PDL Feature

TAMPA, Fla. - It was a landmark day for the PDL in the MLS SuperDraft on Thursday as league alumni were heavily represented among the 42 players selected by MLS clubs in rounds one and two. By the end of the day, 29 of the selections had played previously in the PDL, including 12 of the top 15 picks.
One club in particular stood out on Thursday as Reading United AC had six alumni selected, and the club continued to increase its profile as a top destination for future professionals.
Leading the Reading contingent were midfielder Fatai Alashe (No. 4 overall selection by the San Jose Earthquakes), goalkeeper Alex Bono (No. 6 overall by Toronto FC), defender Skylar Thomas (No. 11 overall by Toronto FC), and Ignacio Maganto (No. 21 overall by the LA Galaxy).
Bono was the first goalkeeper selected in the draft, and the 2014 PDL All-Eastern Conference selection has been identified by many observers as a player to watch after he was called in to the U.S. National Team training camp earlier this month.
Ontario native Skylar Thomas will also follow Bono from Reading to Toronto after being taken with TFC’s third selection in the first round. At the MLS Combine last week, Thomas spoke about his former PDL and college - both attended Syracuse University - teammate’s success.
“I always knew he was a good enough player. Just to be recognized for what he’s done is excellent for himself, his family, and for Syracuse, and I’m happy for him,” Thomas said.
In the second round, Toronto FC added its third Reading United alum as it selected defender Wes Charpie, and the Houston Dynamo later added defender Oumar Ballo.
“I think it’s a great experience,” Charpie said of his time with Reading United. “You meet a lot of players from all different countries – some of the top players because at a place like Reading they hold a high standard, and it’s a really good club. The way they run things is in a very professional manner, and I think it just develops your game. It gets you into a different atmosphere, and it’s always good to get with new coaches to see what other people offer.”
The Pennsylvania club already boasts an excellent track record of producing professionals, with notable former players including Philadelphia Union forward CJ Sapong and Real Salt Lake midfielder Luke Mulholland.
The latest group of draftees will look to expand on that success when they begin training camp with their new professional clubs. For Bono, Thomas, and Charpie, they will have the advantage of built in familiarity with each other from their time in Reading.
MLS will continue with the third and fourth rounds of the draft on Tuesday, January 20, when a number of additional PDL players are expected to be chosen.
