Charlotte Independence News Release - www.charlotteindependence.com

Friday, January 23, 2015

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Independence today announced the signing of the fifth player in the USL PRO expansion team’s history, as Andrew Ribeiro has agreed to terms. Upon signing with the Independence, Ribeiro immediately reported to the Colorado Rapids’ training camp. The Independence and Rapids signed a two-year USL PRO/MLS affiliation agreement in September 2014.

“We have been tracking Andrew for some time,” said Rapids Senior Director of Soccer Development Brian Crookham, who also is serving as Independence Technical Director. “He is a player that reads the game very well and takes up good starting spots on both sides of the ball. He is comfortable on the ball, has a good range of passing and can play in multiple spots. We feel he has MLS upside and look forward to him joining our system.”

Ribeiro is a physical center back/holding midfielder who checks in at six-feet, 180 pounds. He originally was selected by the New York Red Bulls in the fourth round (70th overall) of the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft. After being released by the Red Bulls during the preseason, Ribeiro was signed by USL PRO club the Harrisburg City Islanders. He was a regular starter for the Islanders, appearing in 24 matches and helping lead the club to a playoff appearance.

Following a successful first year in the USL PRO, Ribeiro was signed by MLS club Chivas USA in the fall of 2014. While he appeared in 14 games for Chivas USA’s U-23 team, Ribeiro was released a month into the season without making a first team appearance. He signed with USL PRO club the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on July 29, 2014, where he recorded 462 minutes, one shot and four fouls.

“Andrew is a very competitive player, which we like,” said Independence GM Tom Engstrom. “He has had a brief stint in MLS and is very capable of getting back and staying there. He is immediately getting into the Rapids’ training camp and we expect him to do well there.”

A native of Green Bay, Wisc., Ribeiro played four years of collegiate soccer at Creighton University (2009-12) and helped lead the Bluejays to two consecutive NCAA College Cup appearances. He earned NSCAA All-American First Team honors as a senior in 2012 and was named the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He also claimed an All-MVC First Team selection and earned MVC All-Tournament Team honors after scoring the game-winning goal against Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in the MVC Tournament Championship.

The Independence roster now includes Ribeiro, Paolo DelPiccolo, Patrick Slogic, Jorge Herrera and Ben Newnam, with more player announcements expected in the next week. The team will begin training camp in mid-February and kick off its inaugural USL PRO season in late March.

Pumas Announce Pair Of Returnees

Kitsap Pumas News Release - www.kitsapsoccerclub.com

Friday, January 23, 2015

BREMERTON, Wash. - The Kitsap Pumas continue to add to their roster this week by re-signing defensive midfielder Trevor Jensen and goalkeeper Matt Grosey.

Jensen, who became a staple of the Pumas midfield this past season, and Grosey, who played a pivotal role for the Pumas by starting sixteen games and earning top ten rankings in the PDL regular season in minutes played, goals against, goals against average and wins, will join fellow midfielder Justin Ortinau, who was re-signed earlier this week, as the first three signings for the club in 2015.

A native of Chula Vista, California, Jensen grew up playing for the highly respected San Diego Nomads Soccer Club, a club that has produced other professional players such as Steve Cherundolo, Frankie Hejduk, Eric Avila, Joe Corona and even former Kitsap Puma Jesus “Chuy” Sanchez, among numerous others.

While at Willamette University, Jensen performed very well on the soccer field, scoring 17 career goals, getting a school record 18 career assists and earning both all-conference first team honors and an all west-region third team selection in 2013.

However, following his final season of collegiate soccer, Jensen found himself yearning for another opportunity to keep playing at a higher level and he decided to make the trip to Bremerton, Wash. for the Pumas’ tryouts.

“I always knew that I wanted to keep playing after college because I always felt like I had an unfortunate situation that robbed me of a soccer experience I felt I deserved,” said Jensen. “When my college coach told me about the Puma’s tryouts I jumped at the opportunity.”

After making the long trip to Bremerton two weekends in a row for both invitational tryouts, Jensen was offered a spot on the 2014 Puma’s roster. Although he was only one of a few non-Division 1 collegiate players to make the Puma roster, Jensen was able to earn a consistent spot in the Puma’s lineup.

“Trev is a fantastic player who shows provides a steadying influence in the middle of the field” said head coach Cameron McDonald “The fact he was so heavily involved last year may have surprised a few however we knew from the start what he was capable of and I fully expect him to play an equally pivotal role in our National Championship pursuit this season”

Grosey, meanwhile, is no stranger to top competition or high-praise for his talents in the net. After growing up in San Mateo, California, Grosey attended West Valley College (WVC) in Saratoga, California. WVC is one of the premier junior college soccer programs in the country with a long tradition of success. According to their homepage, they boast an impressive record of 94-30-29 over the past seven seasons including being ranked number four in the nation in 2010.

During his two years at WVC, Grosey earned Coast Conference Goalkeeper of the year both seasons and first-team all-western conference honors his freshman year.

After his two years of community college concluded Grosey received a scholarship to play for the newly formed Division 1 soccer program at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), where he would pursue a degree in engineering as well.

“I always knew that I wanted to keep playing at the top collegiate level so when I chose to come out to Nebraska it was primarily for that. I knew that it was a new program and I really wanted to do my part to help build up this program to be one of the elite programs in the area” recalled Grosey.

Although it was quite the adjustment for Grosey who grew up primarily in California to move halfway across the country to live in Nebraska, he was able to adjust and be very successful for them in goal.

“It was difficult at the start moving out here to Nebraska away from family but after I got in the swing of things and got acclimated to the weather I really enjoyed the entire experience” said Grosey. “It was awesome to be a part of creating something bigger than myself and making a lasting contribution to the development of their program.”

Somewhat of a staple for Grosey, once again his outstanding play earned him all-conference honors by being named second-team all-conference in the Summit League both seasons at UNO.

Just as he did when deciding to transfer from junior college, Grosey once again found himself striving for another opportunity to progress to a higher level of competition and continue to chase his dream of being a professional player.

"I spent a few years living in Olympia, Washington as well as California growing up so I already knew about the Pumas organization and how successful they have been in the past. When my college coach brought the Pumas up to me as an option to keep playing I never had any doubts about pursuing that opportunity.”

Although many highly touted goalkeepers from around the country flew out for the tryouts and the pumas ultimately picked up three very talented keepers to fill their roster, Grosey earned the starting position by consistently making extraordinary saves in training and in the games.

MacDonald was delighted to retain Grosey for this season; "Matt is an extremely talented goalkeeper who I believe will eventually make the step up to the next level. We are fortunate to have a player with his ability and attitude."

“I was really excited for the new opportunity. My entire life I’ve always wanted to be a pro player and it felt like my dreams were coming true” Grosey said. “I was overwhelmed with joy to get to that next level by signing with the Pumas and I just tried to do my part every minute of the experience to give us the best chance to win.”

However, as the season progressed and ultimately ended with a loss for the Pumas in the National Final, Grosey found himself feeling even more and more thankful for the opportunity he had been given with the Pumas.

“Although it didn’t end perfectly, this past season was very fulfilling for me” said Grosey. “Everything from the success we experienced on the field, to playing on one of the most talented and hard-working teams I have ever been on, to finally getting to focus solely on soccer and not have to worry about balancing school, was amazing. Being around that pro environment, along with the high level of training and talent that goes along with it was incredible and I feel it really helped me to develop as a player.”

Even though losing in the national final left Grosey with somewhat of a bitter taste in his mouth regarding his initial experience at the professional level, it has served as fuel for him this off-season to work even harder.

“I cannot wait to get back to Bremerton” Grosey said excitedly. “I hope to build on the momentum we made last season. Coming back you always want to build on the previous season and now the only way for us to accomplish that is to win a national title. That goal will be in the back of my mind all year and I hope our hard work will bring another national title back to Kitsap for our club, staff and especially our amazing fan base.”

Western Mass Pioneers News Release - www.wmpioneers.com

Monday, January 26, 2015

LUDLOW, Mass. - The Western Mass Pioneers will be heading into their 18th season as participants in USL with new head coach Dennis Gomes leading the way. Gomes has been an integral part of the soccer scene in Ludlow for many years and has contributed to the success of the Western Mass Pioneers, Western United Pioneers, and various Gremio Lusitano Club teams.

“Dennis has been a part of this community for a long time now and his dedication to the development of programs and players goes without question,” stated Pioneers General Manager Greg Kolodziey.

Gomes’ vast playing and coaching experience started with his playing days as a youth in Ludlow with the Lusitano Football Club (LFC). The LFC eventually became the Junior Pioneers and is known today as the Western United Pioneers. The Western United Pioneers are one of the largest premier youth clubs in the state. Later in his youth development, Gomes contributed to many championship Lusitano Club teams including the Jr. LASA, Connecticut League and Pioneer Valley Summer League squads.

Gomes attended the University of Vermont and played as a member of the varsity men’s soccer team. In the offseason, he would head back to Ludlow to play for the club. At the conclusion of his college career, Gomes had the opportunity to play professionally for the Western Mass Pioneers, which he did for three seasons.

As his playing days were starting to come to a close, his ability to read and analyze the game transformed into more of a mentoring and coaching role. Gomes took the lead and had a very successful campaign with the Junior Pioneers U-20 team that competed in the USL’s Super-20 League; developing players who eventually went on to have successful college careers. Gomes continued to develop as a coach, and joined the Pioneers staff in 2011 as an assistant coach under Federico Molinari. Their relationship even continued when Molinari took on the head coaching responsibilities for the Western Mass Pro Soccer Club, and Gomes continued as his assistant coach there. In his spare time, Gomes is also coach of his daughters U-9 developmental team for the Western United Pioneers.

“I am happy to be the new Head Coach of the Western Mass Pioneers. My goal is to win but also to work with the Western Mass communities at the youth level to develop local talent and bring them to the Pioneers in the future,” said Gomes.

Gomes can be reached via email at dgomes@wmpioneers.com.

Additional tryouts will be held in March at a location to be named. Continue to refer to the Pioneers' website or follow us on Facebook and Twitter for updates.

Thunder Bay Chill News Release - www.thunderbaychill.com

Monday, January 26, 2015

THUNDER BAY, Ontario - The Thunder Bay Chill announced today that the club has hired Giovanni Petraglia as the Head Coach of its PDL team. Petraglia was hired after long-time coach Tony Colistro announced his resignation as bench boss.

“We are very happy to sign Giovanni and feel very confident that he is a great fit in leading our PDL team through our next phase of success,” said Chill GM John Marrello.

Giovanni lacks no experience in the PDL after serving as Colistro’s assistant for the past three years. Petraglia is a native of Potenza, Italy and brings with him an UEFA license and a wealth of experience in Europe. Over the past few years Petraglia has assisted the PDL team as well has been involved with the Chill youth academy in particular the PDL Reserve team.

“I am thankful for the opportunity and I look forward to the challenge. Being the second coach to ever coach the Chill will be a huge responsibility,” said Petraglia. The club's new head coach had previously worked with Colistro as his assistant. Petraglia feels that his philosophies and player standards are similar in what they look for in players.

Under Petraglia’s direction the Chill saw players such Ayden Meilleur who made the transition from the Reserves to the PDL. In 2015, four players who played for Petraglia will also be looking to make the 2015 squad.

“Gio came into the club and immediately bought into the philosophy, culture, and strategic plan. The decision for me to step down was well in the works which is one of the reason we brought Gio in a few years ago. He brings knowledge and the personality needed to deal with the types of PDL players that we bring into the first team,” said Colistro.

Petraglia will work alongside Colistro immediately as they begin the recruiting process for the 2015 season. The Chill will look to get back to the playoffs after missing out last season. Prior to that the Chill had a run of seven successful straight years of making the playoffs and playing in three PDL Championship Games, winning the title in 2008. Petraglia can be reached by email at: giovannipetragliatbc@gmail.com or 807-630-0884.

Burlingame Dragons FC News Release -- www.BurlingameDragons.com

Tuesday, January 27, 2015

BURLINGAME, Calif. - Burlingame Dragons FC, in affiliation with the 2-time Major League Soccer champion San Jose Earthquakes, are proud to announce Dana Taylor as the first head coach in franchise history. Taylor helmed last season’s San Jose Earthquakes U-23 team in the Premier Development League — leading them to just one point from a playoff spot. In stepping into a familiar role with Burlingame FC, Taylor looks to guide the Dragons into the post season.

“We cannot be more excited,” Burlingame FC co-owner Nick Swinmurn said. “When you start building a new sports franchise, one of the main goals is to surround yourself with people of experience and expertise. And when it comes to Dragons FC and the PDL, Dana is without a doubt the right man for the job. It’s an exciting day for the franchise and we look forward to the team Dana is expertly piecing together.”

Taylor comes to Burlingame FC from Cal State Stanislaus where he was responsible for starting a new era with the Warriors. In just six short years at Cal  State Stanislaus, Taylor elevated the program to elite status. The Warriors posted four consecutive winning seasons, have been to the CCAA Finals three of those six years, were crowned CCAA Champions in 2012 and received an invitation to the NCAA College Cup where they made it into the second round.

Taylor, who is 57-39-18 in his six seasons, is the only winning coach in the history of the program and has a .600 winning percentage. As the Warriors head coach his teams have re-written the record books 37 times and along the way Taylor coached the program’s only two All-Americans. In addition, Cal State Stanislaus has been one of the nations leaders in home game attendance. The men’s team averages 888 fans, having drawn 8,879 spectators. Both numbers rank No. 1 in NCAA Division II. After six years, Stanislaus remains in the top 5 nationally, year in and year out.

Prior to Cal State Stanislaus, Taylor spent 10 years as the head coach at Oregon State University. Taylor took OSU from 178th in the country (out of 202 teams) to a No. 9 and No. 7 ranking — both those times resulting in NCAA post-season appearances. He mentored and developed 17 players currently playing professionally in MLS and abroad. In 2010, Danny Mwanga was selected No. 1 in the MLS draft. Other notable names Alan Gordon, Ryan Johnson, Robbie Findley, Bryan Jordon, Brian Farber all currently playing in the MLS and each with varying national teams.

Taylor earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation with a minor in Personnel Management from the United College of Barrington-Gordon, and then relocated to Rhode Island, in 1985. While at the school, he was a fouryear starter and a two-time National Christian College Athletic Association All-New England selection.

Taylor holds a United States Soccer Federation “A” coaching license and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America “Premier Diploma.” He has been a national staff instructor, coaching USSF national courses as well as being part of the national goalkeeping staff.

Burlingame Dragons FC is a Premier Development League team — 2015 marks the inaugural season for the franchise. Dragons FC is comprised mostly of U-23 soccer players from multiple NCAA divisions. Burlingame Dragons FC is the proud PDL affiliate of the 2-time Major League Champion San Jose Earthquakes. As the official affiliate, the San Jose Earthquakes oversee Dragons FC personnel — from coaches, trainers and players. It is the goal of Burlingame FC to be a direct link between player and the MLS level of professional soccer.

As part of the PDL alignment, Burlingame Dragons FC plays in the Western Conference’s Southwest Division — a 5-team division comprised of teams from Ventura, Fresno, Southern California, Los Angeles and Orange County.

Season tickets are available for just $60 at BurlingameDragons.com.

Colorado Pride News Release - www.pridewleague.com

Wednesday, January 28, 2015

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Colorado Pride are proud to announce Sian Hudson as head coach for the 2015 W-League season. Hudson was an assistant coach and general manager for the franchise’s inaugural year in 2014, and will step up and take the reigns in 2015.

Also a director of coaching with Pride Soccer Club and former international player for Wales at every level, Hudson knows the women’s game from the grassroots level all the way to the international scene. Hudson is replacing Daniel Clitnovici, who led the new franchise to a Western Conference Finals berth in its first year.

Hudson knows she has a tough task ahead of her to repeat the success of 2014.

“We accomplished a great deal in our first year," she said. "We had tremendous off-the-field support, drew large crowds and played an attractive brand of soccer. Having been involved in this soccer community for the past decade, it was truly exciting to see all the fans at our games inspired by the quality of soccer on display on the field. We brought players in from all over the world and housed them in the local community. This gave local kids an opportunity to experience different cultures and learn what it takes to play at the highest level. I think the fact we had a melting pot of players from all over helped us create a team chemistry that was second to none.

"As I look forward to the 2015 season, my goal is to recruit a team capable of competing for a spot at the national championships, to provide a training environment that improves every player individually, and to create an environment off the field that gives the girls a summer to remember.”

As a player, Hudson played in the English Super League and represented Wales at every age group in the European Championships from 1995-2000. In 1997, she became the youngest player to ever represent her country at the full international level. Hudson also worked with the Wales National team in a coaching capacity. Her most recent coaching stint was during European Qualification in Holland, in 2007.

Hudson is in her 13th year with Pride Soccer Club and has led the program to national prominence during her tenure. She spent time as a volunteer coach at Colorado College and has helped many of her youth players acquire scholarships at the collegiate level.  She has an in-depth insight about the college game and will be using her network of contacts to build a formidable team in 2015.

"I have had the privilege of making a career in soccer and have travelled the world both as a player and coach. My goal is to provide a platform for every player to springboard their performance level and create opportunities to reach their potential, whether it be in a collegiate or professional environment. I want to continue to enhance the Colorado Pride’s reputation as a place where players participate in a professional training environment. I’d also like to facilitate players’ transition into the higher professional ranks, and continue a style of soccer that our fan base will follow passionately.”

Recently, the W-League had a record number (18) former players drafted into the NWSL, including the Pride’s Jessie Ayers. For current college players who have aspirations to play beyond graduation, the W-league is an excellent platform to gain exposure outside the college season.

Hudson holds a B.S. In Sports Coaching Science with a major in Sports Psychology and has her USSF ‘B’ License.
