Reading Makes Major SuperDraft Impact

PDL Feature

Friday, January 16, 2015

TAMPA, Fla. - It was a landmark day for the PDL in the MLS SuperDraft on Thursday as league alumni were heavily represented among the 42 players selected by MLS clubs in rounds one and two. By the end of the day, 29 of the selections had played previously in the PDL, including 12 of the top 15 picks.

One club in particular stood out on Thursday as Reading United AC had six alumni selected, and the club continued to increase its profile as a top destination for future professionals.

Leading the Reading contingent were midfielder Fatai Alashe (No. 4 overall selection by the San Jose Earthquakes), goalkeeper Alex Bono (No. 6 overall by Toronto FC), defender Skylar Thomas (No. 11 overall by Toronto FC), and Ignacio Maganto (No. 21 overall by the LA Galaxy).

Bono was the first goalkeeper selected in the draft, and the 2014 PDL All-Eastern Conference selection has been identified by many observers as a player to watch after he was called in to the U.S. National Team training camp earlier this month.

Ontario native Skylar Thomas will also follow Bono from Reading to Toronto after being taken with TFC’s third selection in the first round. At the MLS Combine last week, Thomas spoke about his former PDL and college - both attended Syracuse University - teammate’s success.

“I always knew he was a good enough player. Just to be recognized for what he’s done is excellent for himself, his family, and for Syracuse, and I’m happy for him,” Thomas said.

In the second round, Toronto FC added its third Reading United alum as it selected defender Wes Charpie, and the Houston Dynamo later added defender Oumar Ballo.

“I think it’s a great experience,” Charpie said of his time with Reading United. “You meet a lot of players from all different countries – some of the top players because at a place like Reading they hold a high standard, and it’s a really good club. The way they run things is in a very professional manner, and I think it just develops your game. It gets you into a different atmosphere, and it’s always good to get with new coaches to see what other people offer.”

The Pennsylvania club already boasts an excellent track record of producing professionals, with notable former players including Philadelphia Union forward CJ Sapong and Real Salt Lake midfielder Luke Mulholland.

The latest group of draftees will look to expand on that success when they begin training camp with their new professional clubs. For Bono, Thomas, and Charpie, they will have the advantage of built in familiarity with each other from their time in Reading.

MLS will continue with the third and fourth rounds of the draft on Tuesday, January 20, when a number of additional PDL players are expected to be chosen.

Wilmington Hammerheads FC News Release - www.wilmingtonhammerheads.com

Friday, January 16, 2015

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Wilmington Hammerheads FC announced today that the club has formed an exclusive affiliate partnership with New York City FC of Major League Soccer.

The one-year affiliation agreement focuses primarily on the development of players and providing them with a professional playing environment while also working together on rosters to maximize results for both sides.

“This affiliation is a great opportunity not only for our club, but for the city of Wilmington and our fans,” said Wilmington Hammerheads FC General Manager Jason Arnold. “We are excited to continue to enhance the development of soccer players in our country and look forward to a successful 2015 season for both clubs.”

The partnership between the two teams has been in the works for several months and included a visit from former United States Men’s National Team player and current NYCFC Sporting Director, Claudio Reyna, to Wilmington to meet with club staff.

“This partnership is massive for the entire Wilmington soccer community, from our first team, to our youth club, to our loyal supporters and hopefully to new supporters,” said Wilmington Hammerheads FC Technical Director and Head Coach Carson Porter. “These MLS/USL PRO affiliations really come down to relationships and already Claudio Reyna, Jason Kreis, Tim Pernetti and the entire NYCFC staff have opened their doors to us.”

The affiliation agreement also opens communication and shared resources off the field between each club’s front office and technical staff.

“Jason [Kreis] has included our coaching staff in his preparations towards their first season and Claudio [Reyna] took the time to come down to Wilmington to evaluate and spend time with our entire staff,” said Porter. “These types of actions are made because NYCFC is committed to excellence in whatever they put their name on, in this case it’s their USL Affiliate. We thank NYCFC for the opportunity and are fully committed to contribute and support in any way we can.”

NYCFC was announced publicly as MLS’s twentieth franchise in May 2013, a partnership with the New York Yankees with City Football Group as the majority owner. It is the first MLS club whose home will be located within the five boroughs of New York and are temporarily scheduled to play all home matches at the iconic Yankee Stadium while looking for a site within the five boroughs of New York to build a soccer specific stadium.

“Wilmington Hammerheads will provide us with a fantastic option if we feel some of our younger players would benefit from valuable first team minutes and to continue their progression at a great club that shares our playing philosophy,” said Reyna. “It’s an exciting move in the development of New York City FC.”

New York City is scheduled to play its inaugural match on March 8, 2015 against fellow MLS newcomers Orlando City SC at the Florida Citrus Bowl.

Wilmington was previously affiliated with Toronto FC last season. TFC elected to field its own USL PRO club for the upcoming 2015 season along with several other MLS clubs this year.

Austin Aztex News Release - www.austinaztex.com

Monday, January 19, 2015

AUSTIN, Tex. - The Austin Aztex have signed two new players to the 2015 roster for the club’s inaugural USL PRO season. Joining the Aztex are Ryan Roushandel and Bryce Taylor.

“We are excited to bring in Ryan and Bryce,” Aztex head coach Paul Dalglish said. “These two show the quality and hard work mentality that we strive to put on the field this season, and we know they are proud to represent the Aztex.”

Taylor, a 25-year-old forward, has gathered an array of experience playing in the PDL and USL PRO. He began his PDL career with the DFW Tornados between 2009 and 2010, before signing with Mississippi Brilla for the 2011 season. The 6-foot-1 product from Broken Arrow, Okla., joined the professional ranks of USL PRO in the 2012 season with the Wilmington Hammerheads, where he tallied six goals playing alongside current Aztex teammate Andres Cuero. He played his collegiate career at Rogers State University from 2007 to 2010.

Roushandel, a 29-year-old center back, adds a strong component to the Aztex defense thanks to the wide variety of soccer experience that he has garnered through his career. Born and raised in Alpharetta, Ga., Roushandel spent time abroad playing for Brujas F.C. in Costa Rica´s first division and for Sevilla F.C. in Puerto Rico. Roushandel came back to the United States and signed with the Atlanta Silverbacks, where he appeared in more than 13 games in 2014. He spent his collegiate career playing two years for the Clemson Tigers before transferring and closing out his collegiate career at the University of Central Florida.

These additions bring the 2015 USL PRO roster up to 11 players. The Aztex squad continues to take shape with more signings coming up in the near future as the team prepares to host the ATX PRO Challenge, a four-way tournament against three MLS teams. The clash at the capitol will take place at UT’s Mike A. Myers Stadium from February 13 through February 15, 2015.

Saint Louis FC News Release - www.saintlouisfc.com

Tuesday, January 20, 2015

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Saint Louis FC continued to bolster its roster for the 2015 USL PRO season by welcoming three more players to the club on Tuesday.

The newest signings include forward Bryan Gaul, defender Oskar Gasecki, and midfielder Charles Renken. With their arrivals, STL FC has now officially introduced eight players who will join the club for the upcoming campaign.

Bryan Gaul – F, Naperville, Ill.

Gaul, 25, arrives at STL FC with three years of professional experience. The 6 foot, 5 inch forward was selected in the first round of the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft by the Los Angeles Galaxy, and spent three seasons with LA.

“Bryan is a tall player who moves on the field like someone who is six inches shorter,” STL FC Head Coach Dale Schilly said. “He has great feet and is a high quality passer. With his size, he is also a physical presence that will help us on set pieces on both sides of the ball.

“Bryan played as a forward in college and as a left back with the Galaxy. After spending significant time watching him play, it is easy to see why he is so versatile. Fans will see a really gifted big man who can pass, cover ground, and can play in the front half of the field."

Gaul played collegiately at Bradley University from 2008-2011. During his time with the Braves, he was an All-Missouri Valley Conference selection and was also named an All-Midwest Region performer by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

Oskar Gasecki – D / Gurnee, Ill.

Gasecki, 24, has extensive international experience that includes playing with the Borussia Dortmund reserves and the U-18 Polish National Team. He was originally born in Trichardt, South Africa and has a Polish background from his father who played professionally in Poland.

“Oskar is athletic, powerful, technically very solid, and has a knack for reading key moments in a match,” Schilly said. “He is a player who can help build the game and establish rhythm, but at the same time, is extremely powerful and loves to defend.

“Our supporters will get to watch a young man who, at 24 years old, has already amassed many incredible experiences within the game.  His competitive nature and mature insight will make him an immediate contributor.”

Gasecki played two years at Western Illinois University, where he was named to the Summit League’s All-Conference, All-Newcomer, and All-Tournament teams.

“Oskar is a freak in the way he approaches fitness,” WIU Head Coach Eric Johnson said. “What he eats, how he works in the weight room, and his lifestyle make him a total professional and really gives him an edge on the field.”

Charles Renken – M / Edwardsville, Ill.

Renken, 21, is a native of Zambia who was a member of the Portland Timbers in 2012. He also trained with Gimo IF FK in Sweden in 2013, and spent 2014 in USL PRO with Arizona United.

“Charles is a very skillful and highly-technical player,” Schilly added. “He is a two-way midfielder who can maintain possession and put players in on the attack.

“For such a young player, Charles has already gained valuable experience at the youth, professional, national, and international levels. He has the chance to be a major contributor to this team.”

Renken played in 10 games with Hoffenheim’s U-19 team, his first as a professional. Before joining Hoffenheim, Renken was enrolled in the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency Program for the 2009-10 season and trained with English clubs Arsenal and Reading, as well as German side 1860 Munich.

Before going pro, Renken was an accomplished youth player at the international level. His youth international career began with the U.S. U-14 and U-15 Boys’ National Team before joining the U.S. U-17 Residency Program in 2007. He was also invited to a 10-day camp with the U.S. U-20 and U-23 National Teams in Duisburg, Germany.

Arizona United SC News Release -- www.arizonaunited.com

Tuesday, January 20, 2015

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Looking to build upon the foundation from last year’s inaugural season, Arizona United Soccer Club has announced the re-signing of key defenders London Woodberry and Tyler Ruthven.

The additions of Woodberry and Ruthven increases Arizona United SC’s roster size to eight players under contract for the 2015 season.

“London had a very successful year for us in 2014,” said Arizona United SC Head Coach Michael Dellorusso. “He is beginning to come into his own at the professional level. He is a valuable player for our club and will play a big part in our success this season.”

Entering his third professional season, Woodberry re-joins Arizona United SC after scoring three goals in 26 appearances in all competitions in 2014. Woodberry notched his first professional goal in Arizona United SC’s thrilling 3-2 win over the Portland Timbers U-23s in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup.

“I’m very pleased to be coming back for my second season with Arizona United,” London Woodberry added. “I’m looking forward to having a great season with a lot of success.”

Woodberry recorded his first USL PRO goal against the Sacramento Republic FC, and closed out his scoring account with a late-season goal against the Seattle Sounders Reserves. Woodberry appeared in all three of Arizona United SC’s U.S. Open Cup matches, going the distance against the OKC Energy FC in the third round and Major League Soccer’s LA Galaxy in the fourth.

The former Homegrown player signee played in FC Dallas’ United States Soccer Development Academy before joining the University of Maryland Terrapins in 2009. At Maryland, Woodberry appeared in 77 matches, scored four goals, and notched four assists.

Woodberry’s relationship with Dellorusso extends to his collegiate days at the University of Maryland. From 2010-12, Woodberry was coached by Dellorusso, who served as the top assistant for the Terrapins.

Featuring at center back and right back, Ruthven amassed over 1,500 minutes in 21 league appearances in his first year at Arizona United SC. Ruthven appeared in three of Arizona United SC’s U.S. Open Cup matches, and was named to the starting lineup against the Timbers U-23s and LA Galaxy.

“We are very happy to have Tyler return to the club for a second year,” Dellorusso said. “He is an integral member of our team on and off the field. We will look for him to grow upon year one and he will be a major leader for our club moving forward.”

“I trust the front office and that made my decision to return very easy for me,” said Tyler Ruthven. “I am excited about the new additions and cannot wait for the season to get started.”

Hailing from Alpharetta, Ga., Ruthven joined Arizona United SC after splitting time with Swedish side Brage, and Finnish club KuPS in 2013. Ruthven first turned professional in 2010, signing with the Harrisburg City Islanders before moving over to the Atlanta Silverbacks in 2011. Ruthven moved to the top division in North America when he signed with the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer in 2012. Ruthven began his collegiate career in 2006 at the University of San Francisco, playing with current Arizona United SC defender Rob Valentino for one season before he transferred to the University of South Carolina the following year.

Vercollone Eager to Lead Switchbacks

USL PRO Feature

Tuesday, January 20, 2015

TAMPA, Fla. - When assembling a team for the first time, an ideal place to start is with an experienced and reliable player to anchor the center of the field. It sounds simple enough, but finding a player with that resume is far from a guarantee.

Fortunately for Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, the expansion USL PRO club was able to find a player who fits that profile perfectly - and was eager to join the new club - in long-time USL PRO standout Luke Vercollone. The veteran central midfielder’s family is based in Colorado, and the prospect of playing close to home appealed to Vercollone from Day One of the Switchbacks’ existence.

“It was a pretty smooth and seamless move,” Vercollone said. “It was very much what I hoped for, and being from Fort Collins – my wife is from here and we bought a house here two years ago – once the Colorado Springs team was announced, it’s been my goal to play for them this year, so that was really exciting when [the club] got announced.”

Vercollone has been a mainstay with the Richmond Kickers since he joined the club in 2008, appearing in 157 league matches and scoring 14 goals. His professional experience dates back to 2004, when he was a member of the New England Revolution, and he moved to the USL in 2006 when he signed with the Charleston Battery.

The move from established clubs like Charleston and Richmond to a first-year club in Colorado Springs will be a major change, but Vercollone is looking forward to the challenge the new situation presents.

“You have a lot to prove. I’ve been on Richmond for seven years, and the fans and the team and the coaches and the players all have an idea about my abilities. I feel like I have a lot to prove here in the Springs,” Vercollone said.

“I think a big goal for the team, realistically, is to make the playoffs because it’s always difficult for a new team. I actually have high expectations. I think playing in Colorado Springs in the higher altitude, I think we’ll have a big home-field advantage with the beautiful new stadium and the hometown fans, and just being a fit team. So I want to make the playoffs and I want to have a really good home record.”

The 32 year-old has met with Switchbacks head coach Steve Trittschuh, and expects to play primarily as a defensive midfielder, while also taking on a role as a veteran leader. Though he comes in with an established pedigree, he still expects to compete every day for a place in the team.

“It will be a lot different than Richmond, but I think we’ll rise to the challenges, and I think there are a lot of new teams in the league next year, so it’s not like we’re at a huge disadvantage because there are so many new teams anyway. A lot of success is going to be how we respond to the different challenges and circumstances. I don’t expect everything to be smooth sailing because there are a lot of kinks that we’ll have to work out, and hopefully we’ll have the right mindset with that, and we adjust to the challenges and we succeed and rise to the challenges.”

In preparation for the upcoming season, Vercollone began training in December, and has gradually increased the intensity of his training as the season draws closer.

Vercollone has also developed a successful soccer business, which he operates year-round. The business, Mighty Kicks, has franchises across the country which help bring young children closer to the game of soccer. He manages the business from his family’s home in Colorado, and plans to continue once his playing days are over.

“With the three little kids, being near family was very important to me, so it was pretty much play with the Switchbacks or retire,” Vercollone said. “I love soccer, and I’ve been playing professionally for 11 years. I want to play it as long as I can, so to have a team that’s local to family is an absolute blessing for us.”

Louisville City FC News Release - www.louisvillecityfc.com

Wednesday, January 21, 2015

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville City FC, the new USL PRO team that will start play in March of 2015, announced today the signing of former MLS and U.S. Under-20 National Team midfielder Conor Shanosky. Shanosky, a 23-year-old from Sterling, Va., joins Louisville City after five seasons with D.C. United.

“Conor is a massive signing for us,” Louisville City FC head coach James O’Connor stated. “To have had MLS, U.S. National Team and CONCACAF Champions League experience, Conor is someone that we are extremely excited to join us, and his character and leadership will definitely make a difference this season.”

Shanosky joins Louisville City FC after spending two years on loan with the D.C. United USL PRO affiliate, the Richmond Kickers. He scored three goals in 31 total appearances for the Kickers with two of those goals coming in the 2013 regular season championship year. The season before, while on loan to the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers, the holding-midfielder played 28 games as he helped them finish fifth that year, but were knocked out in the first round of the 2012 postseason. In 2011, Shanosky made his USL PRO debut, playing a pair of games for the Harrisburg City Islanders.

This past October, Shanosky scored the game winner for D.C. United in a CONCACAF Champions league match-up with Tauro F.C. out of Jamaica. His goal in the 24th minute allowed United to move through the CCL Group play unscathed.

At the age of 19, Shanosky exercised his right to a homegrown player contract and signed with D.C. United in 2010. In the same year, Shanosky played eight games for the U.S. U-20 National Team that won the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland by beating Northern Ireland 3-0 in the Final. The D.C. United Academy product played in five games for the Black-and-Red, including three starts, during the 2013 season.

The 6-foot-4, 180-pound defender is now the second player to join Louisville City FC that has played for the U.S. Youth National Team, the other being Kadeem Dacres. Shanosky is the first to sign with Major League Soccer experience.

Toronto FC News Release - www, torontofc.ca

Wednesday, January 21, 2014

Toronto, Ont. - Toronto FC announced Wednesday that the club has formed Toronto FC II, a professional team that will compete in USL PRO.

Toronto FC II begins competing in USL PRO during the 2015 season and plays their home games at the Ontario Soccer Centre located in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada. The team will train out of the club’s Kia Training Grounds.

“I would like to thank MLSE for the continued support of Toronto FC. I believe that MLS clubs with their own USL PRO teams’ in-market will be able to close the gap between academy and our first team on a number of levels,” said Toronto FC General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “This investment signifies our commitment to winning and preparing our young players, both Canadian and our draft picks to become professionals.”

“I have been working to bring a professional sports organization to Vaughan since becoming Mayor and today my dream has become reality,” said Mayor of Vaughan Maurizio Bevilacqua. “On behalf of Vaughan Council, I would like to thank MLSE, Toronto FC, Tim Bezbatchenko, OSA and Ron Smale – it’s been an honour to work with them to bring this new team to Vaughan. This is fantastic news for our city and bodes well for our mission to become world class. As someone who has loved and played soccer my entire life, I am pleased to say that I have purchased the first four season tickets and am looking forward to cheering on Vaughan’s new team this summer.”

“This agreement further enhances our ongoing relationship and strong partnership with Toronto FC and the city of Vaughan. More importantly, the investment in a facility such as this on the existing OSA complex will provide a significant boost not only to the soccer community but also to the area as a whole for years to come,” said Ontario Soccer Association President Ron Smale. “Beyond TFC’s USL PRO team, we will be able to host high-level soccer competitions for League1 and the Ontario Player Development League at a first-class facility - a facility which can also be utilized by the City of Vaughan for other community events as well. This is a true partnership that will benefit everyone.”

“I am very grateful for this opportunity given to me by Toronto FC to continue my development as a coach,” said Toronto FC II Head Coach Jason Bent. “I look forward to working with these young men and aid in their growth as professional soccer players and leaders in the community.”

The Toronto FC II logo, unveiled for the first time Wednesday during a press conference at Vaughan City Hall, features the iconic Toronto FC MLS logo and brand, but differentiates itself with the II behind the crest. This allows every player within the organization from the U10 level all the way up to the first team to feel the collective value of ALL FOR ONE.

DelPiccolo is a versatile midfielder who most recently played for USL PRO club Arizona United SC. He tallied 2,187 minutes over 27 games in 2014, scoring two goals and adding three assists. “Paolo is a great passer who will aid us in recovering the ball and starting attacks from the midfield,” said Jeffries. “His ability to keep possession of the ball and to make the right pass will be instrumental in our attacking buildup.”

The 23-year-old DelPiccolo originally was drafted 27th overall by the Montreal Impact in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. However, DelPiccolo opted to move abroad and signed with Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt in January 2013. He recorded one assist in seven games with Frankfurt II, the club’s U-23 squad playing in the German fourth division. DelPiccolo was released by Frankfurt at the end of their 2012-13 season and officially joined the Impact on July 5, 2013.

While DelPiccolo did not see any action with the Impact’s first team in 2013, the midfielder scored two goals in the MLS Reserve League and appeared in the team’s international friendly against the Haitian Men’s National Team on June 22 at Stade Saputo. DelPiccolo was waived by the Impact at the end of the season and subsequently was signed by the New England Revolution in the MLS Waiver Draft on Nov. 25, 2013. However, he was waived by the MLS club just before the start of the 2014 season and signed with Arizona United SC on April 10, 2014.

“Paolo is a player who fits the style of play we want to see,” said Colorado Rapids Senior Director of Soccer Development and Independence Technical Director Brian Crookham. “He has very good feet and is a good passer of the ball so he can keep the game moving. Paolo’s attitude toward the game is tremendous. He showed well in the time he spent with us in Denver and it is exciting to have him in the system.” The Rapids and Independence signed a two-year MLS/USL PRO affiliation agreement in September 2014.

A native of Wheat Ridge, Co., DelPiccolo has additional experience with the U.S. National Team, having started three games as a defender with the U-20 squad during the 2008 Copa Chivas in Mexico. He also participated in the 2009 Milk Cup in Northern Ireland as a member of the U-18 team. DelPiccolo went on to become a four-year starter at the University of Louisville, a perennial collegiate powerhouse. In 2012, his senior year, he was named a first team NSCAA All-Great Lakes honoree and earned first team All-Big East honors. DelPiccolo finished his collegiate career as Louisville’s all-time assist leader with 23 career assists.

DelPiccolo has been spending the offseason back home in Colorado, training with a group of guys from the USL and MLS. He said his main goal going into the 2015 season is for the Independence to make the playoffs. “Everyone wants to win a championship, and that is one of our goals as well,” said DelPiccolo. “But it starts with making the playoffs.” As far as personal goals, DelPiccolo said, “It’s to contribute as much as I can, whether it’s goals or defending. I just want to contribute as much as I can and do whatever coach asks of me.”

The Independence roster now includes DelPiccolo, Patrick Slogic, Jorge Herrera and Ben Newnam, with more player announcements expected in the next week. The team will begin training camp in mid-February and kick off its inaugural USL PRO season in late March.

Wilmington Hammerheads FC News Release - www.wilmingtonhammerheads.com

Thursday, January 22, 2015

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Wilmington Hammerheads FC announced today the addition of midfielder Corben Bone to the 2015 USL PRO regular season roster.

"I am extremely excited to be joining the Wilmington Hammerheads for the 2015 season,” said Bone. “The short time I was with the team during the 2014 season, displayed the quality of not only the team, but the town of Wilmington."

Bone returns to the Hammerheads after being on loan from Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union towards the end of last season as the team competed to claim a spot in the playoffs. During his short stint with the Hammerheads last season, the midfielder tallied two goals in nine matches.

“After Corben’s loan stint with us last year, it became a major priority to get him signed on with us this season,” said Wilmington Hammerheads FC Technical Director and Head Coach Carson Porter. “His soccer is of the highest quality and speaks for itself, but he also brings great energy and spirit into our locker room.”

Bone recently arrived in New York City to partake in preseason training with the team’s newly appointed MLS affiliate, New York City FC.

“The timing of our partnership with NYCFC was perfect and we are really happy to start this partnership with Corben joining their preseason,” said Porter. “Corben is a guy that Jason Kreis has liked for some time and it was a chance for them to get a look at him, as well as a chance for Corben to sharpen his game before he joins us in March.”

He and the rest of the NYCFC contingency will travel from New York to Jacksonville, Fla., and set up shop for the next eight days as the team prepares for its inaugural MLS match versus Orlando City SC. The group that is traveling includes World Cup winner and former Atletico Madrid and Barcelona star David Villa, who recently joined NYCFC.

"The opportunity to train with NYCFC this preseason is one that I am very grateful for,” said Bone. “They are one of the most anticipated clubs in MLS history, and to be a part of that, however small, is a great honor. It gives me a unique chance to prepare for the upcoming season with the Hammerheads by playing with some of the top players in MLS. The partnership between NYCFC and the Hammerheads is a very exciting one for both clubs, and I'm sure the players, staff, and fans from both sides are anxious to help each other become better organizations."

Prior to coming to Wilmington, Bone spent the last four seasons in MLS; three with the Chicago Fire and his most recent with Philadelphia Union.

“At this club the players come first, period,” said Porter. “I don’t think Corben has played his last game in MLS, and as he helps us chase our goals, we will help him chase his. We are delighted to have him back.”

Pittsburgh Riverhounds News Release - www.riverhounds.com

Thursday, January 22, 2015

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Riverhounds are pleased to announce that central defender Anthony Arena has agreed terms for the 2015 USL PRO season.

The Riverhounds are also pleased to announce that Jamaican goalkeeper Ryan Thompson and Ghanaian midfielder Stephen Okai have agreed terms. In addition, Canadian forward Miroslav Cabrilo will return to Highmark Stadium after signing his first professional contract with the Riverhounds last year.

Arena appeared in 16 league games for the Riverhounds last year while on loan from Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo franchise. His displays earned him Pittsburgh's Defensive Player of the Year award.

"Anthony is a key signing for us," said Riverhounds head coach Mark Steffens. "He brings great leadership on and off the field and his professionalism will impact our younger players in a positive way.

"He will stabilize our back four and be the backbone to our defensive unit."

Arena, 24, spent two seasons with the Dynamo after being selected in the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft. The Kenmore, Wash. native made his MLS debut in June 2013. He has represented the United States at the Under-18 and U-20 levels.

Thompson, 30, has played for Jamaica’s national team on two occasions after previously appearing for the Reggae Boyz at the Under-20 and U-23 levels. He has been a regular part of the national set-up in recent years. Thompson spent last season with the Tampa Bay Rowdies before helping his country to lift the Caribbean Cup in November.

The Kingston native became the first Jamaican to play in the UEFA Champions League in July 2011 when he kept goal for Ireland’s Shamrock Rovers in a 1-0 loss at F.C. Copenhagen. Thompson later played against English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, Russia’s Rubin Kazan and PAOK of Greece when the Rovers reached the group stages of the Europa League.

“We expect big things out of Ryan,” said Riverhounds head coach Mark Steffens. “He can be acrobatic, he has the ability to make big saves under pressure, and he is also very clean and steady.”

Okai, 25, played for Steffens during the 2013 season when the Charlotte Eagles reached the USL PRO Championship Game before losing to Orlando City. He spent last year with the Orange County Blues, scoring twice in 26 league appearances.

“Stephen is the consummate playmaker who makes everyone around him better,” Steffens said. “He is extremely hard to dispossess.”

Cabrilo, a graduate of Robert Morris University, joined the Riverhounds last May after impressing Pittsburgh’s coaching staff in pre-season games against RMU and in training sessions with the team. The 22-year-old from Hamilton, Ontario featured in 12 league games last year and scored two goals.

“I like Miro’s ability to hold the ball while under a lot of pressure,” Steffens said. “He can also be creative in the attacking third and is a quality finisher.”
