USL PRO Game Report

Saturday, April 5, 2014

IRVINE, Calif. -- OKC Energy FC took victory in its inaugural contest in USL PRO as it defeated the Orange County Blues FC 2-0 on Saturday night at Anteater Stadium. Kyle Greig scored the first goal in Energy history, while Nate Shiffman added a second before the halftime break as the expansion franchise handed the Blues their second loss of the season.

http://usl2.uslsoccer.com/imgs/OrangeCounty-OKC20405.jpgThe fans on hand witnessed Oklahoma City’s dream start to life in USL PRO after just 11 minutes. Christian Duke split open the center backs with a delightful through-ball for Greig, and the former Wilmington forward slotted the ball past Blues goalkeeper Patrick McLain to cement his place in Oklahoma City folklore.

The Energy doubled their lead in the 28th minute when Peabo Doue headed a long ball down for Shiffman to slam home OKC’s second goal. The Blues looked for a response as Stephen Okai tried his luck from distance, but Mark Howard flung his body in front of the ball, preserving the Energy's two-goal lead at the halftime break.

Blues Head coach Dariush Yazdani rang in the changes at halftime. Chris Cortez, Allan Russell and Gibson Bardsley put a spring in the Blues step but they were unable to break down a very compact Energy defense. Schillo Tshuma also looked very dangerous down the flank for the Blues, but the center back pairing of Gareth Evans and Mark Howard (and later Tarek Morad) repelled everything thrown their way.

Despite the loss, the Blues have promised that they will find their flow in a week’s time when they take on Sacramento Republic FC.

“We appreciate the fans support,” said Cortez. "Playing in Irvine is just a ten minute drive for my friends and family”

The Blues will look to tighten their back line and bring a more fluid style in the battle between Northern and Southern California next Saturday night. The Energy, meanwhile, will complete their west-coast trip on Monday night as they visit the LA Galaxy II at 7:30 p.m. PT at the StubHub Center Track and Field Stadium.

Sacramento Republic FC News Release -- www.sacrepublicfc.com

Sunday, April 6, 2014

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento Republic FC will head back down to Carson, Calif. and the StubHub Center Track Stadium on Monday morning to take on the Chivas USA Reserves. The match starts at 11 a.m. PT and will be Republic FC’s second league match.

Republic FC comes into the match after drawing 1-1 versus the LA Galaxy II in their inaugural match. Republic FC forward Justin Braun scored the first goal in team history in the 33rd minute on a header. LA Galaxy II leveled the game late on a Chandler Hoffman goal.

Republic FC goalie, and Portland Timbers loanee, Jake Gleeson led USL PRO with five saves last week and entered the week second in the league in overall saves. Gleeson was called up to the Timbers for their match versus the Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday, but is expected to rejoin Republic FC for the match.

Gleeson, Braun and defender Harrison Delbridge were all named to the USL PRO Team of the Week. Republic FC led the league with three players named to the Team of the Week.

Republic FC head coach Preki, forward Justin Braun and midfielder Rodrigo Lopez all have ties to Chivas USA. Preki coached Chivas USA from 2006-2009, the last three as head coach. Preki was named MLS Coach of the Year in 2007 after the team went 15-7-8 and earned the No. 1-seed in the Western Conference playoffs.

Braun and Lopez both played for Preki at Chivas USA. Braun was discovered by Preki while playing for a Utah select team and invited to participate in the Chivas USA preseason. Braun appeared in 96 matches for Chivas USA from 2008-2011, 39 of those matches came with Preki as the head coach in 2008 and 2009. Lopez appeared in five matches for Preki in 2007.

Chivas USA Reserves come into the match after dropping their first reserve league match 2-0 to the FC Dallas Reserves on March 23.  Seven Chivas USA players who have seen first team action appeared in the match including Agustin Pelletieri who has started three matches for Chivas USA this season and Adolfo Bautista who has also appeared in three matches recording one assist.

The match will be the second of five straight road matches for Republic FC.  Four of the five will be played in the Los Angeles Area with three of the matches played at the StubHub Center Track Stadium.

USL PRO Game Report

Saturday, April 5, 2014

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Orlando City SC gained its first win of the 2014 USL PRO regular season on Saturday night as the Lions took a 3-1 victory against the Rochester Rhinos. The win against the Rhinos continues the Lions’ unbeaten run against Rochester, as City have never lost to the upstate New York-based club in three years (7-0-1).

“I’m pleased that we won the game and I’m pleased that we scored three goals, but I think that our performance could have been a bit better,” said Head Coach Adrian Heath. “We had a bit of break when we needed it tonight, unlike last week.”

After only coming away with two 1-1 draws in their opening matches against Charleston and Pittsburgh, Heath mentioned that City needed to score early to open the game up and prevent opposing teams from bunkering in.

On Saturday night, he got his wish when attacking midfielder Kevin Molino put the Lions up 1-0 in the third minute. The Trinidadian international began the match in cracking form and was active in the final third, creating chances for not only himself but also for his fellow attacking players. Molino missed an early strike from inside the area in the first minute, but would make up for it two minutes later with a comfortable finish from a Tyler Turner cross.

With the early goal secured, the Lions looked more relaxed and began playing well. The three attacking midfielders, Austin da Luz, Molino and Darwin Ceren were popping in and out of the free space in Rochester’s defensive third, and the holding midfielders, Aodhan Quinn and Yordany Alvarez, continuously made themselves available when the front three ran into trouble.

Meanwhile the backline looked equally impressive, as Orlando were fervent in their efforts to press the Rhinos high up the pitch and force them to clear it away. However, despite not maintaining much possession, Rochester nearly equalized when midfielder Minh Vu came close to capitalizing on a defensive error from Orlando. Luckily for the Lions, Vu tapped his strike just wide of the target.

Vu’s chance was the only clear-cut opportunity for the visitors in the opening half. Orlando, on the other hand, managed to create several in the first period. With da Luz and Molino drifting further inside, defenders Luke Boden and Tyler Turner found more space on the wings and were able to drive low crosses to the near-post.

After coming close to scoring on several occasions, including a chance from Corey Hertzog that ricocheted off the post, Rob Valentino scored the second goal of the game for Orlando. Valentino scored six goals for the Lions in 2013 and added another to his career while wearing purple and white by calmly re-directing a well-placed cross from Alvarez.

With the momentum in its favor, Orlando came close to scoring a minute later when Hertzog had a one-on-one with Rhinos goalkeeper Luis Soffner, but the former Whitecaps striker hit his final strike directly at the ‘keeper.

Orlando looked even more confident to begin the second half, but an early mistake from Quinn gave the visitors a bit of life. Quinn attempted to play a back pass to Brad Rusin but, instead, ending up splitting the two center-halves, and Rochester midfielder JC Banks was able to run on to it and place it past Gallardo.

Two of three goals allowed by Orlando this year have come from their own mistakes, and City’s confident play became a bit more cautious. But in the 72nd minute, Heath made a tactical change and brought on attacking players Adama Mbengue and Dennis Chin. Within minutes, Heath’s substitution would yield dividends when Chin scored a tap-in from six yards out in the 76th minute. The goal marked the first in 2014 for the Lions’ all-time leading scorer.

The remaining 14 minutes featured solid possession from City as they didn’t allow Rochester to take advantage of any mistakes.

Next week, Orlando will host the Charleston Battery on Saturday, April 12, before venturing on a two-game road trip against F.C. Dallas and OKC Energy. The Rhinos, meanwhile, will visit the Dayton Dutch Lions on Friday night as they look to bounce back in their second game of the season.

USL PRO Game Report

Saturday, April 5, 2014

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Kickers claimed a 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Saturday night at City Stadium. Forward Michael Seaton opened scoring in the first half with midfielder Kyle Porter notching a pair of goals on either side of a Collins John tally as the Kickers earned all three points in their 2014 home opener.

Photo courtesy Pattie AndersonThe Kickers jumped out to an early lead when defender Luke Vercollone carried the ball into the penalty area before being stifled by a Pittsburgh defender. Collin Martin picked up the weak clearance and slotted it through traffic, only to once again be denied by a deflection. However, an unmarked Seaton rounded the back line at the left post and buried the rebound into the far right corner in the 19th minute.

The advantage was nearly short-lived; however, as the Riverhounds squandered the chance to level the score minutes later when midfielder Matt Dallman lined up a free kick inches from the box but stood idly by as his shot sailed just wide.

Soon after, the Kickers almost capitalized in the 24th minute when George Davis IV was awarded a free kick at midfield. Martin beat his mark and played a leading ball through to Porter, but his close range strike was swept away for a corner.

Picking up where they left off after the break, the Kickers doubled their lead in the 57th minute when Samuel Asante played a long ball over the defense, meeting Porter at the top of the penalty area. As Riverhounds goalkeeper Gregg Blum charged off his line to challenge, the D.C. United loanee calmly slotted the ball into the far corner.

Porter was back in action four minutes later as he streaked down the right flank, but he could not elude Blum a second time as the Riverhounds goalkeeper leapt to smother the ball.  Then, on a quick counter attack in the 69th minute, Seaton received the ball on the left flank and played it back to Porter at the top of the box but his shot soared skyward.

With 15 minutes remaining in regulation, the Riverhounds pressed to pull a goal back with a series of dangerous shots that eventually found the target in the 82nd minute.  Former Kickers midfielder Joseph Ngwenya picked up the ball on the left edge of the box, 20 yards out. Heavily marked as he approached the penalty area, he served a cross through the box, connecting with John at the far post, who made no mistake inside the right corner.

With the equalizer in sight, the Riverhounds were awarded consecutive corner kicks in the 90th minute but Dallman’s whipped inswingers, turned point-blank headers, dipped just over the bar.

Then, in his debut at City Stadium, Ryan Taylor was tested late in the game when John received the ball at the end line and played it back to Dallman but the Kickers keeper stretched to make the save.

Despite the Riverhounds’ last-ditch effort to level the score, the Kickers claimed the full three points when second half substitute Christiano Francois evaded defenders and played Porter through to the top of the penalty area. Held at the 18, the crafty midfielder tucked the ball inside the far post for his second tally of the night.

The Richmond Kickers travel to the Charlotte Eagles next Saturday before returning to City Stadium on Saturday, April 19 to host the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at 5 p.m.  Order tickets in advance at RichmondKickers.com.

USL PRO Game Report

Monday, April 7, 2014

CARSON, Calif. – Sacramento Republic FC claimed its first USL PRO victory in franchise history as it took a 3-1 victory against Chivas USA Reserves in an Interleague game held on Monday afternoon at the StubHub Center’s Track & Field Stadium. Sacramento scored first when Mike Fucito gave Republic FC the initial lead in the 12th minute. The Goats responded with the equalizer by striker Luke Moore in the 24th minute, but the Northern California side managed to add a pair of scores by Justin Braun and Thomas Stewart to take victory, and remain undefeated.

Both clubs came out looking to establish the upper hand in their attacking third and go at goal. Republic FC got on the scoresheet first when a cross from the right edge of the penalty was bobbled by Chivas goalkeeper Tim Melia, which allowed Fucito to clean up the loose ball with a tap-in from just outside the six-yard area.

The Goats evened the score in the 24th minute when forward Matthew Fondy set up midfielder Leandro Barrera on the left seam to play a cross into the short area, where Moore connected with a header to log his first goal with the Red-and-White.

Just a minute later, however, the Northern California side reclaimed the lead when Fucito sent a cross near the goal line on the left side of the penalty area to find Braun at the back post for the go-ahead tally.

Moore continued to get into range and got off a clean strike from outside the box in the 38th minute, but the long-range attempt sailed over the crossbar. Sacramento also had chances to add to its lead, only for Fucito to be denied by Melia from 15 yards out and other opportunities to go awry.

Playing a goal down midway through the second half, Chivas continued to get their attackers forward in search of the equalizer, which nearly came in the 74th minute.  Forward Caleb Calvert – who entered the contest as a sub in the final stages of the first half – saw Republic FC keeper Jake Gleeson off his line and headed the ball over him. The attempt was on target but, Republic FC defender Emrah Kilmenta was able to recover and clear the ball to safety.

Republic FC went on to add to their lead with a stoppage-time goal through Stewart, who lifted a finish from 25 yards out over Melia and just under the crossbar to secure the 3-1 road win to cap the in-state contest.

Republic FC returns to Southern California next weekend as it visits the Orange County Blues on Saturday night at 7 p.m. PT>

USL PRO Game Report

Monday, April 7, 2014

CARSON, Calif. – The LA Galaxy II (2-0-1) picked up the second victory of their inaugural USL PRO campaign and remained undefeated after three games with a 4-2 victory against OKC Energy FC (1-1-0) on Monday night at the StubHub Center Track and Field Stadium.

After falling behind early on a goal by Oklahoma City’s Peabo Doue in the eighth minute, Galaxy II scored three times in the first half as Laurent Courtois, Chandler Hoffman and Daniel Steres found the back of the net for LA. Energy FC tried to rally in the second half as substitute Pete Caringi tallied early on, but the equalizer eluded Oklahoma City and Aleksandar Dokovic sealed the deal for the Galaxy II with a stoppage-time goal.

The match started poorly for Curt Onalfo’s side as a defensive miscue by Los Dos right back Oscar Sorto resulted in a goal from Doue, who slid home a finish at the far post off a cross by Kyle Greig. The lead lasted just five minutes, however, as a free kick by Courtois from well outside the penalty area sailed through the Oklahoma City defense and into the net for the French player-coach’s first goal for the USL PRO side.

LA took the lead in the 35th minute when a Jack McBean cross looped into the penalty area and found a leaping Hoffman, who headed home past a helpless Jon Kempin. Los Dos found the eventual winner four minutes later when French defensive midfielder Andre Auras, who enjoyed a stellar debut, found defender Steres for the center back’s second goal of the campaign from a corner kick on the right.

The Galaxy almost grabbed a fourth goal before halftime as McBean took advantage of a defensive error, but the forward fired his shot well over the net when one-on-one with the keeper.

Oklahoma City needed just 14 minutes in the second stanza to cut LA’s lead in half as Caringi smashed a cross by Adda Djeziri past goalkeeper Brian Rowe. Energized by their goal, Energy FC dominated possession in the second half as they placed Onalfo’s side on the back foot. The pressure only intensified in the closing moments, but the Galaxy held firm as the defense made a number of last-ditch stops that included a timely block by center back Kofi Opare on an Energy FC shot from inside the penalty area.

The pressure from the visitors led the opportunity to counter-attack into space for the Galaxy II, which was exploited in stoppage time when Raul Mendiola launched a pinpoint through ball to a waiting Dokovic on the right side of the penalty area. Dokovic slotted home an easy finish from close range to seal the three points.

Los Dos return to action next week when they play the fourth match of their five-game homestand against Sacramento Republic FC on Sunday at the StubHub Center Track and Field Stadium. Energy FC, meanwhile, will return to the west coast next weekend as they visit Arizona United SC on Saturday night looking to bounce back from their first loss of the young season.

Antúnez returned to North America twice, the first time in 2011 when he made two league appearances for Liga MX club the Estudiantes Tecos. The second time was in 2013 when he made three league appearances for his hometown club Chivas USA.

“Daniel brings a great deal of experience. He is a calm, composed soccer player, who reads the game very well,” Arizona United SC head coach Michael James Dellorusso said.

Antúnez attended junior college at Lon Morris College from 2004-05 before he transferred to the University of Hartford for the remainder of his collegiate career from 2006-07. Antúnez was originally selected in the third round of the 2008 MLS Supplemental Draft by the Colorado Rapids.

Hailing from Bridgewater Township, N.J., Kassel joins Arizona United SC after making five appearances for the Philadelphia Union in 2013. USL PRO News Release

Tuesday, April 8, 2014

TAMPA, Fla. – USL PRO named its Team of the Week for Week 3 of the 2014 season on Tuesday with OKC Energy FC’s Kyle Greig being named Player of the Week as he scored the first goal in club history to lead his side to a 2-0 win against Orange County Blues FC.

Greig, a former member of the Wilmington Hammerheads, opened the scoring for the Energy in the 12th minute against the Blues as he beat the offside trap and then coolly shot low into the right corner of the net from the top of the penalty area. He was joined on the Team of the Week by teammate Tarek Morad, who had a strong first professional game at center back as OKC held firm under pressure in the second half.

A pair of strikers from the Richmond Kickers joined Greig in the Team of the Week attack as D.C. United loanees Kyle Porter and Michael Seaton both claimed berths. Porter had a pair of goals, including the game-winner, and Seaton tallied his first goal of the season in a 3-1 win against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

Orlando also claimed its first win of the season behind a goal and an assist by former league MVP Kevin Molino, who was joined on the Team of the Week by defender Rob Valentino, who notched what proved to be the winning goal for the Lions.

Harrisburg’s Jason Pelletier and Wilmington’s Paul Nicholson both earned midfield berths as they were influential in the draw between the two sides on Saturday night, and Charlotte’s Bilal Duckett rounded out the defensive group as he put in a strong debut in a losing effort for the Eagles.

Jersey Express News Release -- www.jerseyexpresssoccer.org

Wednesday, April 9, 2014

NEWARK, N.J. -- Bill Gaudette got his first taste of coaching more than a decade ago when he was in college, playing goalkeeper for St. John's University.

"It gives me a different aspect of the game and I like to give back a little bit and help out some of these young kids," Gaudette said. "I've been fortunate enough to play for almost 10 years so I have a lot of experience and it's nice to give back."

Gaudette's playing career recently came to an end due to back and hip injuries, but his passion for the game and teaching remain as strong as ever. This spring, Gaudette will continue with his coaching career as the new Goalkeepers Coach for the Jersey Express. Gaudette will be coaching alongside his former St. John's teammate and current Express head coach Jeff Matteo.

"Jeff and I have stayed in contact. We were able to communicate when we played in MLS and stay in touch," Gaudette said. "We've always stayed in touch and as soon as he knew I was settling down and thinking about not playing anymore, he reached out to me pretty quickly."

"I've known Billy for 15 years and had the privilege to play with him at St. John's," said Matteo. "Billy brings a higher level of experience and a training intensity that these goalkeepers haven't seen. His training sessions are well organized and demanding which will only enhance our environment for these players this summer. We are lucky to have such a seasoned professional on board with our staff."

After St. John's, Gaudette had an eight-year professional career that started with the Columbus Crew (2005-07) of the MLS and included stops with the Los Angeles Galaxy (2012) and New York Red Bulls (2012). He also played in the NASL with clubs in Puerto Rico (2008-10) and Montreal (2011) and also compete for the Puerto Rican national team in 2012. During his playing career he helped out with the local academies as well as the Puerto Rico youth national teams. In addition, Gaudette has helped train numerous local goalkeepers.

Soccer has taken the 32-year-old Pennsylvania native all across North America. But Gaudette, who lives in New York City, is happy to once again be working with soccer in the area he considers home.

"New York's my home. Once I moved here to go to college here at St. John's University, I never really left," Gaudette said. "I always returned in the offseason, my wife's from here. We have a house here and we live here. It's been my home for over 15 years now. This is home. It's great to be a part of soccer in New York again. I've been blessed to play for some of the local teams here and to be back and a part of the youth soccer in the New York area is really special."

Woodberry, 22, joins United after making his professional debut for FC Dallas in 2013, where he logged more than 350 minutes in eight league matches and appeared in 11 Reserve League matches.

“London is an extremely versatile defender,” Arizona United SC head coach Michael Dellorusso said. “He comes from a great organization in FC Dallas, and should make a big impact on our team.”

The former Homegrown player signee played in FC Dallas’ United States Soccer Development Academy before joining the University of Maryland Terrapins in 2009. At Maryland, Woodberry appeared in 77 matches, scored four goals and notched four assists. He earned National Soccer Coaches Association of America Third-Team honors as a senior for the Terrapins in 2012.

“It’s a dream of mine to play professional soccer and I get to continue my dream,” Woodberry said. “I’m just looking forward to getting games under my belt and trying to get wins. It’s not fun to lose. I’m here to win.”

Renken, 20, has been a standout for the U.S. Soccer National Teams since 2005, and has represented the United States at the U-14, U-15, U-17, and U-20 levels. Renken was also a member of the distinguished U.S. Residency Program in Bradenton, Florida for three years from 2007-09. Following the conclusion of his stay in Florida, Renken joined the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency program for a season before he moved over to the German Bundesliga club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in 2010. In Germany, Renken played for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim’s U-19 team and amassed 435 minutes in 10 matches before the Portland Timbers acquired him in January 2012, via the MLS waiver process. In his one season for the Timbers, Renken appeared in all 10 of the Timber’s Reserve League matches, recording two assists.

“I heard the organization is great and so far I’ve experienced what they have with the players and coaches,” Renken said. “I’m looking forward to playing with the team.”

Baladez, 22, joins Arizona after playing for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers during the 2013 season after being loaned by FC Dallas. In 12 league appearances for the Strikers, Baladez notched four goals.

Following the conclusion of his junior year, Baladez was All-Conference and was a National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-South honoree.

“I’m excited,” Baladez said. “It’s a lot different than Dallas obviously being in the desert and it’s hot, but I’m excited to be here and excited to win a championship with Arizona.”

Newton, 26, heads to Arizona after wrapping up a two-year stint for the San Jose Earthquakes, in which he saw action in San Jose’s Reserve League team, appearing in three matches during the 2013 campaign. Collegiately, Newton played at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, where he finished as the program's all-time leader in saves (254) and shutouts (36). He was selected by the Houston Dynamo with the 7th overall selection in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft where he was loaned to FC Tampa Bay, appearing in two matches. Newton was also a member of the distinguished U.S. Residency Program in Bradenton, Florida, for three years from 2003-05. Newton was also named PDL Goalkeeper of the Year in 2007 after allowing only three goals in 14 games for the Hampton Roads Piranhas.

“I’m excited and I’ve heard a lot of good things,” Newton said. “The supporter group is great and the city is cool. We have some experienced guys, and everybody is getting to know each other. I’m excited to get going on Saturday.”

GPS Portland Phoenix Feature -- www.mainepremiersoccer.com

Wednesday, April 9, 2014

PORTLAND, Maine -- As the PDL season draws closer, GPS Portland Phoenix will be featuring former players every week to see where their soccer career has taken them after playing for the Phoenix.

Next up is former Phoenix midfielder Paul Nicholson, who has worked his way through the College and PDL soccer system to the professional ranks. After leaving the Phoenix in 2010, he found his way to USL PRO, and recently signed for his fourth season with the Wilmington Hammerheads.

Q: Can you explain your soccer experience growing up, where you played, & for what team?
A: I started playing soccer when I was around eight years old for my dad’s team, Whitehaven Social. It wasn’t until I was 12 that I got scouted and was asked to play for the only local professional team in my area, Carlisle United FC, I was in their youth system until I was 16 years old and then I moved to Morecambe FC.

Q: Where did you play soccer at College, and what was the highlight of your College career?
A: At 18 I years old I was released by Morecambe and decided to accept a scholarship at The University of Rio Grande, Ohio. The level of soccer played their was fantastic considering the size and location of the school. We made it to the national tournament all four years I played, the highlight of my college career was definitely my senior year when we were able to make it all the way to the National Championship game.

Q: How was your time at Portland Phoenix?
A: My time playing for Portland was brilliant. We had a very talented squad that year and Paul Baber and Ally Bain taught me a lot about the game. We made it to the playoffs but were unfortunate to lose in the first round to Reading United who made it all the way to the final four that year. If it wasn’t for my summer in Portland I seriously doubt I would be playing professional soccer today.

Q: What was the highlight of your time here?
A: I don’t think there was one particular highlight of that season, obviously making it to the playoffs was nice but the whole summer was amazing, Portland is a great city with lots a very nice people, I made a lot of friends that summer and really improved as a soccer player.

Q: Explain your soccer career after playing for the Phoenix?
A: The following summer after playing for Portland I was asked to play for the Wilmington Hammerheads in USL PRO. It was all down to Paul Baber that I even signed for the club, he mentioned my name to the Coach [David] Irving here and even went as far as to negotiate my contract for me because I didn’t have an agent. I have just started my fourth season with the Wilmington Hammerheads and Paul and Ally have helped me every step of the way, it just goes to show the type of people they are to continue to do that for me.

Q: How does it feel to be a pro soccer player?
A: Like most lads growing up my dream was always to became a professional soccer player, there were plenty of times I was positive it wasn’t going to happen for me but with a bit of luck and a lot of people’s help I finally realized my dream. It really is the best job in the world.

Q: How has your time been at Wilmington Hammerheads?
A: Its been a lot of fun, Wilmington is an amazing city and the people here love their soccer and really rally around the team. So far in my career with the Hammerheads the team has made it to one championship game in 2012 and we finished runners-up in the league back in 2011. I hope to keep playing for the club as long as I can and really make Wilmington my home.

Mendiola Drawing Early Praise

USL PRO Feature

Wednesday, April 9, 2014

It’s quite something when a young MLS player gets compared to the LA Galaxy’s Robbie Keane, but according to Adam Serrano that’s a comparison the Irish international makes himself when he watches LA Galaxy II youngster Raul Mendiola.

“He’s a player that people like to watch,” Keane said of Mendiola in Serrano’s profile of the 19-year-old Homegrown Player. “He’s the type of player that people like to watch because he can link up play and make things happen.”

Mendiola has made three starts for the Galaxy II this season as the side has gone undefeated to sit on top of the league standings early in the season. As one of a number of Homegrown Players, the native of San Bernardino, Calif. has a chance to be one of the faces of success of USL PRO in the coming years as he gains experience with Los Dos before his opportunity to star for the club’s MLS side arrives.

At 5-foot-8 and 150 pounds, Mendiola isn’t going to be the biggest player on the field, but his quick feet and brain have been put to good use for the Galaxy II so far.

“I try to make the team better even though I’m not the biggest guy. I do have responsibility here and I try not to take it for granted,” Mendiola told Serrano. “Each moment I think that I have to use my smarts to get past bigger players since I don’t grow a lot of muscle.”

As Mendiola continues to progress, in part thanks to his work with the Galaxy II in USL PRO, the hope is he will become the type of standout Keane has been since his arrival in Los Angeles. If that happens, then continued success is likely at StubHub Center.

Dayton Dutch Lions FC News Release -- www.dutchlionsfc.com

Thursday, April 10, 2014

DAYTON, Ohio – The Dayton Dutch Lions FC will host the Rochester Rhinos on Friday night in the club's home opener after playing away for the first two games of the 2014 USL PRO season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be played at Beavercreek Stadium, with all the action also available live on the club’s YouTube channel.

“We want to start our 2014 home campaign with a win,” said Head Coach Sid van Druenen. “After a good win in Charlotte last week the boys are ready to put together a solid performance this Friday and take the 3 points.”

Dayton is coming off a win on the road the past weekend, as they defeated the Charlotte Eagles 1-0 at the Queens Sports Complex. A well-fought battle saw defender Brock Granger score his first professional goal, which proved to be the only goal of the game. The goal earned Granger a spot on the USL PRO Team of the Week, along with goalkeeper Matt Williams, who made some very important saves to earn the shutout for the Lions.

“It was a great game to watch for the neutral supporter,” van Druenen said. “Both teams tried to play attacking soccer and that created many chances for both teams, off course we are happy that we took the win and the focus now is on Friday’s game versus Rochester.”

Friday’s game will be the second of the new USL PRO season for the Rhinos, who are coming off a 3-1 loss against Orlando City and will be looking for a better result against Dayton. The Rhinos' roster has a lot of new faces, including a player that spent preseason with Dayton’s affiliate, the Columbus Crew, center back Patrick Slogic.

The Dutch Lions have partnered with Wright Patterson Air Force Base in hosting a Military Appreciation Night. Highlights of the event will be the Air Force Honor Guard, National Anthem singer and a special presentation for some base leaders and airmen.

Make sure to arrive early for our home opener Friday night at Beavercreek High School. Team Fastrax will perform a skydive to deliver our game ball before the match. Then, at halftime, the juggling king from Holland, Stefan Molendijk will be performing.

W-League Feature

Thursday, April 10, 2014

On the eve of the NWSL season, Portland Thorns standout and USL Women’s Hall of Fame member Christine Sinclair has a clear message as to the defending champions’ intentions for 2014.

“Our goal is to not only win another championship but to have it here,” said the Canadian international in an interview with PortlandTimbers.com’s Dane Carbaugh.

The Thorns appear well equipped to handle their title defense. In addition to Sinclair – who featured for the Vancouver Whitecaps Women in the W-League as they claimed the 2006 championship – the Thorns have also added former New Jersey Wildcats midfielder Amber Brooks, while 2010 W-League champion Veronica Boquete (Buffalo Flash) is also set to join the team.

In addition, the Thorns also have a standout coach in Paul Riley, who could take the team to even greater heights in his first season with the club, which is set to kick off on Saturday on the road against new NWSL franchise the Houston Dash (8 p.m. ET, YouTube.com). According to Sinclair, Riley’s influence has already been felt in the preseason.

“He brings this energy to the game, to every practice,” Sinclair told Carbaugh.

In the end, though, it’s likely that whether the Thorns are able to repeat as champions will in large part depend on the performance of Sinclair and former LA Blues players Alex Morgan and Tobin Heath. Others, such as the Washington Spirit, have made a number of offseason additions, with the Spirit having drafted former Long Island Rough Riders Crystal Dunn with the No.1 pick in the NWSL Draft, and acquired former Seattle Sounders Women standout Veronica Perez.

The Thorns will also get a strong challenge from their Pacific Northwest rival the Seattle Reign, who have added former W-League Rookie of the Year Sydney Leroux to an already strong squad. As the league enters its second season, the challenge to the holders is likely to be strong throughout the summer.

Orlando City SC News Release -- www.orlandocitysoccer.com

Thursday, April 10, 2014

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Orlando City SC announced today that the club will play Italian Serie A side AS Roma in an international friendly for the second consecutive year. The match will take place on Friday, May 23, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.

OCSC season-ticket holders will have priority to purchase tickets beginning on Thursday, April 10, at 11 a.m., and the general public will have an opportunity to secure their seats on Saturday, April 12, beginning at 10 a.m.

In addition, City will also offer a four-game plan, which includes the match against AS Roma on May 23 and the choice of any three remaining home games. To take advantage of this exclusive offer, fans must call 1-855-ORL-CITY.

“AS Roma are one of the top clubs in the world and we are delighted to have them back in Florida again,” said Orlando City President Phil Rawlins. “I know our fans will enjoy seeing The Lions take on a world class team like Roma.”

“Our partnership with Disney is an important part of our efforts to connect with young fans worldwide,” said AS Roma CEO Italo Zanzi. "We look forward to hosting fans, particularly the Disney Memorial Day Shootout players at our training, and for an exciting match versus Orlando City."

The two sides are familiar with one another as Roma and Orlando City participated in an exhibition match in January 2013 at Barker Family Stadium in Winter Park, Fla. The Italian giants, who were in prime mid-season form, defeated the Lions 5-0 in front of a sell-out crowd with superstars Michael Bradley, Daniel De Rossi and Fracesco Totti all making appearances.

In 2012, Roma signed a six-year deal with Walt Disney World to train at the WWOS Complex on an annual basis. Competing in the top division of football in Italy, Roma have won three Serie A championships with their most recent title occurring in the 2000-01 season. After finishing sixth in the Serie A last year, Roma currently sit in second place behind Juventus who are the defending champions.

“It’s always a thrill for the youth athletes and coaches competing and training at our sports complex when A.S. Roma is here,’’ said Disney Sports’ director of sports development Mike Millay. “Having world-class soccer teams, prestigious youth soccer events and creating unique soccer experiences are part of what makes our sports complex one of the premier youth soccer venues in the country.’’

The Lions, on the other hand, will feature a more competitive roster this year after playing with a modified squad in the 2013 off-season match that included eight signed players and multiple trial players.

Orlando City are coming off a championship winning season in 2013 and have made key acquisitions with its inaugural MLS campaign less than a year away. Head Coach Adrian Heath and his staff have added to the existing core of players by completing five MLS signings in 2014, including Yordany Alvarez, Kevin Molino, Darwin Ceren, Tyler Turner and Tommy Redding.

The club has also added veteran players such as Bradford Rusin, Corey Hertzog, and Austin Da Luz, and will be in mid-season form for this year’s international friendly.
