Harrisburg City Islanders News Release -- www.cityislanders.com

Tuesday, April 30, 2013

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Harrisburg City Islanders are off to the best start in franchise history with three wins and no losses or ties as they welcome the Charleston Battery to Skyline Sports Complex on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The defending USL PRO champions arrive having taken two wins in a row, which should make for an entertaining game between a pair of talented squads.

The City Islanders opened their home schedule with a convincing 5-1 win against the Rochester Rhinos on saturday night. The Islander’s claimed their 100th at their 10th anniversary home opener. The team has scored nine goals in the first three games while only conceding three. Six different players have scored goals so far this season. Lucky Mkosana leads the way with three goals, while Sainey Touray has added two.

The Battery are currently 2-1-0 on the season, having lost their season opener in Richmond 4-1. They opened their home schedule a week later by beating Antigua 4-0 and last Saturday won against Pittsburgh 2-0. The Battery are led by last season's Rookie of the Year Jose Cuevas, and former Islander Nikki Paterson.

The Islanders and Battery split their regular season games in the 2013 season as each team won at home. The Battery won 3-1 in Charleston, while the Islanders won on the Island 3-0. The two teams met in the first round of the playoffs in Charleston, and despite an early goal from Brian Ombiji, the Islanders fell 2-1 to the eventual champions.

Gates for Wednesday night's game open at 5:30 pm and kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Bud Light and Shock Top beer specials will be featured until kickoff. For tickets to the game, visit the Islanders website at www.cityislanders.com or phone the box office at 717-441-4625.

PDL Preview

Wednesday, May 1, 2013

The Southwest Division has seen a number of top players emerge and move on to the professional ranks in recent years, with the Ventura County Fusion’s Gabriel and Michael Farfan now with the Philadelphia Union and Gyasi Zardes joining the LA Galaxy this offseason. The Fusion are the defending division champions, and they were joined in the playoffs a season ago by newcomer FC Tucson, who were impressive in their debut.

BYU Cougars – BYU has had some good preseason results, defeating a number of local colleges as it prepares for its opener. The side returns Jace Green, who led the team with six goals a season ago, while goalkeeper Brian Hale and forward Garrett Losee, who had five goals and four assists a year ago, are also expected to return.

FC Tucson – With a new stadium on the way, set to be completed in November, things are moving forward strongly on and off the field in Tucson. Some players have moved on, Reid Schmitt and Donny Toia signing with USL PRO’s Phoenix FC, but returning to the side is 2012 All-Conference selection Conor Spence, who appeared in all 16 regular-season games last year. He is joined by Aaron Long, who had a goal and three assists last season.

Fresno Fuego – The Fuego finished third in the division a year ago, but have a good core returning led by the attacking duo of Paul Islas and Tyler Reinhart. Islas had seven goals and four assists for the Fuego last summer, and he is joined by midfielder Robert Garcia, who had five goals. Defender Edinson Gonzalez, who finished second to Islas with 1,208 minutes in 15 appearances, is also back to anchor the club’s defense.

LA Misioneros – The Misioneros made a marked improvement under their new identity in 2012, and they will try to build on their fourth-placed finish of a year ago this summer. To help them achieve that, former Chivas USA supplemental draft pick Jose Diaz has joined the squad, while the side is also hopeful of big things from Nigerian striker Kyrian Nwabueze. Angel De Alba returns after making 14 appearances to lead the club’s defense as it tries to reach the playoff for the second time.

OC Blues Strikers FC – After finishing in last place a season ago, the former Pali Blues have nowhere to go but up this season. Among the new faces hoping to help the Strikers achieve that are UCLA goalkeeper Juan Cervantes, who appeared in five games for the Bruins as a freshman last fall, and defender Patrick Matchett. Also joining the side is the UC Irvine duo of Enrique Cardenas and Marco Franco, who will look to shore up the club’s defense.

Southern California Seahorses – The Seahorses struggled defensively a season ago, and it took a toll on their finish in the division as they claimed just three wins last summer. Among those who will be looking to turn things around are Kelvin Fares, a 6-foot-3 defender who started 17 games for Vanguard University as a freshman. Alex Anderson of California Baptist is also set to join the side after scoring nine goals and adding five assists last fall.

Ventura County Fusion – The division champion also made a run to the third round of the U.S. Open Cup a season ago, and appears to have another strong squad as it looks to reach the playoffs for a fifth consecutive season. Some have moved on, such as Zardes and Travis Bowen to USL PRO’s Phoenix FC, but players such as Jack Avesyan and Hagop Chirishian, who both spent last season with the Wilmington Hammerheads in USL PRO, will add experience to a group that also contains UC Santa Barbara’s Ema Boateng, who is coming off a freshman season that saw him score four goals and add four assists for the Gauchos. Sam Hayden also returns in goal after making seven appearances a season ago.

U.S. Soccer News Release -- www.ussoccer.com

Wednesday, May 1, 2013

CHICAGO – The play-in round and first round pairings of the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup – the centennial edition of U.S. Soccer’s annual national championship – will be played during the first two weeks of May.

The two play-in matches between amateur clubs will take place on Tuesday, May 7, with the Colorado Rovers (U.S. Specialty Sports Association) hosting the Georgia Revolution (National Premier Soccer League) and Southern California-based FC Hasental (NPSL) heading north to face the Fresno Fuego Future (US Club Soccer).

A week later, the first round is set to open on May 14 with 18 total fixtures to be played on the day. The first round will set a record for most Open Cup games played on a single day in the tournament’s modern era (1995-present), breaking the previous record of 16, set most recently in 2012. The two play-in round winners will be joined 30 other amateur sides, including six other NPSL teams, 16 from the USL Premier Development League, and eight U.S. Adult Soccer Association regional qualifiers. Four professional clubs from USL PRO complete the first round field.

The 2013 tournament features 68 teams, an increase from the 64 that competed last year, marking the largest field in the modern era (1995-present). This year also marks the second-consecutive year in which all U.S.-based Division I, II and III teams will participate in the tournament proper: 16 from Major League Soccer, six from the North American Soccer League and 12 from USL PRO. All Division II clubs and eight of the Division III sides will enter the competition in the second round. Division I teams receive a bye to the third round.

The amount of prize money distributed will also see a substantial increase, with the overall champion earning a total of $250,000 (up from $100,000 in recent years). The tournament runner-up will receive $60,000 (up from $50,000) and the team that advances the furthest from each lower division will win $15,000 (up from $10,000).

Another significant change for 2013 is the process for determining the site for the Open Cup tournament semifinals and final. In past years, the sites for the final three matches of the tournament had been determined through a sealed-bid process, but this year the hosts of those games will be determined by a coin flip. Home teams throughout the entire tournament will be determined by random selection.

W-League News Release

Wednesday, May 1, 2013

TAMPA, Fla. – The W-League is pleased to announce that the 2013 W-League Championship presented by Nike will be held July 26-28 at the world-class facilities of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. With the introduction of the W-20 league for 2013, the premier North American under-20 women’s league will hold its championship alongside the W-League Championship July 25-28 at IMG Academy.

Hosting the W-League Championship at IMG academy is another step in the process of restructuring the W-League and W-20 to distinguish adult women’s soccer throughout North America. The W-League and W-20 continue to be best positioned to prepare players and clubs for the next levels of adult amateur and professional women’s soccer, and each step advances their alignment with U.S. Soccer’s newly formed women’s professional league, the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

The W-League also announced a change in its alignment that will allow four conference champions to travel to the 2013 championship in Bradenton. While the Central Conference and Western Conference will remain intact, the two divisions within the Eastern Conference will become their own respective conferences – the Northeastern Conference and the Southeastern Conference.

“Bringing the W-League Championship to IMG Academy is a significant step forward in raising the profile and overall experience of the W-League’s signature event,” W-League Senior Director Amanda Duffy said. “In addition, having the W-20 Championship run side by side with the W-League Championship allows us to expose our younger players to the next level of women’s soccer in North America while creating a better scouting environment for W-League and professional coaches.

“We are also excited to make the W-League alignment change to provide better competitive balance for final four qualification,” Duffy said. “Creating two conferences from the Eastern Conference allows us to offer a true championship final four featuring the top team from each geographic region.”

The 19th W-League season will see nine teams qualify for the postseason with one champion advancing from each conference to the 2013 W-League Championship presented by Nike. The four conference champions will meet July 26-28 in a ‘final four’ format championship. The semifinals will be played on Friday, July 26 with the winners meeting for the 2013 W-League Championship on Sunday, July 28. The 145-game W-League season slated to kick off on Saturday, May 11.

Eight teams will earn a trip to the inaugural W-20 Championship in July, with playoff allocations based on the number of teams in each division. The North Atlantic Division, which features eight teams in 2013, will receive three spots at the W-20 Championship. The Midwest Division (six teams) and New England Division (five teams) will each have two championship qualifiers, while the four-team South Atlantic Division will have one.

As the premier U-20 adult-amateur women’s league in North America, W-20 provides the necessary platform for top 17- to 20-year-olds in the United States and Canada to compete at an elite level, while also serving as a reserve system for professional and senior adult-amateur women’s teams. W-20 utilizes the W-League’s operational infrastructure that emphasizes quality ownership, league standards and player development to maintain itself as the leader in under-20 women’s soccer in North America.

The world’s largest and most advanced multi-sport training and education complex, IMG Academy regularly hosts top soccer teams from throughout North America and the world. For more than 30 years, IMG Academy has helped countless youth, adult, collegiate and professional athletes reach their full potential in and out of sport, by providing world-class coaching, tailored programs and professional facilities within an energetic environment across a 450-acre campus.

Wilmington Hammerheads News Release -- www.wilmingtonhammerheads.com

Thursday, May 2, 2013

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Wilmington Hammerheads will return to Legion Stadium on Friday night for their second home match of the season after suffering two defeats on the road last weekend in Los Angeles and Phoenix. The Hammerheads, with only three matches under their belt this season, are set to take on the Richmond Kickers at 7:30 p.m.

After catching flack over what might have been the quickest red card of the season, Hammerheads veteran Paul Nicholson has been put on a two-game suspension after committing a hard foul in Los Angeles after only 18 seconds into the first half of the match. Nicholson served the first game of his suspension during the match in Phoenix on Sunday and will serve his second this Friday against the Kickers.

It was a weekend of red cards for the Hammerheads as midfielder Shawn Nicklaw received one during Sunday night’s match in Phoenix. Nicklaw has been placed on a three-game suspension and will be unable to play until Saturday, May 18 when the Hammerheads take on Los Angeles for a second time this season at Legion Stadium.

Friday will be the Hammerheads’ first encounter with the Kickers in the 2013 USL PRO regular season. The two teams last met at City Stadium during the quarterfinals of the 2012 USL PRO Playoffs when the Hammerheads defeated the Kickers 3-2 in the final minute of stoppage time for a spot in the semifinals.

The match Friday night at Legion Stadium is the same night that locally filmed Marvel’s Iron Man 3 will release in theaters throughout the country. Iron Man 3 is predicted to be the biggest blockbuster of the year and was filmed in several locations throughout Wilmington and Screen Gem Studios. Some filming locations that can be distinctly recognized in the movie, such as the Port of Wilmington, are located only minutes from Legion Stadium.

Friday night’s match has been dubbed ‘Superhero Night’ in honor of the release of the film. Not only will we be celebrating the release, but we will also be honoring our real hometown heroes in the community – firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, etc. – for all that they do to keep the safety and save lives every day. Come dressed as your favorite superhero (action or hometown) and have a chance to win some great prize packs and join the fun.

Dayton Dutch Lions News Release -- www.dutchlionsfc.com

Thursday, May 2, 2013

DAYTON, Ohio – The Dayton Dutch Lions FC have had a strong start to the 2013 season, winning two out of their first three games against formidable competition. Dayton hopes to keep the momentum going against the Charleston Battery, when it hosts the defending USL PRO champions at Beavercreek Stadium on Friday night at 7 p.m.

The Dutch Lions are coming off a tough, but successful road trip to Florida last weekend, during which they outlasted VSI Tampa Bay 1-0 before falling to Orlando City 4-0 the following night. Splitting the games away from Dayton brought the Dutch Lions record to 2-1-0, the club’s best start since joining USL PRO in 2011.

“I’m very satisfied with the start of the season,” said Dutch Lions Head Coach Patrick Bal. “We played a man down against Pittsburgh for over an hour, then played Tampa Bay and Orlando on back-to-back nights during our longest road trip of the year. Getting six points out of those three matches is a great start.”

Charleston began the season with a loss at Richmond, but bounced back to defeat Antigua and Pittsburgh in their next two matches. The Battery began their road trip this week well, earning a 2-1 victory against Harrisburg on Wednesday night, and will be looking for a fourth consecutive win when they lace up the cleats in Dayton on Friday.

“We can compete with every team in this league, but we will have to be at 100 percent to beat last year’s champions," Bal said. "I have a lot of respect for their organization, and I am looking forward to a great game. Hopefully, we can keep our unbeaten streak at home alive a little longer."

“We can expect a physical game that will display a lot of skill. Both Dayton and Charleston have experienced professional players from around the world who love to win. This will create a great atmosphere to play in,” said Dayton forward Gibson Bardsley. “We need to play as a team, defend as a unit, and push forward as a unit. If we can push high and press them properly, we should be able to create chances that will lead to goals.”

Charleston barely edged out the Dutch Lions in the two-game series the clubs played in 2012. A goal late in stoppage time gave the Battery a 1-0 victory in Dayton. The two teams played to 0-0 draw in Charleston’s Blackbaud Stadium to finish the regular season. Given the similar starts to this season for both teams, fans at Beavercreek High School can expect to see another exciting, tightly contested match. Tickets for the game are available at www.daytondutchlionsfc.com.

Battery Defeat City Islanders

Wednesday, May 1, 2013

HARRISBURG, Pa. --  On a beautiful night at Skyline Sports Complex the Charleston Battery claimed their third consecutive victory, handing the Harrisburg City Islanders their first defeat of the season with a 2-1 win. Mike Azira and Nicki Paterson both scored for the Battery, with Cris Hernandez answering just before the halftime break for the City Islanders, as Charleston pulled even with Harrisburg on nine points.

The Battery got an early jump on the match when Azira scored from the corner of the penalty area in the 10th minute. Mark Wiltse sent a cross from the far right side across the field, and Azira volleyed back across goal to the far post to put the Battery into the lead.

Charleston doubled its advantage in the 38th minute as Nicki Patterson scored on a penalty kick, shooting low into the right corner of the net, after a handball in the penalty area by City Islanders defender Coady Andrews.  Harrisburg pulled a goal back three minutes later when Lucky Mkosana sent a ball to Hernandez 25 yards from goal. Hernandez drilled a low finish into the right corner of the net, halving the City Islanders' deficit at the halftime break.

The game became a bit chippy as both teams battled on in the second half, and Charleston almost added a third goal in the 58th minute, only for Nick Noble to tip Quinton Griffith's shot over the crossbar after the Antiguan international made a strong run into the penalty area. The Battery continued to try to add to their lead, with Zach Prince shooting a fine effort just wide from 30 yards, and Dane Kelly being denied by Noble with less than 15 minutes to go.

The City Islanders picked up the action the second half as well. Second-half substitute Jimmy McLaughlin sent a shot just wide, while Sainey Touray’s close-range shot was bravely stopped by Charleston goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper. Harrisburg kept the pressure on as the game entered stoppage time, only for the Battery to hold on defensively and claim all three points.

The City Islanders travel to Rochester to face the Rhinos on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. They return home on Friday, May 10th to meet Antigua Barracuda FC in the first of two matches against Antigua at Skyline Sports Complex. Kelly Sporting Goods will provide “Eye Black” tattoos for the first 1,000 youth in attendance.

May 10th’s match will feature the first of six Craft Brew Nights at the Islanders games. Troegs Brewery will be features and fans will be able to sample various Troegs Craft beers as well as the first 100 fans to the beer garden will receive a Troegs Pint glass. Barracudas Development Continuing

USL PRO Feature

Thursday, May 2, 2013

Without question, the road is hard for Antigua Barracuda FC this season. Away from home for much of the summer, with brief returns between their USL PRO schedule and international competitions, the Barracudas will face stern tests as they try to prove their mettle against the best the league has to offer.

While that might be the case, the road that the club has travelled down in its two years of competition has brought soccer in Antigua & Barbuda farther than it ever had before. After reaching the semifinals of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying last year, and the positive performances the side was able to produce, challenging the United States, Jamaica and Guatemala on their home turf, the program is proving a successful platform for the development of the country’s young players.

“I’m extremely happy,” Antigua & Barbuda FC General Secretary Gordon Derrick said this week. “We can see there has been an obvious improvement, a significant improvement, in the quality of play technically and tactically, and I think that can only be attributed to the program that was put together, the quality of USL PRO, providing high competition all the time and competing on a regular basis, travelling and doing all the necessary things to build the team. It has produced an increased standard of play in Antigua, especially in the national team at the next level.”

The benefits of the Barracudas have stretched beyond just the full national team. Current squad members Hazely Pyle and Eugine Kirwan have been key players for the A&B U20 national team, and the experience they gained with the Barracudas last season brought them to the verge of qualification for the final stage of CONCACAF U20 World Cup Qualifying this February. Only the flip of a coin denied them the opportunity advance to Mexico, with Curacao moving on when the coin fell their way after the two teams had finished tied on points, goals scored and goal differential.

The country’s age-group programs, which have also seen players like defender Omarie Daniel play for the U20s and Lloyd Jeremy and Alex Philip for the U23s, are benefitting from the effect of playing alongside professionals such as Tamarley Thomas, Randolph Burton and George Dublin, all of whom have been staples in the national team for a number of years. Those players are also continuing to spread their influence in the country’s amateur league, which has offered additional playing time through the USL PRO offseason as players focus on development year-round.

“You can see the influence of the coaching and what happens with the Barracudas, the professionalism that has been passed down into these amateur teams as they compete in our national league,” Derrick said. “I think all in all, the impact and all of the other things that come with having a pro team, it is doing well for the development of the sport in the country.”

The other effect the Barracudas have had is increasing the visibility of Antiguan players as they look to make moves overseas to continue their growth and face better opposition. The Charleston Battery’s Quinton Griffith and Charlotte Eagles’ Stefan Smith both made the jump this offseason, with Griffith proving an important addition so far this season as the Battery look to defend their title.

According to Derrick, the moves by Griffith and Smith are not only beneficial to the players and the national team, but also to young players in Antigua who will now get to fill their shoes on the Barracudas and try to maximize their potential.

“That was one of the cornerstones on which the entire Barracudas concept was built,” Derrick said. “We are really trying to develop what we would call a conveyor belt that will develop better home-grown players and move them throughout the world. Now, what will happen if this continues at the pace that it’s going, and we are able to move a player or two over the next five years, realistically we will have, apart from the Barracuda players, a really deep pool of professionals eligible and qualified to play for the national team, and that will make the senior national team even stronger.”

One of the players who could be a candidate to head overseas next is Molvin James, who has been one of the players who has benefitted most from the Barracudas. Still only 23, the goalkeeper had a number of standout performances last summer, and was also performing well prior to picking up an injury against Charleston earlier this season.

“The constant training, the professionalism, always being on top of your game an improving, the Barracudas represent that,” Derrick said. “Molvin is a person who is full of confidence, as a goalkeeper he’s not necessarily 6-foot-2, he’s not a very tall goalkeeper, but he has a big heart and he’s not afraid. He understands the game very well, and all of that has come from the constant playing and the constant development. This was absolutely critical for his development.

“Barring injury, he should be a solid member of the national team program for at least 10 years.”

For players like James, Kirwan and Daniel to continue that progression, of course, the Barracudas need to remain a strong presence in the country, and USL PRO. The club gets funding from the country’s government and tourism board, proudly advertising the island on its jerseys, but now the goal for Derrick and the Antigua & Barbuda FA is to grow the club’s coffers through private sponsorship, something which can be hard to find within Antigua. With a population of less than 100,000 people on an island that measures just 108 square miles, there aren’t many companies that see the need to advertise in the United States. As such, Derrick’s aim is to look to the U.S. mainland to try and find additional sponsors.

“For the Barracudas, I hope we can continue to attract the necessary sponsorship for this program,” Derrick said. “It is so different, and unique, how we’re doing this and how it’s come about, so we’re really trying to get businesses on board as partners to help them get value and promotion.”

When that arrives, Derrick believes the opportunity will be available for Antigua & Barbuda to emerge as one of the consistent forces in the CONCACAF region, and achieve the dream of advancing one day to a World Cup at both the senior national team and age-group levels.

“We want to become a household name in CONCACAF when it comes to senior team play, so when we have the Gold Cups and World Cup Qualifiers, Antigua wants to be always mentioned,” Derrick said. “When you get that good run from time to time you will impress someone so that maybe one day, we have the right crop having come through the system and will be able to compete seriously in CONCACAF and qualify for a FIFA World Cup competition.”

Sounders Women News Release - www.sounderswomen.com

Wednesday, May 1, 2013

TUKWILA, Wash. – After a sluggish first half, the Sounders Women netted three second-half goals en route to a 3-0 victory against Seattle Pacific University. All three Sounders goals came from second-half substitutes.

The Sounders held slightly more possession in the first half but the best chances were created by Seattle Pacific. If not for goalkeeper Erin McNulty, the Falcons would have led at half. In the 26th minute, the Canadian National Team member stretched every inch of her 5-foot-11 frame to tip Heather Young’s shot past the upper left corner of the goal.

The Sounders made three substitutions at half time, bringing on Elizabeth Russell at left back, Arica Slawson at left forward, and Maddie Shultz at right forward. All three would factor into the Sounders' second-half goals.

Only 1:40 into the half, Russell found space down the left wing and crossed to the back post. Shultz timed her run to perfection and stretched out her foot to calmly guide home the ball. It was the 15-year-old midfielder's first goal as a Sounder.

Just more than 10 minutes later, in the 58th minute, a Sounders substitute scored again. This time it was Slawson who was first to react after a cross from Melissa Busque was knocked down in between the defense and goalkeeper. Slawson beat the defense to the ball and tucked home the shot from five yards out.

Slawson wasn’t done with her mark on the match. In the 80th minute, with SPU pushing forward for a goal of its own, the Sounders regained possession and tried a long pass over the top of the SPU defense. Goalkeeper Natalie Harold was forced to leave her penalty box to clear with her feet. Her clearance fell to Slawson, who collected the ball, composed herself, and beat her defender with a step-over to her left. The Central Washington All-Decade Team forward shot with her left foot, low and hard, into the corner for the final goal of the match.

The Sounders Women held on for the 3-0 win.

The final college exhibition match for the Sounders Women preseason is on May 10 against the University of Washington. The match includes extra pre-match festivities with a kids-clinic and charity partnership for fan entertainment, so come early and stay tuned on Sounders Women.com for details.

Single-match tickets for the remainder of the season are currently on sale on SoundersWomen.com.

PDL Preview

Thursday, May 2, 2013

The Great Lakes Division was the home to the PDL’s regular-season champion, the Michigan Bucks, and the PDL Champion, FC London, in 2012, with the standard of competition among the highest in the league. Just 10 points separated the second-placed team and bottom team in the division, with tightly-fought games a calling card that is likely to continue on into the new season.

Chicago Fire – Drawing strongly from the club’s academy system, the Fire finished out of the playoff berths for just the second time since 2006. The club’s new direction, however, could pay dividends soon as players returning this summer will likely take a step forward and keep the Fire in playoff contention. Among those to keep an eye on are Tyler Engel, who led SMU last season with eight goals and seven assists, while Chris Prince and other members of the club’s Super-20 team that won a championship last summer could also step into a bigger role.

Chicago Inferno – The Inferno have a new coach for their second season, with Tony Kees bringing with him experience from top youth academies at the Chicago Magic and Chicago Fire. Among the new faces set to play for the side are Jeff Gal, a former U.S. U18 international who will play for the University of Virginia this fall, and former Chicago Fire player Pari Pantazopoulos, who should bring quality to the club’s midfield.

FC London – The PDL champions after their remarkable run through the playoffs have a number of players back to defend their crown. Championship Game MVP Jordan Ayris will be back to lead the attack after scoring nine goals and adding five assists last summer, while goalkeeper Reece Richardson is also back after making 14 regular-season appearances. Other key players returning include Tyler Hemming, Martin Lange and Josh Hughes.

K-W United – No longer the Hamilton FC Rage, K-W United has a new look, and some new players for Coach Brett Mosen to work with. Among them are 6-foot-3 goalkeeper Darrin MacLeod, who joins United ahead of his freshman season at Drake this fall, and Irish midfielder Liam Collins, who arrives after playing the past two seasons with Memphis University. Among the expected returnees to the squad are William Grocott, who had three goals and five assists last summer, and defender Adam Camillo, who made 15 appearances last season.

Michigan Bucks – The Bucks fell to division rival London in the Central Conference Final last season, ending a remarkable run that not only saw the club claim the regular-season title with a record of 13-1-2, but also advance to the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup, defeating the Chicago Fire in the third round. There are some familiar names back with the side, including 2012 Goalkeeper of the Year Adam Grinwis, Thomas Catalano, who had 12 assists a year ago, and Defender of the Year Kevin Cope. Also expected back is Anthony Grant, who led the side with seven goals last summer.

River City Rovers – The club’s best-known player, defender Andrew Farrell, is now starring for the New England Revolution in MLS, but the Rovers will hope to emulate their strong performance of a season ago that saw them earn a berth in the U.S. Open Cup this spring. Among those back with the side are defender Peter May, who had a goal and assist in 15 appearances a year ago, and Lwandiso Gonya, who had three goals in 10 appearances from midfield.

Toronto Lynx – Toronto ended the 2012 season on a five-game undefeated streak, winning its last four matches. While it came too late to earn the side a place in the playoffs, the run did provide a positive experience for some of the club’s players, including those who return to try and push the Lynx on this season. Forward James Galvani, who had eight goals last year, returns to the side, and he is joined by Leigh Viedman, who had four goals, and Aaron McKenna, who appeared in every contest, leading the team in minutes.

Victoria Highlanders News Release -- www.victoriahighlandersfc.com

Friday, May 3, 2013

VICTORIA, B.C. -- Time is winding down before the Victoria Highlanders finally face-off against the Kitsap Pumas on Saturday evening at Royal Athletic Park in the opening game of the 2013 PDL season. To date the Highlanders have a record of 3-1-4 against the Pumas, a team that has been very competitive in the Northwest Division since its inception in 2009, the same year the Highlanders joined the league.

In the eight games played between the two teams each has played at home four times. Each team has scored eight goals throughout the series, averaging a goal a game.

The Highlanders' first win came on July 17, 2009 as they took a 2-1 victory at home, avenging a 2-1 defeat earlier in the season. Patrick Gawrys and Paul Van den Boomen both scored for the Highlanders and Mark Conrad notched Kitsap’s lone tally. There were four cautions given out that game and Kitsap's Stephen Phillips was ejected in the 67th minute.

The second time the Highlanders were able to top the Pumas came two years later on July 23, 2011. The Pumas were having an amazing year, and would go on to win the PDL Championship, and entered the final game of the regular season with a record of 12-0-3. The Highlanders had other ideas and played the role of streak-busters, winning 1-0 at home on Ash Burbeary’s goal. Again, four cautions were given out.

The third and final time that the Highlanders topped the Kitsap Pumas was June 24th, 2012. This proved to be a turning point in the season for the Highlanders when they beat their rivals 3-0 on the road. It was new head coach Steve Simonson’s third game at the helm and his first win while in charge. After what was looking to be a disappointing season for the Highlanders they were able to keep the momentum from that game going and finish the 2012 season with five consecutive games undefeated. Jordie Hughes scored two goals and Sasa Plavsic added another.

The air is tense leading up to the 2013 PDL season for the Highlanders. It starts off with a heated match against a rival squad. The building pressure is to be released at Royal Athletic Park at 5 p.m. PT, and season tickets are on sale through the club's website.

PDL Preview

Friday, May 3, 2013

The PDL’s Heartland Division has been the realm of the Thunder Bay Chill in recent years, but last season saw the re-emergence of both the Kansas City Brass and Springfield Demize to challenge the Real Colorado Foxes and Des Moines Menace in the pecking order. With the St. Louis Lions and an up-and-coming WSA Winnipeg also in the mix, this season could be one of the most competitive in the division in recent years.

Des Moines Menace – The Menace missed out on the playoffs by a point a season ago, but will make a return to the U.S. Open Cup this season under new coach Mike Jeffries. The veteran coach, who played for the U.S. Men’s National Team and coached FC Dallas in MLS, will have a number of returning players to work with, including Husref Jupic, who scored three goals in five games before injury shortened his season. Charlie Bales, who had two goals and three assists in seven games, also returns to the side.

Kansas City Brass – After a disappointing 2011 season, the Brass got back on track with a talented squad last summer that saw Jordan Green earn a Rookie of the Year nomination after scoring seven goals and finishing tied for the league lead with 12 assists. Forward Kyle Greig is now with the Wilmington Hammerheads in USL PRO, but Coach Lincoln Roblee will likely have able replacements to fill the gaps as his side looks to continue its progression.

Real Colorado Foxes – The Foxes make a return trip to the U.S. Open Cup after finishing as runner-up to the Chill last season, and will hope to close the gap at the top of the standings as they look for a second consecutive playoff berth. Lorne Donaldson returns to lead the charge, with the experienced veteran being joined by midfielders Alex Tarnoczi and Michael Lind, each of whom had two goals a season ago. Goalkeeper Miguel Rosales, who recorded a 1.119 goals-against average in 13 games last summer, also returns to the side.

Springfield Demize – The Demize made a major step forward in 2012, and to try and help them push toward playoff contention the club named Sean Fraser as its new coach earlier this year. Midfielder Matthew Walton, who appeared in all 16 games a year ago, returns to the side, as does Craig Rogers, who led the team in minutes while scoring a pair of goals. Kenyan defender Kimathi Kaumbutho also joins the squad from Oral Roberts University.

St. Louis Lions – Tony Glavin’s side will try to bounce back from a last-place finish in 2012, and the veteran coach has added some good young players to try and accomplish that. Among those set to play for the Lions this summer are young Michigan State defender Zach Hollstrom, a top-100 prospect before he red-shirted in his freshman season with the Spartans last fall. Jonathan Brown, who played every minute of the 2012 season, returns to the side, while youngster Grant Owens could be a player to watch.

Thunder Bay Chill – Returning to defend their division title with 2012 PDL Most Valuable Player Sullivan Silva leading the way, the Chill will be a difficult side to knock from top spot in the division. Silva had 13 goals and six assists a season ago, and will be joined by fellow returnees Jose Altamirano, a former U.S. U20 National Team player. The Chill will also have 6-foot-6 Marquette defender Axel Sjoberg back for another season.

WSA Winnipeg – Led by Coach Eduardo Badescu, Winnipeg has seen a number of bright young performers come through its system in the past two seasons. Among those is Ali Musse, who last year was called into the Canadian U18 team. Musse, who had two goals and an assist a season ago, could be joined by former U17 international Moses Danto, who led the team with eight goals a season ago.

Rochester Rhinos News Release -- www.rhinossoccer.com

Friday, May 3, 2013

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Rhinos will open their 18th season in Rochester on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Sahlen's Stadium against the Harrisburg City Islanders. After an exciting offseason Rochester entered the 2013 season with championship expectations, but they have gotten off to a surprising 0-4-1 start.

Rhinos Head Coach Jesse Myers first move during the offseason was to bring back 14 players from the squad that finished second in the 2012 USL PRO standings, and lost in penalty kicks at Sahlen's Stadium to eventual champion the Charleston Battery in the USL PRO Semifinals.

After re-establishing the foundation of his club for the 2013 season, Myers made several key additions during the off-season including 2012 All-USL PRO Second Team selection Matt Luzunaris and former MLS players Blake Brettschneider (32 appearances with D.C. United and New England), Ross LaBauex (three seasons with Colorado), and Lance Rozeboom (missed 2012 in D.C. United with torn ACL after standout senior season with New Mexico). Rochester also entered into a landmark affiliation with the New England Revolution in January 2013, and the Rhinos received four additional MLS players on season long loans.

“I think we're a team that has good talent. Slowly getting everyone back (from injury and suspension) will help, but it's imperative for our mental state that we get some results.” Myers said.

The Rochester Rhinos capped off a season opening stretch of away matches that had them playing five times in 15 days with a 5-1 loss to the City Islanders in Harrisburg last weekend. Bilal Duckett, who was recalled to the New England Revolution this week and played a full 90 minutes in their 0-0 draw with Portland on Thursday night, scored the Rhinos only goal off an assist from Webster, N.Y. native Mike Reidy, who was making his first professional start.

Brettschneider was sent off in the 43rd minute of the match leaving the Rhinos to play the entire second half a man down. City Islanders starting forwards Sainey Touray and Yann Ekra had a goal and an assist each. Touray was named the USL PRO Player of the Week for his efforts in the City Islanders 100th win as a professional soccer club. Left back Don Anding joined Touray on the USL PRO Team of the Week while Ekra, Lucky Mkosana, and Colin Zizzi earned honorable mention. Mkosana scored two goals in the last 15 minutes as a substitute.

“I felt like we never found the rhythm in our attack.” Myers said. “However, a man down for 20 minutes we were able to possess the ball and stick to our game plan. The unacceptable situation where we gave up three late goals was very disappointing. That's where we need to change our mentality.”

The Rochester Rhinos opened up their 2013 USL PRO season with a trip to Florida where they lost to first-year USL PRO club VSI Tampa Bay 3-0 on Saturday, April 13th, 2013 and then lost 3-1 in Orlando to the City Lions less than 24 hours later.

The next weekend the Rhinos flew to Charlotte where they drew with the Eagles 0-0 on Friday, April 19th before travelling overnight and losing to Richmond 4-1 after they were reduced to nine men with red cards to center back Georgios Kyriazis and center midfielder Tyler Rosenlund.

This is the fifth time that the Rochester Rhinos have opened a season with a losing record after five matches, and only the second time in club history that they are winless after five matches. In each of the previous four seasons Rochester persevered and made the playoffs. In 2008 the Rhinos opened the season 0-4-2 before rebounding with a 7-1-5 stretch after losing their home opener 1-0 to Charleston on May 17th, 2008. The Rhinos have never missed the playoffs in the 17-year history of the club. The 2013 edition of the Rochester Rhinos is looking forward to starting the home portion of their schedule.

“We're finally at home," Myers said. "We get the benefit of playing a schedule that is more conducive to winning and playing better football.”

Season tickets, flex packages and group ticket sales are currently available, and they can be purchased by calling (585)454-KICK (5425), by visiting the MVP Health Care Box Office at Sahlen's Stadium, or by visiting ticketmaster.com. Individual tickets for the 2013 USL PRO season are also on sale now.

Orlando City News Release -- www.orlandocitysoccer.com

Friday, May 3, 2013

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando City (4-1-1, 13 points) hosts Antigua Barracuda FC (0-3-0, 0 points) this Saturday night at Fifth Third Bank Field at the Florida Citrus Bowl, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. After Tuesday night’s match was cancelled due to severe weather, Orlando looks toward Saturday as the Lions wrap up their first homestand of the 2013 USL PRO regular season.

Orlando is currently undefeated at home through the beginning of the 2013 USL PRO season, winning all three of their matches played in Central Florida. The Lions have an impressive goal differential of +7 in the three home matches played, scoring 10 goals while only allowing three.

Antigua will be coming in off a game on Friday night against VSI Tampa Bay FC where they will be looking for their first points of the season. The Barracudas fell in each of their first three games of the season, before participating in the CFU Club Championship this past week in Trinidad and Tobago. Antigua was the last team to defeat Orlando in the regular season at the Florida Citrus Bowl, taking a 2-1 victory that saw current Barracudas midfielder Randolph Burton score the winning goal.

The Antigua match also marks the beginning of matches in the month of May for the Lions, who travel to play the Seattle Sounders Reserves on Sunday, May 12, to kick off a three-game road swing that lasts the majority of the month of May. The Sounders Reserves match is the first of two for Orlando against the Reserve League side, with the game counting in each team’s respective league tables.

The match between Orlando City SC and VSI Tampa Bay FC was cancelled due to severe weather just before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night. After an hour delay, team and league officials called the game due to an incoming severe weather system that would not allow play to occur. The match has been rescheduled for Wednesday, August 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Fifth Third Bank Field at the Florida Citrus Bowl.
