharing the curriculum with parents should help with parent education and understanding the player development process at all youth ages, from 6 to 18.”

W-League Atlantic Division Preview

USL Feature – www.uslsoccer.com

Thursday, May 5, 2011

The Virginia Beach Piranhas may have undergone a name change for 2011, but the goal of winning a W-League title remains the same. Since the Piranhas claimed the 2003 W-League Championship and back-to-back Atlantic Division titles in 2003 and 2004, they have been stuck in the middle of the table. However, in 2011 change is afoot and the Piranhas are looking for a return to the top.

In order to reach the summit once more, the Piranhas realized some things would have to change. First, former player-coach and W-League legend Wendy Waddell decided to move to the coaching role full-time.

“Wendy would still be an impact player on any W-League roster, but she decided that in order to better our team’s chance at reaching our fifth W-League Championship,” Piranhas President Marcie Laumann said.

The next decision the Piranhas had to make was how to best structure their roster. After tinkering with a roster of mainly younger talent, the Piranhas decided to make a change.

“Our coaching staff has been recruiting for nine months and our roster is mainly post-collegiate players who are older and more experienced,” Laumann added. “We have also put a great deal of time and energy into scouting internationals from across the world.”

The Piranhas are confident the roster they’ve constructed will thrust them back into the W-League playoff chase.

The Piranhas are always looking for new ways to raise the profile of their club of the field as well. The franchise is well known throughout the community for their charity work and their innovative approach to raising awareness for the club.

“We have spent a great deal of time in the off-season completely overhauling our marketing program,” Laumann said. “We now have our own director of social media, we retained a professional marketing firm, and have started our own radio show - Red Card Radio - which can be heard locally on 102.1 FM and world wide via the web from 9-10 a.m. every Saturday morning. Red Card Radio talk all things soccer, especially USL.”

Atlanta Silverbacks

The Atlanta Silverbacks enter the 2011 season as the defending Atlantic Division champions and winners of the past four division titles. The Silverbacks finished with a 7-2-1 record last season, holding off a challenge from the Charlotte Lady Eagles for the division title.

Atlanta charged all the way to the final four last season, but had to settle for third place. This season the Silverbacks are gunning for the finals once more after suffering a tough defeat to eventual champion Buffalo last season. Given the talent and pedigree of past Atlanta sides, another division title will be expected.

Charlotte Lady Eagles

The Charlotte Lady Eagles will have June 3 penciled into their calendars this season. June 3 is when the Lady Eagles will renew their rivalry the Silverbacks. After playing bridesmaid to the Silverbacks for the past several seasons and losing to Atlanta, 1-0, in a gut-wrenching Eastern Conference final in 2010, the Lady Eagles will be out for revenge.

Charlotte, backstopped by Goalkeeper of the Year Alyssa Whitehead, returns 20 former Lady Eagles this season. Charlotte hopes the small amount of turnover will play to its advantage. Last year Charlotte boasted the W-League’s best defense, only surrendering four goals in the regular season. If the Lady Eagles can raise their scoring productivity, this may be the year they finish on top.

Dayton Dutch Lions

The Dutch Lions entered the USL system last year with a PDL team, and 2011 marks the debut of their USL PRO and W-League sides. The Dutch Lions will be coached by Mark Batman and aim to make an immediate impact in the W-League.

Dayton has slowly begun to assemble a talented roster of collegiate talent and W-League alums. In true Dutch Lions form, the team has even brought over some talent from the Netherlands in Rianne Schorel. The Dutch Lions will face a tough test to begin the season, opening against Atlanta May 14.

Fredericksburg Impact

The Impact are among the debut W-League sides for the 2011 season and they are looking to forge success in the competitive Atlantic Division. Fredericksburg has already begun to assemble of squad of talented college players in preparation for the season.

Fredericksburg is guided by head coach Jen Woodie in its inaugural season and Woodie will have a tough task on her hands, but given the talent pool in the region the Impact have a chance to make an “Impact” this season.

Northern Virginia Majestics

The Majestics enter 2011 after a difficult 2010 season. Northern Virginia could only muster two wins and six goals last season, but it is looking to right the ship.
Coach Jac Cicala’s side is aiming to get its season off on the right foot when it visits expansion Fredericksburg on May 21.

W-League Western Conference Preview

USL Feature – www.uslsoccer.com

Friday, May 6, 2011

In 2010, the W-League Western Conference showed why it was one of the toughest in the league. Half of the conference’s teams finished equal on points, leaving the final playoff spot down to goal differential. The Colorado Rush, in their debut season, were one of those teams, but unfortunately their goal differential left them short of a playoff spot. The Rush took a lot away from the 2010 season and are using it as a building experience.

“Each team in our division posed different challenges,” Technical Director Erik Bushéy said. “We had plenty of moments where we showed we could play with anybody in the country as well as moments where we looked like a true rookie franchise.”

The Rush are looking to take those experiences last season and use them to help drive success this season. To achieve that success the Rush are building their roster from the inside out by using a core of talent the Rush have developed.

“Over 75 percent of the team are current or former Colorado Rush youth players,” Bushéy said. “In addition, the opportunity not only to win, but to develop our young talents is a part of our expectations.”

This season the Rush will rely on veterans such as Sara Wagenfuhr, Danielle Foxhoven, Krissy Tribbet, and 2010 W-League Rookie of the Year candidate Morgan Kennedy for experience. At the same time, the Rush as expecting big things from young talent such as 17-year-old Lindsey Horan and other young players.

“We are using predominantly Colorado Rush products,” added Bushéy. “The knowledge of our club, style and philosophy can prove to be a great strength. Age is less of a concern as far as I am concerned, but fortunately we do have a good group of senior athletes to provide balance.”

Vancouver Whitecaps

Since 2001 the Vancouver Whitecaps have appeared in the W-League final four times and captured two W-League crowns. 2010 marked another appearance in the W-League Championship game where Hubert Busby’s side suffered a tough defeat against Buffalo. However, Vancouver has restocked its roster with talent for 2011 and is looking to win title number three.

Vancouver will face a unique task in 2011 with the FIFA Women’s World Cup taking place June 26 to July 17 in Germany. Vancouver carries a roster filled with Canadian internationals, and Canada is one of the teams tipped to do well this summer in Germany. With some of their best players scheduled to leave, the Whitecaps must cope until their return. Regardless of this temporary loss, Vancouver will still be one of the favorites for a W-League title.

Seattle Sounders

After appearing in three consecutive W-League final fours from 2006 to 2008, the Sounders will be back in 2011. A trip to this year’s final four was assured when Seattle was selected as the host the 2011 W-League Championship Presented by Umbro. The team is hoping to gain enough momentum from a strong regular season to fight its way to the championship game.

The Sounders will have to up their scoring power this season, as last year they finished with only twelve goals scored. The result of the low scoring last year was six draws in 10 matches. If the Sounders can power up their offense this season, then they may be looking for gold in the emerald city.

Pali Blues

2010 sent the Pali Blues crashing back to earth. After making their W-League debut in 2008, the Blues went until the 2010 season without losing a match, collecting two W-League Championships along the way. The Blues lost their first playoff game last year too, falling to finalist Vancouver 2-1 in the Western Conference final.

The Blues have restocked their roster this season and enter 2011 ready to reclaim their W-League crown. Pali has bolstered its roster with a number of impressive additions and will help kick off the W-League season on May 14 when it plays host to the LA Strikers.

Colorado Force

Longtime W-League stalwarts, the Colorado Force are looking to return to the playoffs after a down 2010 season. The Force collected only two wins last season, but they are planning to turn things around in 2011.

Colorado brought back former Force player Tracy Chao to fill the head coaching job and she is looking to use her experience to guide the Force up the standings.

Santa Clarita Blue Heat

The Blue Heat were a rookie franchise in 2010, a season which featured a number of highlights for the debut club. First, the Blue Heat pulled a remarkable upset beating the Pali Blues, 1-0. Then Santa Clarita hosted the 2011 W-League Championship.

The focus in year two will be upping the level of play on the field. The Blue Heat scored only six goals in 2010, but they have a lot of new faces on their roster for 2011 and will look to raise their game.

Los Angeles Strikers

Los Angeles is certainly looking to make its mark on the talented Western Conference in its debut season. The Strikers have stocked their roster with former W-League alums and international talent with a goal of putting an entertaining product on the field that wins matches now.

The Striker’s hope to emulate what the Pali Blues - another Los Angeles-area club - did in their debut season a couple of years ago - win a championship. The Strikers will face the Blues right away, as they travel to Pali in the W-League’s opening weekend.

USL Feature

Friday, May 6, 2011

By NICHOLAS MURRAY

When the Fredericksburg Hotspur went to find a coach for their inaugural USL Premier Development League season, they didn’t have to look far.

Already the Technical Director of the club’s parent organization, the Fredericksburg Area Soccer Association, Carl Gray brought a wealth of experience to the position as he began to build a squad for the 2011 season. With a mix of players with PDL experience and a younger group of players who had played for Gray in the club’s U20 side last year, the coach is now looking forward to opening the season on Saturday against the Virginia Beach Piranhas at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex at 7 p.m.

“Obviously, I can’t wait,” Gray said by phone. “I’m very excited; I’m very familiar with the Virginia Beach franchise … and [new coach Cesar Rizzo] and I have worked in the ODP program together so we know each other. I’m very excited about the opportunity.”

Gray’s coaching background stretches much further than his involvement with FASA. A club coach who has been part of the state’s Olympic Development Program for many years, Gray was able to call on the relationships he’d developed with some of the state’s top players to bring them to Fredericksburg for this summer.

“I have been a coach in central Virginia now for close to 30-some years,” Gray said, “and probably more than half of the squad we have so far has played for me at one time or another through the Olympic Development Program, club teams, somewhere along the line. I knew a lot of these players and they knew my coaching style, and that gives me the foundation to build the rest of the team on.”

While Fredericksburg is new to the PDL, the Piranhas are now entering their fifth season in the league. There has been some change in their organization for this season, with a new coach in Rizzo who has faced similar challenges to those faced by Gray in assembling a squad for the upcoming season.

“I think the challenge right now is to put the team together as many players are coming from different ways [of playing],” Rizzo said by phone. “The biggest challenge is to have the team playing the style I would like to see, but we haven’t had enough time for that yet.”

Rizzo was an assistant coach for the Piranhas W-League side last season, and comes in trying to help the side return to the playoff form of its inaugural season. Originally from Brazil, Rizzo wants to see his side play attractive, fast-paced soccer. He has also set the team goals for this season, one of which is returning to the playoffs.

“As a team, we will try to have a very good season,” Rizzo said. “Our biggest goal is to reach the playoffs, and after that we could set a second goal to reach the finals, but it’s one step at a time.”

Given the nature of the South Atlantic Division, which also contains strong programs such as the Carolina Dynamo, which reached the PDL playoffs a season ago, and former professional side Real Maryland FC, Fredericksburg and Virginia Beach will find strong challenges from the other sides in their division. But with the proximity most of the clubs share, Gray said he and his players are looking forward to developing rivalries with the Piranhas, Northern Virginia Royals, Real Maryland and the Dynamo.

“I’ve already observed the boys at our practices have been talking about some of their friends or some of the players they’ve played against collegiately that are playing for some of the other teams, so they know they’re going to be getting a very good level of competition which is exactly what they want in a situation like this,” Gray said. “We’re far enough away from one another that we’re not competing for the same players, but at the same time we’re close enough to where we are aware of each other’s strengths and weaknesses.”

Gray also hopes that the club as a whole, which now has teams from its U6 Academy sides to the PDL and W-League squads, can offer players in central Virginia a pathway through the club and hopefully into the professional ranks.

“I’ve been with FASA for a number of years and it is a superb organization that has a great vision as to where they want to be,” Gray said. “The ability to now offer the PDL and W-League franchise as well as taking our program all the way down to the U6 Academy, that provides us the ability to provide players in central Virginia the opportunity to travel through the whole program with us.”

Richmond Kickers News Release -- www.richmondkickers.com

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Kickers return home this Saturday to host the Wilmington Hammerheads at 7 p.m.  The red-hot Kickers (5-0-0) meet the undefeated Hammerheads (2-0-0) in an intiguing American Division clash at City Stadium. The first 1,000 fans through the gate will receive a soccer ball soft Frisbee from nTelos Wireless and free samples from Flowers Baking Company. Avoid lines at the gate and click and print your tickets in advance at RichmondKickers.com.

“This will be the toughest game of the season so far,” said Leigh Cowlishaw, Richmond Kickers Head Coach and Director of Soccer. “Wilmington are full of confidence after an excellent start to their season and will no doubt be looking to collect all three points. We have several injury concerns so it will be a true test of our squad’s depth.”

With a rivalry dating back to the 2006 season, the Kickers face the Hammerheads for the first time since 2009 as Wilmington recently rejoined USL PRO after a one-year hiatus from professional soccer. Despite holding a 7-3-3 advantage over the Hammerheads, the Kickers have a score to settle after Wilmington narrowly claimed the 2009 regular season title over Richmond. Both teams concluded the 2009 regular season with 39 points, but Wilmington took the tiebreaker based on total wins in league games that season.

The American Division rivals split the three-game regular season series in 2009, 1-1-1. The Kickers dropped a 3-2 decision in Wilmington in July before avenging the loss with a 1-0 victory in Hammerheads territory one month later. The two teams ended the regular season campaign with a fitting 2-2 draw to bring the series level. Kickers forward Matthew Delicâte tallied three of the Kickers five goals against their southern foes that season.

Wilmington picked up right where they left off, opening the 2011 USL PRO season with a 2-0 record. Most recently, a pair of late goals from Paul Nicholson and Alex Grendi lifted the Hammerheads to a decisive 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. Two weeks earlier, the revamped Wilmington team edged the USL PRO powerhouse Rochester 1-0. Notching four goals with four different goalscorers, the Hammerheads look to continue their winning ways in their first road test of the season.

Meanwhile, the Kickers improved their record to 5-0-0 after an impressive 6-0 victory in Dayton last weekend. Scoring early and often, the Kickers left their mark at Miami Valley South Stadium when USL PRO Team of the Week honorees, Delicâte and David Bulow each registered multiple-point games. Delicâte opened the flood gates in the fifth minute, adding two assists on the night, with Bulow notching a pair of second half goals off the bench. Midfielders Edson Elcock and Ryan Heins each contributed their first goals of the season and newcomer Shaka Bangura rounded out the scoreline with his second in as many games.

Players to Watch

Kickers: Midfielder David Bulow has returned strongly to Richmond this season, notching three goals in the last two matches as a second-half substitute. The 2009 USL-2 Championship MVP recently recorded a pair of tallies over Dayton last weekend on the road, earning USL PRO honors for the first time this season. Newcomer Shaka Bangura shocked the Charleston Battery and thrilled Richmond fans with a 90th minute game-winning goal two weeks ago. Entering the match seconds earlier, he scored on his first touch of the season, in his first minute of play. He added a second tally over Dayton last weekend and is now tied for third place in scoring for the Kickers. Defender Yomby William continues to anchor the strongest defensive unit in the league, having allowed just two goals in the last five matches. Contributing to the team’s third shutout of the season last weekend in Dayton, he earned a USL PRO Team of the Week Honorable Mention for his staunch defensive efforts.

Hammerheads: Rookie midfielder Paul Nicholson earned USL PRO Team of the Week honors this week after notching the game-winning goal over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. Joining the Hammerheads roster in 2011 after a two-year stint in the Premier Development League, Nicholson is tied for second on the team in points. Recently transferred from the Los Angeles Blues, Gareth Evans shores up the Hammerheads defense, which has allowed just one goal this season. The Welsh defender spent two seasons with the Austin Aztex and Real Maryland Monarchs after a stint in the Welsh Premier League. Having scored the game-winning goal against the Kickers in July 2009 while on loan with the Hammerheads, forward Andriy Budnyy joined the Wilmington lineup full-time this season. The former Carolina RailHawks player added his first goal of the 2011 campaign in last week’s 3-1 win over Pittsburgh.

Mother’s Day Celebration

The Kickers will be honoring the Mother’s Day weekend by presenting special gifts and prizes to moms in attendance. The first 500 moms through the gate will receive a flower from Vogue Flowers and a Mary Kay gift bag. Plus, drawings will be held for a $500 gift certificate to Peter Alexander Jewelers and other great gifts and prizes.

Recstravaganza

All youth rec soccer players are invited to RECSTRAVAGANZA, celebrating the 2011 rec soccer season, with the Richmond Kickers pro team this Saturday, May 7. Enjoy delicious concessions from Papa John's, inflatable games, halftime contests, giveaways from nTelos Wireless and Flowers Baking Company and more! Antigua Barracuda FC News Release -- www.antiguabarracudafc.com

Friday, May 6, 2011

ST. JOHN'S, Antigua -- After a successful road trip that saw Antigua Barracuda FC win all three matches, score nine goals, concede none and move to the top of the USL PRO International Division, the club now hopes to replicate that performance in front of their home fans at the Sticky Wicket Stadium in a doubleheader against River Plate Puerto Rico which begins on Friday night at 8 p.m.

The team has been basking in the accolades that greeted them upon their return to Antigua but are eager to change their fortunes at home, where they currently have only one win from three matches, to match their successes abroad. They begin that with tough, seasoned opposition from Puerto Rico.

“We played them last week and they’re a good team who like to pass the ball and retain possession," Barracuda coach Tom Curtis said on local television this week, "but our philosophy is to take care of our business first, making sure we are doing the things that make us a better unit and hopefully imposing them on the opposition.

“The team continues to grow every day, their confidence is good, their willingness to work harder for each other is tremendous and I am really pleased with the spirit amongst the boys. Moreover, we really want to win for the fans and supporters of the club.”

Meanwhile football fans across Antigua have thrown their support behind the team and are expected to turn out in their numbers for the games this weekend.

Speaking on “Talking Football – The Barracuda Hour”, Chair of the Barracuda Supporters Trust, Emile Joseph said, “We were always confident the team would gel well and cause more than a few problems for teams in this League, we note that our style of play is getting noticed as well, but we will give our full support to this team who very few thought would be creating the impact it already has.

“Coach Curtis has been doing a good job and you can see the players are buying into his method of doing things so we are very happy right now, there is still a long way to go but we hope they can continue their good showing.”

“It’s good to be home," USL PRO Player of the Week Peter "Big Pete" Byers said. "To play our game in front of our fans and family and friends. This weekend is special for Mothers and everybody if fit and ready to go, we hope to deliver another good show for them to make the party really special.”

River Plate PR arrived on island last night, the grounds are in excellent condition and the stage is set for another wonderful night at the home of Antigua Barracuda Football Club.

F.C. New York News Release -- www.fcnewyorksoccer.com

Friday, May 6, 2011

QUEENS, N.Y. – F.C. New York looks forward to hosting its second USL PRO home game of the season this Saturday as the Harrisburg City Islanders come to Belson Stadium on the campus of St. John’s University for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

Saturday’s game will be the first meeting between the two teams and marks F.C. New York’s fourth game of the USL PRO season. After a slow start to both club’s seasons, each team will be aiming for its first victory.

F.C. New York (0-2-1) fell 2-1 to Orlando City in its home opener last weekend, the second defeat at the hands of the Lions the club has suffered this season. After trailing at halftime, Owen Morrison equalized for New York early in the second half, only for Orlando’s Lewis Neal to grab his side victory with a late free kick.

Due to bad luck with the weather early in the season, Harrisburg has only played once in USL PRO so far, twice seeing its home opener postponed due to heavy rains. The City Islanders fell in their only outing of the season so far, losing 1-0 to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds two weeks ago.

While the City Islanders have an experienced side, the game offers F.C. New York a good opportunity to face a team that might not be at its sharpest due to the lack of games it has played so far this season.

“The team has been improving each week and deserved something in our home opener against Orlando,” New York coach Matt Weston said. “We have worked hard again since the weekend and are relishing the opportunity to put on a good show against Harrisburg in front of our home fans.

“[Harrisburg coach] Bill [Beecher] will have his team well prepared and I expect a real battle but we are looking forward to the contest and hoping to take the three points.”

For tickets to Saturday’s game, fans can call (866) 827-0154, or visit www.fcnewyorksoccer.com.

Dayton Dutch Lions News Release -- www.dutchlionsfc.com

Friday, May 6, 2011

DAYTON, Ohio -- The Dayton Dutch Lions FC return to USL PRO action to take on Orlando City at Miami Valley South Stadium, on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. for "Emergency Responders Night", a night dedicated to recognizing the men and women that serve the Dayton community with proceeds benefiting Hunter Syndrome. The match will be available live at USLlive.com.

"The guys have been practicing very well this week," said Head Coach Ivar van Dinteren. I think the win against The Ohio State University on Tuesday helped us prepare for this weekend’s match. Orlando is a quality team, but it is our time to put on a good showing."

Recovering from last week’s matchup against undefeated Richmond, finishing in a 6-0 defeat, the Dutch Lions are looking to get on the board in their fourth consecutive USL PRO home match. Gaining confidence this past week in their victory against The Ohio State University men’s team 3-1 in a charity match for the Connor Senn Memorial Fund, the Dutch Lions are hopeful the momentum from the victory will carry on to Saturday. The battle of the Lions will mark the club’s first mascot rivalry match.

Orlando, entering the match 3-1-1, defeated F.C. New York last week to extend their road winning streak after previous victory against Charlotte on April 16th. Posting impressive results early in the season, Orlando forward Maxwell Griffin will be a player on the Dutch Lions' radar. The 2010 USSF Division 2-Pro League Rookie of the Year, Griffin has found the back of the net four times this season.

For more information visit the Dutch Lions official website at www.dutchlionsfc.com and follow Dutch Lions action on Twitter @Daytondutchlion.

The Dutch Lions will return to action May 20th at Miami Valley South Stadium for "Kicks for Kids Night" sponsored by Evenflo and Dayton Children’s for a matchup against Los Angeles.

Reading United AC News Release -- www.readingunitedac.com

Friday, May 6, 2011

READING, Pa. – Reading United AC is proud to announce a series of “friendlies” against their professional partners, the Harrisburg City Islanders and Philadelphia Union! The City Islanders, who play a step above Reading United in the U.S. Soccer Pyramid at the USL PRO level, will come to Reading on May 24th, while the second-year Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer will visit just a week later on May 31st. Both games will be held at Exeter High School’s Don Thomas Stadium and kick off at 7:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. respectively.

This will be the second meeting between Reading and Philadelphia, as the Union earned a 2-0 victory over the United on June 23rd, 2010. An own goal by Reading’s Eric Schoenle off a deflection in the 34th minute and a Nick Zimmerman strike in the 59th minute were the only tallies in a tightly contested match. The match-up between Reading and Harrisburg will be the first since the City Islanders disposed of the former Reading Rage by a 4-1 tally in the first round of the 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Harrisburg struck first a mere 43 seconds in the game, and never looked back in a physical, fast, and slippery competition on June 9, 2009.

In late 2009, Reading and Philadelphia inked a player development agreement that makes Reading the exclusive PDL Player Development Partner of the Philadelphia Union. The City Islanders signed a similar arrangement with Philadelphia, adding a professional team to the “Path to PPL Park”.

“The Philadelphia Union have provided a clearly defined path for the progression of soccer players in our region," said Reading United President Art Auchenbach. "Starting with YSC youth training, USSF Academy teams for top level U14-U18 youth talent, the Reading United Super 20’s and PDL squads, the professional level in Harrisburg (USL PRO), and finally to the MLS with Philadelphia, the Union have set the bar in the United States for a truly groundbreaking soccer hierarchy for our fans and players. These exhibition games will provide the fans, and our players, a small taste of what top level professional soccer is about!”

Reading United enjoyed immediate success from the partnership, having three players from last year’s team drafted into MLS (C.J. Sapong, Corey Hertzog, Levi Houapeu) and another signed as a homegrown player by the Houston Dynamo (Alex Dixon). Another two players from the 2010 roster have continued their playing careers in the professional ranks, both in the States (Luke Mulholland with the USL PRO’s Wilmington Hammerheads) and abroad (Jeremy Vuolo with AC Oulu in Finland).

"The Philadelphia Union are deeply committed to our player development partnership with Reading United and Harrisburg City Islanders." Union CEO and Operating Partner Nick Sakiewicz said. "These games give us an opportunity to get together in each respective market, bring some exciting soccer to town and see how the stars of the future match up against Major League Soccer professionals. We are honored to have such great partners."

The Union has also benefitted, using the relationship to gather an inside scouting report on their 2011 3rd round draft choice, and Reading United alumni, forward Levi Houapeu. The guidance of United Head Coach Brendan Burke at the PDL level impressed the Union, and named him as the inaugural Head Coach of the Union Reserves team. The City Islanders also contributed to the Union cause, as defender Sheanon Williams played the entire 2010 season in Harrisburg, before signing a professional contract with Philadelphia in late August.

“Sheanon is a great example of the value of this partnership," Harrisburg Head Coach Bill Becher said. "He did very well here in Harrisburg, and has moved on to play with the Philadelphia Union. The partnerships we have with Reading and Philadelphia are very important to the Islanders, and we have seen the benefits for all three organizations. We look forward to these relationships growing even stronger in the future.”

Tickets for the games will be available online at www.readingunitedac.com/store/tickets.html or gamedays at Don Thomas Stadium. Ticket costs are $10 each and are ALL general admission tickets. Fans can purchase a two game pack (tickets for both games) for $15. Reading United kickoff their 2011 PDL campaign with a May 7 visit to the Brooklyn Knights and return for their home opener on Sunday May 15 for the “Kickoff to Summer” against the NJ Rangers.

D.C. United Women News Release -- www.dcunitedwomen.com

Friday, May 6, 2011

GERMANTOWN, Md. -- Penn State University standout Christine Nairn, who narrowly missed out on a final roster spot for the U.S. Women’s National Team for this summer’s World Cup in Germany, highlights several players named to D.C. United Women, the club announced today.

Nairn played her entire youth club soccer career with Freestate Soccer Club, and is a veteran of the U.S. youth soccer national team programs.

"Christine is exactly the type of player we’re looking for," said D.C. United Women coach Mike Jorden." She has all of the characteristics we like: technical skill, speed of thought and an ability to see the entire field all of the time. She moves the ball well, can beat players on the dribble, and she can be a dangerous shooter from outside the penalty area."

"I am extremely excited to play for and represent D.C. United Women," Nairn said. "Growing up in Bowie, my family and I have gone to RFK to watch plenty of D.C. United games, so I am thrilled to be a part of such a talented and historic program. I hope I can benefit the program as well as help it grow this summer for its first inaugural season."

Among Nairn’s impressive achievements:
• Member of the U.S. Women’s National Player Pool since 2009
• Member of the U.S. Women’s U23 National Player pool since 2010
• Former co-captain of the U.S. Women’s U20 national team
• U20 World Cup champion in 2010
• Member of the CONCACAF U20 champions in 2010
• Selected to the NSCAA All-America team in 2010
• Nominated as U.S. Soccer’s Female Youth Athlete of the Year in 2009

"Christine brings a wealth of experience to our team, which is very impressive because she’s still a young player," Jorden said. "We look forward to having her influence the rest of the team with her poise and skill."

D.C. United Women is scheduled to hold its second and third round of tryouts on May 7 and May 14 at the Maryland SoccerPlex (field 18), from 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Joining Nairn in the first ever signings for the new club are the impressive and experience trio of Jerica DeWolfe, Danielle Malagari, and Tiffany Brown.

Brown joins D.C. United Women as one of Colorado College’s most dynamic players in school history, earning top-five school marks for goals and points and top 10 for assists. She played in every game over her four year career, and started 74 of 80 career games for the Tigers. She led the team in scoring three of her four years, and holds the school record for most games played during a collegiate career. Brown was a WPS trialist this spring for Western New York Flash, but turned down a training squad offer to reunite with Jorden, her former youth coach.

A Bethesda native, DeWolfe joins United from the University of Dayton, where she completed her senior season with six goals and six assists for 18 points as a midfielder for the Flyers, placing her second on the team overall. DeWolfe tallied three game-winning goals, and was named Midfielder of the Year, the first Flyer ever to win this award. She also earned First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors and was selected to the Atlantic 10 All-Championship team.

Prior to joining Dayton, DeWolfe netted 63 goals and 60 assists as a four-year starter and two-year captain at St. John’s College High School in Maryland. She was a Washington Post First Team All-Met player in 2005 and 2006. She also led her Freestate SC club team to the Maryland State Cup championships in 2005 and 2006.

A graduate of Good Counsel High School in Wheaton, Md. Malagari was a standout defender for the University of Maryland, where she started 36 of the Terrapins’ 39 games during her last two seasons. A tough left-footed defender, Malagari was a cornerstone of a Terp defense that posted 13 shutouts in 2004 and 2005.

A four-year standout at Good Counsel, she was a NSCAA All-South selection in 2001 and tallied 71 goals and 47 assists and was the school’s leading scorer her final three years.

"We are very pleased with our latest signings," said D.C. United Women General Manager Tim Schweitzer. "We are gathering together tremendous talent with strong local ties to the area. This is consistent with our goal of drawing players from the area, including top college standouts, former professionals and international stars. Our expectations are high for the product we will put on the field this summer."

D.C. United Women fill the vacancy left by the departure of the Washington Freedom Futures and will play their home slate of matches at the Maryland Soccerplex in Germantown, Maryland. Also the former home of the WPS Washington Freedom, the Soccerplex is an ideal showcase for women’s minor league soccer in the DC metropolitan area.

D.C. United Women face a challenging schedule of opponents in the Northeast Division in the upcoming season, including notable W-League mainstays New York Magic and Long Island Rough Riders. United Women open the season on the road against 2005 W-league Champion New Jersey Wildcats on May 25th. The club will kick off their home season on Thursday, June 9th hosting a rematch with the Wildcats.
