Laredo Heat SC News Release -- www.laredoheatsc.com

Friday, August 8, 2014

LAREDO, Texas -- Even though the 2014 PDL season concluded just over a week ago for the Laredo Heat Soccer Club, members of the coaching staff and several local players still took time to visited three Boys & Girls Clubs of Laredo this past week.

The club partnered together with long time sponsor International Bank of Commerce (IBC) – Laredo to provide financial literacy lessons and a soccer clinic to children at the participating Boys & Girls Clubs.

IBC and the Laredo Heat visited the Benavides Boys & Girls Club on Tuesday, August 5th, the Northwest Boys & Girls Club on Wednesday, August 6th and today, they concluded their visits at the Lamar Bruni Vergara Boys & Girls Club.

“We had a blast visiting all three clubs and meeting all the great kids at the different locations,” said Heat Midfielder Greg Mulamba. “It was a wonderful experience all around for everyone involved because of the way the program was set up to include sports and real life issues.

“At the end of the day, I personally believe that every child that we came into contact with not only learned a little about soccer but they also learned some real life lessons that will help them in some way with their future”.

IBC has been a long-time supporter of the Boys & Girls Clubs and they strongly believe that the children of Laredo benefit from the clubs’ programs and because of their partnership with the Laredo Heat Soccer Club, they felt they could use sportsmanship as a tool to teach the children discipline, dedication and commitment.

W-League Feature

Thursday, August 7, 2014

The United States and Canadian Women’s U20 National Teams will look to get their tournaments back on track on Friday as they face the second game of group play at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup. Both sides, which feature standout W-League talent, fell in their opening games of the tournament, making victory vital as they face Brazil and Finland respectively.

The United States conceded two second-half goals as it fell to Germany on Tuesday night in Edmonton, but returns to Commonwealth Stadium on Friday (10 p.m. ET, ESPNU) in the knowledge that victory against the Brazilians could move it into second place going to the last group game against China. Brazil and China drew 1-1 in Group C’s other game on Tuesday night, as Byanca’s goal for Brazil was canceled out by an 89th-minute equalizer by Zhu Zhang.

The United States will try to get going offensively behind former Colorado Rush standout Lindsay Horan, who had chances to give her side the lead against Germany, but was unable to finish. The 2011 All-League selection said despite the missed opportunities, the side was pleased it was able to create a number of good chances.

“Our whole team created a lot of opportunities and obviously I’m a little disappointed with myself because I couldn’t finish those, but overall I’m happy how we played,” Horan said. “Creating that many opportunities against a great team like Germany is a really good step for us.”

Canada, meanwhile, was unable to take advantage of any of its late opportunities as they fell 1-0 to Ghana in Toronto on Tuesday night in Group A action (8 p.m. ET, ESPN3). The hosts now face what is essentially a must-win as they face a Finnish side that also fell in its opening game, 2-1 against North Korea.

Ghana and North Korea meet earlier in the evening at BMO Field, which will allow Canada the chance to know where it stands entering its second contest. Toronto Lady Lynx goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan, whose error led to Ghana’s goal, said she and her teammates will learn from their opening defeat, and were looking forward for the chance to get back on the field on Friday.

“For the moment, we’re still in the running and we’re focusing on our upcoming match with Finland,” Sheridan said. “My team-mates can be sure that I’ll be ready for it.”

USL PRO Game Report

CHARLESTON, S.C. — A late goal by David Clemens earned Dayton Dutch Lions FC a 2-2 draw with the Charleston Battery in head coach Matt Weston's first game in charge on Friday night at Blackbaud Stadium. Dane Kelly and Adam Mena twice gave the Battery the lead, but Charleston was unable to hold on in front of a crowd of 3,081 fans.

“We had the lead and the three points in hand, but we have to close it out,” said Battery head coach Mike Anhaeuser. “Unfortunately, we had a little breakdown in the back and they put it in. We need to keep our focus now. We have six more points to get at home [in this home stand].”

The Battery jumped out to an early lead in the fifth minute. Kelly found himself with just Dayton goalkeeper Matt Williams to beat after midfielder Jarad van Schaik collected a turnover and quickly passed to Kelly in the middle of the field. Kelly took a few dribbles and calmly slotted the ball home from just inside the penalty area.

Dayton responded quickly on a corner in the 10th minute. After Battery defender John Wilson made a tackle to force a corner, Dayton forward Cameron Vickers' corner found the head of Brock Granger, whose finish found the top right corner of the goal.

After some back and forth play, Charleston was able to regain the lead in the 23rd minute. Battery midfielder Justin Portillo collected a pass from midfielder Maikel Chang at the top of the Dayton penalty area, and used some nifty footwork to pass multiple Dayton defenders. After finding himself inside the six-yard box, Portillo passed across the goalmouth and found a streaking Mena, who poked the ball past Williams to make it 2-1.

Neither team was able to do much early in the second half but as the game started winding down, the Battery defense began to sit back and Dayton was able to tie the game with five minutes to go. After a defensive miscue put the ball at his feet, Clemens scored his first professional goal with a shot from the edge of the penalty area that slipped between the legs of Charleston keeper Odisnel Cooper.

Charleston pushed forward in the final minutes, but desperate attempts from Dante Marini and Haviel Cordoves were defended well and the 2-2 score held until the final whistle.

Charleston will remain at home for its next two matches, facing off against the Orange County Blues on Wednesday night at Blackbaud Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET, followed by a Friday-night contest against Rochester.

Tickets for Battery home games are available starting at $10, to purchase tickets or for more information please call 843-971-GOAL (4625) or visit www.charlestonbattery.com.

USL PRO Game Report

Friday, August 8, 2014

PITTSBURGH -- A second-half goal by Michael Green allowed the Pittsburgh Riverhounds to continue their late season surge as they defeated Orange County Blues FC 1-0 at Highmark Stadium on Friday night for their sixth win in their last eight USL PRO matches. Green's goal in the 54th minute, coupled with a solid team defensive performance, helped the Riverhounds remain in the thick of the USL PRO playoff picture.

Goalkeeper Mike Lisch posted his third shutout of the year, with four saves, and consistently came off his line to thwart numerous crosses and corners to keep the Blues off the scoresheet. Lisch came up big numerous times, but none bigger than on the last sequence of the match, with time ticking down in stoppage time.

The Blues' Stephen Okai and Dersu Abolfathi hooked up on a give-and-go pass, which Okai had a clear path on the right side of the goal. Lisch reacted quickly, coming out to take away Okai's shooting angle to get the ball, and to preserve the win.

"I kept saying to myself, stay focused. I know I am going to have come up big at some point. They're going to stack it on us at the end," said Lisch. "I made myself as big as possible, came out, cut the angle, and came up with the save. That's what you're there for."

After a scoreless first half, the Riverhounds and interim head coach, Niko Katic didn't panic.

"Soccer is a wonderful game," said Katic. "Tonight, it was a chess game. We told the guys in the locker room. It will come. We remained patient, and, it came. We scored a great goal. We showed what we're made of tonight."

The Hounds capitalized nine minutes into the second half, as Danny Earls collected a deflected ball on the right side of the penalty area, and played the ball back to Green, who came through to send a right-footed blast past Blues goalkeeper Aaron Perez for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

"What can I say about Mike Green," said Katic. "Unbelievable. He showed what he can do. On the ball, off the ball. Closing defenders down. Taking guys on, one-on-one. And he scored a wonderful goal."

The Riverhounds kept applying pressure, and in the 78th minute Seth C'deBaca had two fantastic opportunities to double the lead.  After receiving a nice pass from Kevin Kerr, C'deBaca lined up a shot from the right side that was deflected, and bounced off the post.

Moments later, C'deBaca had a clear shot from just inside the box that hit the crossbar and bounced downward, away from danger.

The Blues mounted some late pressure, including four corner kicks in the final 10 minutes as they made a furious effort to end their five-game losing streak. Lisch's late save would preserve victory for  the Riverhounds, however, as they moved into a three-way tie for eighth place in the USL PRO standings with Wilmington and Charleston.

"How the other results [in USL PRO play] will go, we are not worried about," said Katic. "Credit to all of the guys. They've been training hard. This was a payoff. But we got to keep it going."

The Riverhounds' next match will be next Saturday, August 16, as they travel to face Arizona United SC at 10:30 p.m. ET. The Hounds return home on Saturday, August 24 to take on FC Dallas Reserves at 3 p.m. ET.

USL PRO Game Report

Saturday, August 9, 2014

CARSON, Calif. – LA Galaxy II defeated Arizona United SC 3-2 on Saturday night at StubHub Center as first-half goals from Charlie Rugg, Bradford Jamieson IV and Andre Auras were enough to earn three points on the evening and remain in fourth place in the USL PRO standings. Arizona mounted a second-half comeback with goals by Paolo DelPiccolo and Long Tan,  but the Galaxy II were able to hold on late to claim victory.

Los Dos (12-7-4, 40 points) opened the scoring early when Rugg fired a shot past Arizona goalkeeper Evan Newton to put the hosts up, 1-0 in the ninth minute. Galaxy Homegrown Player Jose Villarreal started the attack when he passed a ball across the box to find Rugg with just the keeper to beat before the striker calmly slotted it home.

Just a minute later, Galaxy II doubled their lead when Galaxy Homegrown Player Bradford Jamieson IV got on the end of a loose ball in the box to score with a first-time shot. Rugg rounded the right side before an Arizona defender deflected a ball that fell to Jamieson IV, who made no mistake with his shot to add the second goal of the evening.

In the 37th minute, Los Dos added a third on a free kick from Auras. Jamieson IV made a run down the left side before he cut in and earned a foul at the edge of the penalty area. Auras stepped up and sent a curling shot that went in the upper-right corner of the net, just past the fingertips of a diving Newton.

Arizona answered in the 60th minute when Brad Stisser found DelPiccolo for a goal. Stisser whipped in a cross to DelPiccolo, who launched a diving header past Galaxy II goalkeeper Brian Rowe to put United on the board. Just over 10 minutes later, United added a second when Tan got on the end of a Matt Kassel free kick to put the visitors within one, but Los Dos stood firm on defense for the rest of the match to hold on for the 3-2 victory.

LA Galaxy defender Todd Dunivant, who has recently been sidelined with an abdominal injury, recorded 78 minutes for Los Dos. His last MLS minutes came April 6 against Chivas USA, but he has been a part of the LA Galaxy’s 18-man roster in the past two matches.

Curt Onalfo’s side will now travel to take on OKC Energy FC at Pribil Stadium next Saturday, Aug. 16 at 5 p.m. PT live on www.lagalaxy.com.

W-League Feature

Saturday, August 9, 2014

Both the United States and Canadian U20 Women’s National Teams scored dramatic victories in their second games of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup on Friday night. 2011 W-League All-League selection Lindsay Horan, formerly of the Colorado Rush, scored with eight minutes to go to lift the U.S. to a 1-0 victory against Brazil, while the Toronto Lady Lynx’s Nichelle Prince helped her side rally from a two-goal deficit to defeat Finland 3-2.

The wins kept both side’s hopes of advancing to the knockout stage intact as they enter the final game of group play next Tuesday. The United States will face China, who took a remarkable 5-5 draw with Germany on Friday evening, while Canada will face North Korea, which took victory against Ghana for its second win of the tournament.

The U.S. U20s weren’t able to find much attacking success in the opening half against Brazil, but came out positively after the break as Margaret Purce saw an early chance come back off the crossbar. The LA Blues’ Mackenzy Doniek set up Taylor Racciopi for another good opportunity in the 52nd minute, only for her header to go over the crossbar.

Dayton Dutch Lions standout Rose Lavelle, who took Player of the Game honors, also went close in the 68th minute as a good move by the U.S. sprang her free on the right side of the penalty area, only for the All-Southeastern Conference selection’s shot to be saved and the rebound to deflect off Horan and wide.

The current Paris St. Germain standout would find the back of the net in the 82nd minute, however, as she finished from 12 yards after an outstanding piece of work by Summer Green to create the opportunity.

“I am very proud of the players staying disciplined and sticking to the way we wanted to defend,” U.S. coach Michelle French said. “We knew that it was vitally important to get three points and I am very happy. We did well and I am proud of the team. But we have a lot more still to improve on ahead of the China game.”

Canada trailed 2-0 against Finland at the halftime break, putting the hosts on the brink of elimination from the tournament, but the Colorado Rush’s Janine Beckie made an immediate impact as she came on to start the second half with a goal three minutes in. The substitute rose to head home a cross from Prince that crept over the line off the base of the post.

Three minutes later, Prince played provider again as Canada drew level when the Laval Comets’ Valerie Sanderson finished off another chance created by the Lady Lynx forward. A cut-back from the byline found Sanderson, and her shot deflected off the goalkeeper’s legs and into the corner of the net to make it 2-2.

Prince herself then completed the comeback with five minutes to go, as she was on hand to tap home from close range after Beckie’s initial shot from the left side of the penalty area was only parried by Finnish goalkeeper Vera Varis.

“At half time, I told my players that despite the two goals against us, we had enjoyed a decent first half,” Canada coach Andrew Olivieri said. “We had the best opportunities and they just needed reminded that we were the better side. It’s a long tournament, we have to make sure that everyone is ready, and that’s why I made changes in the starting line-up and at halftime. Now we have to gone on to our next match and play better than we did tonight.”

Both Canada and the United States sit second in their respective groups heading to Tuesday night’s final group games, but both will be aiming for victory to secure their places in the knockout stage. The U.S. would advance with a draw against China in Moncton (4 p.m. ET, ESPNU) should Germany defeat Brazil, while Canada could also advance as they face North Korea (8 p.m. ET, ESPN3) without taking victory should Finland defeat Ghana. Both teams, however, will be aiming for stronger performances as they try to book their places in the last eight.

USL PRO Game Report

Saturday, August 9, 2014

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Robbie Derschang had a pair of goals to lead the Harrisburg City Islanders (9-8-6) to their biggest win of the season, a 3-2 victory over USL PRO leaders Orlando City SC (15-2-4) in front of a crowd of more than 2,000 fans at Skyline Sports Complex on Saturday night. The victory extended the City Islanders' winning streak to four games as they moved into fifth place in the USL PRO standings.

The first half was full of action as the City Islanders claimed a two-goal halftime advantage despite being outshot by Orlando, five shots to three. Derschang scored both of his goals before the break, as the first arrived in the 21st minute when Harrisburg was awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area. Derschang's shot from 20 yards curled over the defensive wall and beat Orlando goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo to the upper-right corner. Derschang then took advantage of a 30th-minute penalty kick after Antoine Hoppenot was brought down in the penalty area by Brad Rusin for a 2-0 lead.

Orlando created plenty of first half opportunities, but Lions leading scorer Kevin Molino could not cash in on any of his four shots. His best chance was denied by Harrisburg goalkeeper Nick Noble, who fell to his hip to make a spectacular foot save as the Trinidad & Tobago internation darted into the left side of the penalty area. Molino was constantly found the ball in open space, but the Isles' back line held firm to keep the first half clean sheet intact.

The Islanders had a chance to add to their lead in the opening minute of the second half when Morgan Langley was taken down in the penalty area to earn a second penalty kick. Hoppenot stepped up to the spot, but sent his shot over the crossbar to keep the score 2-0. However, Hoppenot would redeem himself after Yann Ekra sent a nice through-ball into the right channel in the 52nd minute, which sprang a breakaway for the Philadelphia Union loanee, who finished into the left corner of the net.

Orlando showed its resilience and would storm back in the final 10 minutes. Molino would use his head to finally find the net after a lob from Justin Clark in the 81st minute, and the Lions added a second in the 87th minute as Giuseppe Gentile finished from close range after a cross by Adama Mbengue. The late burst wouldn't be enough as Orlando suffered its second loss of their season.

The City Islanders return to action when they visit the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and Orlando City SC next Saturday night. Harrisburg's next home match will come on August 28th when the Philadelphia Union will visit Skyline Sports complex for an affiliate friendly.

Kickers Take Victory Against Eagles

USL PRO Game Report

Saturday, August 9, 2014

RICHMOND, Va. – First-half goals from George Davis IV and Luke Vercollone were enough to see the Richmond Kickers to a 2-1 victory against the Charlotte Eagles on Saturday night at City Stadium. The victory moved the Kickers within one point of first place Orlando City, and extended Richmond's undefeated streak to 20 games.

Richmond opened with a large portion of the possession, and their first chance arrived on a third-minute miscue by Charlotte defender JJ Greer. Greer gave the ball away to Matthew Delicâte just outside the penalty area, and the Richmond forward was in on goal. Delicâte danced around the goalkeeper, but before he could shoot the ball was poked away by Bilal Duckett.

Richmond broke the deadlock in the 18th minute on Davis IV’s ninth goal of the season. Davis IV received a pass from Alex Lee at the top of the penalty area, and his effort caught keeper Alec Kann flatfooted as he found the right corner of the net.

Charlotte’s only chance of the first half came in the 24th minute when Jorge Herrera found Darren Toby at the top of the penalty area. Toby’s left-footed shot beat Richmond goalkeeper Ryan Taylor, but went ringing off the left post.

Richmond doubled its lead in the 28th minute through Luke Vercollone. Samuel Asante flicked the ball over the head of a defender, before sliding the ball through the defense. Vercollone did the rest, blasting a shot to the right of Kann.

Richmond nearly added their third in the 39th minute. Jason Yeisley centered the ball to Delicâte near the penalty spot. Delicâte turned past Duckett into space, and his left-footed effort drew a highlight reel save from Kann at full extension to his left.

Richmond picked up where it left off with two early chances to start the second half. In the 50th minute, Davis IV’s ball from the right wing found Delicâte just inside the six-yard box. Delicâte’s right-footed volley met the hand of Kann before trickling to the back post. The ball sat on the goal line as Delicâte, and two Charlotte defenders scrambled for the ball before it could be cleared away.

Two minutes later, a Sascha Görres cross from the left flank found the head of William Yomby at the back post but his header was aimed straight at the goalkeeper and saved.

Charlotte cut the deficit in half in the 53rd minute on a goal by Herrera. Fred Seykere’s through-ball from the middle of the attacking half found Herrera making a diagonal run from the right flank. Herrera took one touch before slotting the ball home past Taylor.

Richmond thought it had its third in the 60th minute when Shay Spitz’s diving header found the back of the net. Spitz found himself behind the defense on a Nate Robinson free kick, but was called offside. The Kickers then experienced a scare five minutes on a near own-goal from William Yomby. Herrera found Jon Leathers through the defense who centered the ball in the box. Yomby was first to the ball, but his left food sent the ball in the direction of the goal before Taylor recovered.

Charlotte had their final chance at an equalizer in the 90th minute. Second-half substitute Drew Russell, found an open Tyrone Hall down the right flank. Hall tried to catch Taylor off his line, but his shot dipped just over the bar.

The Kickers return to City Stadium on Saturday night to host the Dayton Dutch Lions and Family Fest, presented by Union First Market Bank and Bounce 2 The Moon. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. ET and admission for the entire family is just $10 before 6:30 p.m. Order tickets in advance at RichmondKickers.com.

USL PRO Game Report

Saturday, August 9, 2014

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- An early goal from Adam Jahn and help from an own goal proved enough as Sacramento Republic FC held off a late surge from OKC Energy FC to take a 2-1 victory in front of a sellout crowd at Bonney Field on Saturday night. The victory extended Republic FC's undefeated home streak to nine games as they remained in third place in the USL PRO standings.

Republic FC tallied the first goal of the match in the 16th minute on a free kick from 25 yards out. Midfielder Max Alvarez sent an in-swinging free kick into the penalty area from the right, and Jahn ducked down and sent a glancing header through the defense and past Energy FC goalkeeper Samir Badr into the left corner of the net.

Republic FC wasted no time in doubling its lead as it scored two minutes later when defender Chad Bartlomé took a pair of touches down the endline and sent a ball across the face of goal. The ball was deflected toward goal by an onrushing Jahn. Energy FC defender Cyprian Hedrick tried to clear the ball, but ended up inadvertently sending the ball into back of the net for an own goal and a 2-0 lead for Republic FC, which it would carry into halftime.

Sacramento had opportunities to add to its lead at the start the second half, but Energy FC would show signs of life in the 74th minute. Midfielder Michael Thomas found a streaking Kyle Greig with a lofted through-ball, and Energy FC's leading scorer found open space behind the defense and went one-on-one with Republic FC keeper Jake Gleeson. Grieg took a couple of touches before sliding the ball past Gleeson and into the back of the net to cut Republic FC’s lead in half.

Oklahoma City continued to push for an equalizer in the final minutes, but Republic FC was able to close out its seventh home win of the season.

“For most of the game I thought we dominated,” said Republic FC Head Coach Preki. “Sometimes the ball doesn’t bounce our way but I thought it could have easily been three or four for us. But that’s football. We are really happy with the three points and I’m proud of our guys.”

Republic FC will travel to Orange County to take on Blues FC in the fourth matchup of the season between the two teams on Sunday, August 17 at Anteater Stadium.  Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. PT.  The match will be streamed live at SacRepublicFC.com/matchday and updates will be provided via Twitter @SacRepublicFC and using #OCBvSRFC.

Blues Snap Streak, Down Rhinos

USL PRO Game Report

Sunday, August 10, 2014

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Orange County Blues FC snapped a six-match losing streak with a 1-0 victory against the Rochester Rhinos at Sahlen's Stadium on Sunday night. Allan Russell scored his team-leading seventh goal from the penalty spot in the 41st minute for the only goal, while Aaron Perez made three saves for his first clean sheet of the 2014 season.

Orange County had the first chance of the match in the 12th minute when left back Josh Suggs sprung left winger Thomas Garner with a through-ball down the left flank. Garner dribbled the ball to the end line before serving a cross that went all the way through the Rochester penalty area. Alex Martinez picked up the ball on the right flank, dribbled to the end line and then served a ball that traced the Rhinos' goal line before Rochester right back Pat McMahon cleared the ball away to end the threat.

Ten minutes later Martinez created another chance from the right flank for the visiting Blues. This time he served an early ball in from his position at the top right corner of the Rhinos penalty area. Martinez bent his service into Garner's run to the near post, but Garner could not direct an effort on goal. The service ultimately ran through the box and over the goal line for a Rhinos goal kick.

Rochester had its first opportunity in the 34th minute. Rhinos center back Patrick Slogic played a long ball over the top of the Blues back four that Colin Rolfe was able to run on to. Rolfe was pulled down from behind by Orange County center back Fabrice Gautrat 28 yards out from goal. Rochester's Tony Walls took the free kick and put his effort on target, but Perez dove to his right to keep the ball out. Rhinos midfielder Alec Sundly was first to the ball and directed the rebound on frame, but Perez got back to his feet to bat the ball away.

Former Rochester Rhinos striker Andrew Hoxie helped Orange County Blues FC open the scoring in the 40th minute. Hoxie took possession at the top-right corner of the Rhinos penalty area, cut inside past Rochester left back Onua Thomas Obasi, and dribbled across the penalty area until he met the challenge of Rochester center back Babacar Diallo. Diallo's tackle knocked the ball away but Hoxie hit the ground at the top of the box. Murphy got a look at the foul and immediately pointed to the penalty spot.

Russell stepped up to the spot, and drove his shot just inside the left post. Rochester rookie goalkeeper John McCarthy read Russell and dove the correct way, but the quality of Russell's shot was too good and the visitors scored the only goal of the match.

The Rhinos had a chance to equalize in first-half stoppage time. Rochester midfielder Johnny Mendoza struck a corner kick from the right corner, and Slogic and Diallo both had chances to get their head on the service, but they could not put an effort on goal. The corner kick eventually fell to the feet of Walls, who hit a volley with his right foot from eight yards out on the far post, but his shot went directly into the legs of Perez.

Rhinos head coach Bob Lilley rang in the changes at halftime as he brought on leading scorer JC Banks, who has been limited over the past two matches while recovering his fitness after a concussion, and Samuel Petrone replaced Mendoza and Sundly in midfield.

Luck almost gifted the Rhinos a goal in the 49th minute as Banks took an inswinging corner kick from the left. His delivery touched no-one, but ran through the Blues six-yard area until it bounced off the far post and into the arms of Perez.

Hoxie created another chance for the visitors in the 61st minute as he went up for a long ball with Slogic 10 yards inside Rochester's half. Hoxie was able to bring the ball down under the pressure of Slogic, turn, and run at the Rhinos back four. Hoxie dribbled right at Diallo before knocking a through-ball for Martinez at the top of the Rochester penalty area. Martinez took a touch before driving a shot on goal that McCarthy had to dive to his right to parry away. Orange County recycled the rebound to Martinez at the top of the box, but this time McCarthy dove to his right and held the ball to make the save.

Two minutes later the Rhinos had a chance when right back Pat McMahon made an overlapping run down the right flank, dribbled to the endline, and then played a service into the Blues penalty area. McMahon's cross found Petrone six yards out at the far post, but Petrone could not get enough on his finishing attempt to beat Perez.

Rochester had another chance in the 74th minute. Mike Garzi centered the ball from the right flank across the top of the Orange County penalty area. Levi Houapeu made the first run, but dummied Garzi's cross through his legs for the trailing run of Banks at the top of the area. Blues right back Stephen Okai ran through the back of Banks before he could control, and conceded a free kick 23 yards out. After Obasi made a decoy run over the ball on the free kick, Banks got his shot over the wall but couldn't get it back down on goal.

Banks had another chance from a free kick in the 81st minute. This time Garzi picked up a loose ball near the top of the penalty area and was fouled by Dersu Abolfathi 24 yards out in a central position. Banks stepped up to take the free kick again, but the result was the same. The chance would be the last quality chance on goal for either team.

The three points jumped the Orange County Blues into the eighth and final playoff spot in the USL PRO table with 27 points from 23 matches. The Rhinos remained in sixth place with 31 points from 23 matches, but the pressure will increase on Rochester, which needs to get results in its final five matches to ensure their participation in the postseason.

Rochester's next home match will be on Saturday, August 23rd at 7:05 p.m. against the Harrisburg City Islanders. Harrisburg City Islanders News Release -- www.cityislanders.com

Monday, August 11, 2014

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Harrisburg City Islanders will face off against MLS affiliate partner the Philadelphia Union in an exhibition match on Thursday, August 28th at 7 p.m. ET. This will be the seventh time that these two teams have faced each other since they became official partners in March 2010, including four friendlies and two Open Cup matches.

The partnership between the Philadelphia Union and the Harrisburg City Islanders continues to grow at a rapid pace, allowing players to perfect their skill-set while acquiring an increased amount of playing time at the professional level. Pedro Ribeiro, on loan from the Union, tallied his first two professional goals for the City Islanders against the OKC Energy FC on July 23rd, and added another pair of goals in a 3-1 victory against the New York Red Bulls Reserves last week.

In addition to his standout performance with the City Islanders, Ribeiro showcased his versatility during his home debut for the Union when Philadelphia faced off against English Premier League side Crystal Palace FC in an international friendly on July 25th at PPL Park.

The most recent match-up between the Union and City Islanders came in the fourth round of the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at PPL Park.  The Union defeated the City Islanders 3-1 after extra time to advance, and are set to compete in this week's semifinals as they visit FC Dallas on Tuesday night.

Union players on loan to the City Islanders such as Ribeiro, Richie Marquez, Cristhian Hernandez, Jimmy McLaughlin and current Union starting right back Sheanon Williams exemplify how this partnership embodies success.

Tickets for the friendly are available by visiting www.cityislanders.com. Harrisburg's next USL PRO contest is this Saturday as the City Islanders visit Orlando City SC at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff.

The United States and Canada U20 Women’s National Teams will both try to book their places in the quarterfinals of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup on Tuesday. The United States is guaranteed a place in the knockout stage with victory against China, while Canada will also be in solid position to advance should it defeat North Korea.

The United States left it late to keep its pursuit of the quarterfinals alive against Brazil last Friday night, but a goal by former Colorado Rush standout Lindsay Horan earned a 1-0 victory that moved the side into second place in the group standings. A 2011 All-League selection, Horan put away a chance created by Summer Green to earn all three points and move the U.S. ahead of China in the group standings.

“Our team got the ball wide, Summer got to [the] end line, dribbled around the girl, and played me a perfect ball,” Horan said. “Credit to her, I thought that was outstanding. She really changed the game for me.”

China claimed a second consecutive draw to open the tournament in a dramatic 5-5 game against Germany. Jiahui Lei scored with 10 minutes to go to earn a point for China, which had led 4-3 just past the hour mark on Beiyan Zhu’s second goal of the game, only for Germany to rally to take the lead before Lei’s equalizer. China would also advance with victory, which should set up an exciting clash at Moncton Stadium.

Canada could win its group should it take victory against North Korea at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium, but will need to avoid another slow start against a side that has won both of its games so far in the group stage. The hosts had to overcome a two-goal deficit against Finland in their second group game, as goals by the Colorado Rush’s Janine Beckie, Laval Comets’ Valerie Sanderson and Toronto Lady Lynx’s Nichelle Prince earned a 3-2 victory.

Prince in particular stood out as she provided the assists on each of the first two goals before bagging the game-winner with five minutes to go.

“It felt amazing,” Prince said. “After the first half we came into the locker room and we just talked about how we could come back, that it wasn’t over yet, and after Janine got her first goal we just knew a lot more was coming. I think we were very confident, we knew we had that game.”

Canada could overtake North Korea should it take a two-goal victory on Tuesday night, but the group could finish in a three-way tie should Ghana bounce back from its defeat to North Korea against Finland. Canada opens the final game of group play with a two-goal advantage in goal difference on the Ghanaians, however, meaning any Canadian victory would require Ghana to take at least a three-goal victory against Finland.

The United States kicks off against China at 4 p.m. ET in a game that can be seen on ESPN3. Canada, meanwhile, kicks off against North Korea at 7 p.m. ET. For more on the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, visit www.fifa.com/U20WomensWorldCup.

USL PRO News Release

Tuesday, August 12, 2014

TAMPA, Fla. – USL PRO named its Team of the Week for Week 21 of the 2014 season on Tuesday as Harrisburg City Islanders forward Pedro Ribeiro was named Player of the Week. Ribeiro had a pair of goals as the City Islanders took victory against the New York Red Bulls Reserves, and also put in a strong performance in Harrisburg’s victory against Orlando City to help his side move into fifth place in the USL PRO standings.

Ribeiro opened the scoring just past the half-hour mark against the Red Bulls Reserves with an outstanding turning finish from the right side of the penalty area into the left corner of the net. The Philadelphia Union loanee added to Harrisburg’s lead seven minutes into the second half for his fourth goal of the season. The Brazilian forward also played an important role in Saturday’s win against Orlando, as he held up play and linked well with the rest of the City Islanders’ attack in a 3-2 victory against the Lions.

Another pair of City Islanders were selected to the Team of the Week, as midfielders Robbie Derschang and Yann Ekra both earned places. Derschang scored twice in Harrisburg’s victory against Orlando, including an outstanding free kick to open the scoring, while Ekra was superb at both ends of the field against both the Red Bulls Reserves and Lions.

Orange County’s Allan Russell joined Ekra and Derschang in the Team of the Week midfield after he helped the Blues snap a six-game losing streak with a strong midfield performance that was capped by the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win against Rochester on Sunday. The LA Galaxy II’s Andre Auras completed the quartet as his excellent free kick proved to be the game-winning goal in Los Dos’ 3-2 win against Arizona United SC.

Auras’ Galaxy II teammate Charlie Rugg was also selected after he had a goal and an assist in the win against Arizona, while Dayton’s Karamba Janneh completed the attacking trio as his stoppage-time penalty earned the Dutch Lions a 2-1 victory in Wilmington.

Dutch Lions defender Brock Granger also earned selection to the Team of the Week as he scored and was solid defensively in a 2-2 draw with Charleston Friday night. He was joined in the back by Sacramento’s Nemanja Vukovic, who featured as Republic FC limited Oklahoma City to only six shots, and Richmond’s Sascha Görres, who was solid defensively and a threat down the flank as the Kickers defeated Charlotte. The side is completed by Pittsburgh goalkeeper Michael Lisch, who had a four-save shutout to lead the Riverhounds to a 1-0 victory against Orange County, which included an outstanding last-minute save to preserve all three points for the ‘Hounds.

The USL PRO season continues on Wednesday night as the Charleston Battery welcome Orange County Blues FC to Blackbaud Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff to begin five consecutive days of USL PRO action. Thursday night sees OKC Energy FC host Arizona United SC at Pribil Stadium at 8 p.m. ET, while the weekend’s schedule includes eight contests that will continue to shape the USL PRO Playoff race.

The United States and Canada U20 Women’s National Teams both advanced to the quarterfinals of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup on Tuesday night, as each took victory in their final group games to move into the knockout stage. A pair of former Colorado Rush standouts led the way as Lindsey Horan scored twice to lead the U.S. to a 3-0 victory against China and Janine Beckie had the only goal in Canada’s 1-0 win against North Korea.

The United States entered its contest with China knowing victory would send it into the knockout stage, and came out of the gates flying as former Atlanta Silverback Savannah Jordan had an effort cleared off the line. The U.S. took the lead in the 19th minute as Horan bagged her first, driving home a shot off the underside of the crossbar and just over the line after a good cut-back from the LA Blues’ Makenzy Doniak.

“We wanted a goal early,” said Horan. “We wanted to impose our attacking style and get that back. In the Brazil game, it was a little more frantic. It was a little bit more iffy here and there. In this game we were patient, we were confident on the ball, the speed of play was great. We were switching it and I thought we did really well with keeping the ball.”

Horan, a W-League All-League selection in 2011, doubled the advantage in the 38th minute when she was first to react to a corner from Dayton Dutch Lions midfielder Rose Lavelle in the penalty area that China failed to clear, and stabbed home a finish into the right corner of the net.

Lavelle, an All-Southeastern Conference selection this summer for the Dutch Lions, completed the scoring four minutes into the second half. Continuing an impressive tournament so far, Lavelle combined with Horan for a perfectly executed counter-attack that saw her regain possession 15 yards out, cut onto her right foot and drive a low finish into the left corner, sealing victory for former Seattle Sounders Women coach Michelle French’s side.

Canada’s situation was more precarious than the United States’ entering its final game later in the day, with Ghana also a threat to advance should the hosts slip up against a side that had won each of its opening two games.

After an even opening half that saw both sides create chances, Canada took the lead in the 65th minute shortly after the introduction of the Laval Comets’ Amandine Pierre-Louis. She found the Toronto Lady Lynx’s Nichelle Prince on the right side, and her cross to the back post was put away by Beckie for her second goal of the tournament.

“I was at about half-field, and the ball was working its way down the field, and I said, ‘I gotta get myself in there,’ so I got the wheels on and Nichelle sent in a wonderful ball, and I was able to finish it,” Beckie said.

The 1-0 victory proved enough to send Canada through, as it finished ahead of Ghana on goal difference after the African side took a 2-1 victory against Finland in the group’s other contest.

Both the United States and Canada finished second in their respective groups, with the U.S. set to face North Korea in Toronto at BMO Field on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. ET. Canada will head to Edmonton to take on Germany at Commonwealth Stadium at 8 p.m. ET, also on Saturday, with both games set to be aired on ESPN3.

USL PRO Game Report

Wednesday, August 13, 2014

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Jose Cuevas had a goal and two assists to lead the Charleston Battery to a 3-2 victory against Orange County Blues FC on Wednesday night in front of a crowd of 2,988 at Blackbaud Stadium. Dane Kelly also had a pair of goals for the Battery, who moved past the Blued into the eighth and final playoff place in the USL PRO standings.

“You’re always nervous after what happened [last Friday night in a late draw with Dayton] and the guys were thinking about it a little bit,” said Battery head coach Mike Anhaeuser. “We didn’t want to sit back. We wanted to score goals but defend the lead. We did that tonight and got the three points.”

Kelly opened the scoring for Charleston in the 17th minute. The play began when midfielder Jarad van Schaik sent a cross into the penalty area and Cuevas used his head to flick the ball on to Kelly. The Jamaican forward used his right foot to poke the ball past Orange County goalkeeper Aaron Perez to put the Battery up 1-0.

Kelly contributed to the second goal of the game when he took a shot from just outside the penalty area that resulted in a handball by Orange County defender Josh Suggs. Cuevas stepped up to take the penalty kick and calmly buried his shot into the left side of the net to make the game 2-0 in the 35th minute.

Orange County cut into Charleston's lead in the closing minutes of the first half. A ball played from the Orange County back line caught the Charleston defende off guard and midfielder Alex Martinez chased the ball down. Charleston goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper charged out to challenge, but was easily rounded by Martinez, who calmly put the ball into the open goal to make the score 2-1 at the break.

Kelly and Cuevas connected again 20 minutes into the second half to restore Charleston's two-goal advantage. The Battery were awarded a free kick just outside of the penalty area on the left, and Cuevas played a ball that looked like it might go in, but Kelly took no chances and headed the ball in from five yards out to make the score 3-1.

Cuevas’ two assists were his first since joining the Battery on July 15 and his goal was his second of the year, both penalty kicks. Kelly’s two goals gave him five goals in the last five games.

“If Dane and I are scoring, then we are doing something right,” said Cuevas. “He’s grown as a player and I feel like we have a good connection that we can take into the playoffs.”

The Blues would not go down easily, and grabbed a second goal in the 75th minute. Substitutes Eli Garner and Seung Ju Kim were able to produce the goal as Garner found a cutting Kim behind the Charleston back line. Kim beat Cooper with a fine finish for his first professionial goal to cut Charleston's lead to one.

The Battery were able to defuse any threats after they allowed the second goal, however, and held on for a 3-2 win. The victory moved Charleston onto 29 points with a record of 7-8-8, two points ahead of the Blues in ninth place.

Charleston wraps up a three-match home stand on Friday night against the Rochester Rhinos at Blackbaud Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Dayton Dutch Lions FC News Release -- www.ddlfc.com

Friday, August 15, 2014

DAYTON, Ohio -- Dayton Dutch Lions FC is excited to announce the signing of midfielder Christian Camacho and striker Keith Detelj for the remainder of the 2014 USL PRO season. Both were requests of newly appointed coach Matt Weston to increase positional depth on the Dutch Lions' squad as they face the final stretch of game this season.

Both players bring experience from the PDL, and also have competed for European clubs. Camacho played at the professional level for Olimpia Balti FC and Sfintul Gheorghe in the Moldovan First Division. He also played for the Westchester Flames and the Long Island Rough Riders in the PDL.

Detelj was a four year starter at NCAA Division I school Marist College and also played for the Fort Wayne Fever, Westchester Flames and Long Island Rough Riders. This past season, Detelj had five goals and four assists in 14 appearances for the Rough Riders as they just missed out on a place in the PDL Playoffs.

Weston is anticipating an immediate positive impact from the signings.

“I'm excited to have landed the signatures of Detalj and Camacho," he said. "After reviewing the squad I felt the need to add pace up top, which Detalj has in abundance, and the technical quality which Camacho has is going to be an asset to the [midfield]. They look hungry for this opportunity and add much needed depth to the Dayton Dutch Lions FC squad."

Camacho and Detelj will be available to make their debut in this Saturday’s match against the second-placed Richmond Kickers in what should be a good test for the Dutch Lions, as they come off a draw and a victory in their first two games with Weston at the helm.
