Rhinos Aiming To Build Midfield

Rochester Rhinos News Release -- www.rhinossoccer.com

Wednesday, January 16, 2013

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Rochester Rhinos head coach Jesse Myers has begun to build his team for the 2013 season by bringing back two goalkeepers and five defenders from last year’s second place finishers in the USL PRO table. The picture in midfield is a little less clear two months before players report to training camp due to two significant injuries, and Myers desire to introduce some new chemistry to the unit for the 2013 season.

2011 Rhinos Most Valuable Player Tyler Rosenlund will return to Rochester for his fourth season to resume his role as the focal point in central midfield, but 2012 Rhinos Most Valuable Player JC Banks’ status for 2013 is uncertain after a season ending ACL injury last summer. Banks and the midfield proved to be essential to the Rhinos' attack last season when they scored 12 goals and produced 38 points. The unit also contributed to the Rhinos' second-best defensive record in USL PRO.

Rosenlund has been a key cog in the Rochester midfield since he was signed by then-head coach Bob Lilley before the 2010 season. He is a box-to-box midfielder who has the pace and endurance to get forward and support the attack while also being able to recover and help out defensively. He has appeared in 73 regular season matches for the club and logged 5,777 minutes with six goals and six assists for 18 points. The 26 year-old has saved some of his best work for the playoffs with four points in four career playoff matches.

“Rosey has been a valuable part of the midfield in Rochester here for the past three seasons,” Myers said. “His work rate and endurance are unmatched in USL PRO, which is a strong statement in a league that is based on athleticism. Rosey’s ability to get box-to-box to contribute in defense and support the attack allows us to do a number of different things tactically.”

Right winger JC Banks was on the way to a historic season with the Rochester Rhinos until he was slowed down and ultimately shutdown with a knee injury. Banks originally injured his knee on July 21st at Sahlen’s Stadium against Pittsburgh. He scored the game winning goal in the 10th minute and then had to be subbed off nine minutes later. Banks would start in two of the Rhinos next three matches, but he did not record a point. He was ultimately shut down for the season on August 18th after he appeared as a substitute in the Rhinos 1-0 victory over Pittsburgh, but had to be removed from the match after only 11 minutes. He was diagnosed with a torn ACL the following week and had reconstructive surgery at home in Michigan in September.

Banks had a breakout season in 2012 with five goals and eight assists, but he failed to record a point after his initial injury on July 21st. He was named First Team All-USL PRO, won the USL PRO assist title, and was selected as the Rhinos Offensive Player of the Year in addition to being named the club MVP. He finished with the second most assists in Rhinos single season history, and already ranks tied for ninth on the career assist list.

Chris Estridge joined the Rhinos in July after being released by Major League Soccer's Real Salt Lake. Myers used the versatile Estridge as a left back and as a winger on both flanks. He played more than 500 minutes in seven matches for the Rhinos last season, and started in the Rhinos' loss on penalty kicks to the Charleston Battery in the USL PRO Semifinal. Estridge broke his foot while training with his alma mater Indiana University during the off-season.

“JC and Chris are two great young players with aspirations to play professionally in Major League Soccer.” Myers said. “Both of these guys were unlucky to suffer significant injuries in the late summer and early fall. Both of these guys are working hard to get back on the field, regain their form, and get invited into a(n) (MLS) training camp. We wish them the best of luck in their pursuits, we’re continuing to talk to them, and we’re interested in bringing them back if things don’t work out for them at the next level.”

The versatile Danny Earls is returning for the 2013 season. Earls appeared in every match last season and he joined captain Troy Roberts as one of only two Rhinos to break the 2,000 minutes played plateau with 2,070 minutes as a left winger, left back, and central midfielder. He had his best scoring season with Rochester in 2012 when he had two goals and three assists. Earls played two seasons for the Rhinos in 2008 and 2009 before moving to the Colorado Rapids (MLS) in 2010 and 2011. Altogether the 23 year old has already appeared in 65 matches and logged 5,120 minutes with the Rhinos.

“Danny was a late addition to the squad last season, and ended up being one of our most important players logging over 2,000 minutes.” said Myers. “He joined Tyler Rosenlund with a high defensive work rate in midfield, and he was able to run at people and take them on when we were in possession of the ball. His ability to serve balls into the box from the run of play and from set pieces is also an important part of our attacking play. He filled in a number of different positions for us last season, and we see him being a major contributor for us again this season.”

The Rochester Rhinos are also bringing back cult hero Michael Tanke for a third season. Tanke has appeared in 29 matches and made 18 starts for the club over the past three seasons. Tanke’s hard work and gritty play as evidenced by his 24 fouls, including 16 last season, have made him a blue collar fan favorite in the City of Rochester. He also showed flashes of attacking ability from his traditional position deep in midfield with one goal and one assists last season.

“Tanke is a young player who gives us a little bit of steel in the midfield.” Myers said. “He’s a player who was a spot starter for us, and came off the bench late in matches to help us close up shop. At 23 he is still a young player, and we’re excited to take a look at him in camp to see how he is going to fit into the squad this season”

With only three midfielders under contract for the 2013 season Myers still has some work to do in assembling this unit.

“Clearly our work isn’t done yet in midfield.” Myers said. “We’ve got some pieces in place, but I’d like to bring in a true holding midfielder who can screen the back four and help us get even better defensively. I’m on the road looking at some younger players who can provide us with some depth, and we obviously need to see how the off-season injury situation works itself out. We might need to bring in another attacking piece on the right flank.”

Manneh No Longer A Mystery

By ANTHONY MANNINO

AUSTIN, Texas -- Born in the coastal city of Bakau, the 2013 MLS SuperDraft enigma Kekuta Manneh quickly broke the shroud questioning his abilities at the MLS Combine.

“For me, I am always looking forward to being the new kid and coming in and showing everybody what I can do,” said Manneh, pictured right, on being the unknown player at the combine. “People that never knew me can see what I am all about. I think that really helps me out.”

While most pundits are calling Manneh the “mystery player of the 2013 MLS draft,” the forward isn’t worried about his perceived hype or reservations about his talent. He knows he has scored and been successful at each level and scoring in MLS will only prove that he belongs with the best.

The questions surrounding Manneh have muffled during the MLS combine. He impressed those watching with his skill, tactical decision-making and speed; he even scored a goal a few minutes after he stepped on the pitch.

As those who’ve already seen him play for the Austin Aztex know, Manneh is confirming he isn’t a prospect with raw physical abilities and soccer talent that needs to be developed, but rather a soccer talent that happens to have physical gifts. Though, the journey to become the next soccer star began on the streets and dirt roads of the region known as the Gambian Brazil.

“They call it the Gambian Brazil, because most of the national team players are from that town, and the Golcok Academy (now Rush) is there,” said Manneh on how Bakau earned its name. “They mostly produce talented players that play in Scandinavian leagues and Belgium, and soccer is pretty big there, so that’s why they call it the Gambian Brazil.”

Although born in a hotbed for soccer talent, Manneh recalls how tough life was in Gambia:

“Most people don’t have much (in Gambia), but they are okay with what they have. They provide for their family. Nobody has big houses in Gambia–most of our houses are a living room and a bedroom.”

Manneh grew up in a three-room house–two bedrooms and a living room–with his grandmother in Gambia. He recalls the time his grandmother bought him a soccer ball. He immediately told his friends so they could play with his new ball on the streets.

The beautiful game was constantly part of the striker’s life; he played everyday on dirt roads, paved roads, and on the beach. Whether it was before school, after school, 5v5, 4v4, the place or time didn’t matter. Usually lacking the necessary equipment, Manneh and his friends used rocks as goals and drew lines with rocks for boundaries, stopping only when a car would pass by.

The Rush Academy (a worldwide youth soccer club) in Gambia discovered Manneh’s talents, and he was brought over to the United States to play for the Rush’s Georgia club. After a successful few months in Georgia, Manneh moved to play for Texas Rush, scoring 35 goals in 21 games at the U-16 level. A year later, he tallied 21 goals in 16 games for Lonestar FC.

While Manneh’s abilities on the field easily transitioned to the United States, he still needed help dealing with the American lifestyle. Sixteen at the time, he moved to a foreign country without the help of his family or knowing how life would by different in the States.

A host family in Georgia first helped Manneh acclimate to the American culture, and then the Niccum family took him in as legal guardians when he moved to Texas. The Niccum’s helped him adjust to the lifestyle in the States. The family of five made Manneh feel like he had a home, and he says they are why he is successful. They also got him back in school and made sure he took all the basic immunization shots that he didn’t get growing up as a kid in Gambia.

Manneh also receives advice from Paul Dalglish, his coach with Lonestar FC and the Austin Aztex, whom he considers a father figure. The two talked almost daily about everything from soccer to Manneh’s personal life, and Dalglish always makes sure to remind the striker to, as Manneh puts it, “stay fit, work on my defensive shape, and stay out of trouble.”

“Paul is part of my family now; he’s helped me on the pitch and off it,” Manneh said. “He calls me all the time and gives me advice and tells me what I need to do to get ready for the next level. Since I’ve been to the United States, he’s the best coach I’ve had.”

What separates Manneh from other players his age are his inherited talents. He retains a first touch on the ball only reserved for the greats. He proved this at a recent camp with the Austin Aztex when Manneh juggled the ball 257 times with his right foot in a minute, always keeping the ball no more than a few centimeters from his foot. The skill dazzled his former Aztex teammates so much they were too busy watching Manneh juggle to worry about their own count.

All things considered, it is surprising his teammates were baffled by the simple craft considering what he had done playing with them all summer. It took the striker only 29 minutes to score his first Premier Development League goal, and what a strike it was. A young opposing fan stood up and yelled, “¡que golazo!” after Manneh cut inside with his root foot to juke a defender; back outside with his left to round the keeper; then inside again with his right to make the original defender fall; before easily slotting the ball home.

Manneh turned eluding the same defenders twice into an art form for the Aztex. Against the New Orleans Jesters, the striker cut inside, outside, then inside again, however, this time forcing the same defender to fall not once but twice before scoring. The referee scolded Manneh for what could be called “excessive showing of skill”, and he could’ve given him a yellow card for publicly embarrassing the defender.

Tricks aren’t the only reason why the Gambian is successful. Dalglish describes it as certain coolness in front of goal that he possesses; he even went as far to comparing the striker’s finishing to Michael Owen. Manneh never panics when he is one-on-one with a keeper or defender, but rather he exquisitely times if he should shoot the ball or wait for the opposition to make the first move. That’s why he finished tied for seventh with 10 goals in the regular season as a 17-year-old playing against high level college players in the PDL for Austin.

“I think this is a great start for me (to begin my career) in MLS,” Manneh said. MLS will be a great start for me. I know it is very physical, but I will work with it to get a little stronger.”

To get in peak physical condition, Dalglish sent Manneh to train 11-12 hours for 10 days with David Dinh. He worked on his fitness and numerous new drills he wasn’t used to.

Manneh also isn’t worried about being only 5-foot-9’, 160 pounds in MLS, because he has the skills to move by those bigger defenders. He also carries an air of confidence needed in any goalscorer. Don’t begin to think the youngest Generation adidias player in 2013 is letting the draft get to his head. He believes in himself, but knows he still must practice diligently.

“This is my dream; I’ve been preparing for this my whole life,” Manneh said on signing with MLS. “Last season I played with the Aztex, and I did well against top players and players preparing to go pro. So I think I am ready physically, mentally, and skill-wise I am ready to go.”

With Manneh a likely top-ten pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, the mist surrounding him will slowly begin to fall. He knows, however, that the only way to end all doubt is to bang the ball in the back of the net at the highest level. He relishes that opportunity to become known as one of those talented players from the Gambian Brazil.

PDL News Release

Thursday, January 17, 2013

TAMPA, Fla. – Led by former River City Rovers and IMG Bradenton Academics standout Andrew Farrell, who was taken with the No. 1 overall selection by the New England Revolution, former PDL standouts highlighted the 2013 MLS SuperDraft on Thursday afternoon. Held in conjunction with the NSCAA Convention in Indianapolis, the SuperDraft saw six former PDL players and one former Super-20 League standout selected in the Top 10, and 27 former PDL and Super-20 alumni selected overall.

The 2013 MLS SuperDraft continued the remarkable success of the PDL in helping the development of potential future professionals. In the past four seasons, 137 of the 194 players selected in the SuperDraft have played in the PDL, a remarkable 71 percent of selections. The past two MLS Rookie of the Year honorees have also been PDL alumni, with Reading United’s C.J. Sapong (Sporting Kansas City) taking the honor in 2011, and the Chicago Fire PDL’s Austin Berry (Chicago Fire) winning the award in 2012.

Farrell opened the 2012 PDL season with the Academics before returning to Louisville, where he also starred for the University of Louisville this fall, to complete the season with River City, for whom he made five appearances as they finished third in the Great Lakes Division. He is the second consecutive former PDL player to be taken with the No. 1 overall selection of the SuperDraft, following former Reading United and Carolina Dynamo standout Andrew Wenger, who was selected by the Montreal Impact a year ago.

Both the Austin Aztex and Reading United had a pair of players selected in the SuperDraft’s Top 10, with the Vancouver Whitecaps trading up to selected Austin’s PDL All-Southern Conference Selection Kekuta Manneh with the No. 4 pick. Blake Smith was selected with the No. 8 pick by the Montreal Impact, while Dillon Powers was also selected in the first round, being taken by the Colorado Rapids with the No. 11 selection. The SuperDraft success capped a remarkable return for the Aztex, who reached the PDL Southern Conference Final in their return to action last season.

Reading’s 2012 All-League honoree Deshorn Brown, who also played for the Des Moines Menace in 2011, was taken with the No. 6 selection by the Colorado Rapids after leading the PDL with 13 goals in 13 games last summer. Brown was joined by fellow United standout Ryan Finley in the Top 10, taken by the Columbus Crew with the No. 9 selection after a standout fall at Notre Dame that saw him named a finalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy. Finley had previously played in the PDL for the Central Jersey Spartans and Ocean City Nor’easters, spending four seasons in the league as he continued his development.

Reading United led all PDL teams with five players selected in the SuperDraft, with Ian Christianson being taken by the New York Red Bulls with the No. 22 selection. A pair of 2012 All-Eastern Conference Team selections were also selected, with Stephen Okai taken with the No. 31 pick by the Philadelphia Union, Reading’s MLS affiliate, and Greg Cochrane being taken by the Los Angeles Galaxy with the No. 38 pick.

Another former PDL standout taken in the Top 10 was former Portland Timbers U-23s standout Erik Hurtado, who made the jump across the Cascadia rivalry when he was selected by the Vancouver Whitecaps with the No. 5 pick. Former Columbus Crew Juniors standout Eriq Zavaleta, who was named to the 2011 Super-20 League North American Finals All-Tournament Team, rounded out the Top 10 after being selected by the Seattle Sounders FC.

Other PDL standouts taken in the first round of the SuperDraft included former Orange County Blue Star midfielder Mikey Lopez, taken with the No. 14 pick by Sporting Kansas City. Former Portland Timbers U-23s standout Emery Welshman was taken with the No. 16 pick by Toronto FC, while former Real Colorado Foxes defender Taylor Kemp was taken with the No. 17 pick by D.C. United.

Rounding out the first round were former Sounders FC U23 standout Fernando Monge, taken with the No. 18 pick by the Montreal Impact, and former Worcester Hydra FC and GPS Portland Phoenix standout Charlie Rugg, taken with the No. 19 pick by the Los Angeles Galaxy.

W-League News Release

Friday, January 18, 2013

TAMPA, Fla. – Led by former LA Strikers standout Zakiya Bywaters, selected with the No. 1 overall pick by the Chicago Red Stars, former W-League standouts featured prominently in the inaugural National Women’s Soccer League Draft, held on Friday morning in conjunction with the NSCAA Convention in Indianapolis. Bywaters led a group of five former W-League players selected in the first round, and 17 overall, who will join the NWSL for its inaugural season this spring.

Bywaters’ selection as the No. 1 overall pick continues the W-League’s history of helping develop top college players as they move toward the professional ranks. Sydney Leroux (No. 1, 2012 WPS Draft), Alex Morgan (No. 1, 2011 WPS Draft) and Tobin Heath (No. 1, 2010 WPS Draft) all precede Bywaters as top selections who arrived in the professional ranks with W-League experience.

Bywaters, also a standout at UCLA, made six appearances for the Strikers this past summer, scoring once. She was followed in the draft by former Pali Blues standout Tiffany McCarty, taken with the No. 2 selection by the Washington Spirit, while former Chicago Red Eleven defender Casey Short was selected fifth by the Boston Breakers.

Former D.C. United Women standout Christine Nairn, who was a finalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy last week, was taken by the Seattle Reign with the No. 7 selection, and the opening round was completed by the Portland Thorns, who selected 2012 W-League Championship MVP Kathryn Williamson of the Ottawa Fury with the final selection.

Williamson wasn’t the only former W-League champion to be selected, with Atlanta Silverbacks standout goalkeeper Ashley Baker being taken by Sky Blue FC with the 20th selection. Baker was the goalkeeper for the Silverbacks when they claimed the 2011 W-League Championship against Ottawa. Mariah Nogueira, who played for the Pali Blues’ 2009 championship side, was selected with the No. 13 pick by the Boston Breakers.

In addition to McCarty and Nogueira, Pali also saw Rachel Quon selected, giving the Blues three selections overall, the most of any W-League team. Other standouts selected included former Bradenton Athletics mifielder Erika Tymrak, taken with the No. 11 pick by FC Kansas City, Colorado Rush standout Kendall Johnson, selected by Sky Blue FC with the No. 12 pick, former Real Colorado Cougars standout Taylor Vancil, selected by the Chicago Red Stars with the No. 17 pick, and former D.C. United Women defender Holly King, who returns to the capital as a member of the Washington Spirit.

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Vancouver Whitecaps FC will be making a first ever visit to the Carolina Challenge Cup next month and head coach Martin Rennie has been busy fine-tuning his squad in advance of the tournament. Rennie is no stranger to the Charleston Battery and Blackbaud Stadium having coached against the Battery during his time with the Carolina RailHawks. The Whitecaps also played against the Battery while both were members of the United Soccer Leagues First Division from 1997 to 2009.

Whitecaps sign defender Brad Rusin
Vancouver bolstered its defensive options last week with the acquisition of defender Brad Rusin. Rusin, 26, joins the Whitecaps after spending the past year-and-a-half with HB Køge following their promotion to the Danish Superliga in 2011 and continuing into their 2012-13 season in the Danish First Division. The Crown Point, Indiana, native played a total of 38 matches in Denmark and contributed offensively with three goals.

Prior to his time in Europe, the 6-foot-4 centre back played two-plus seasons under Rennie at Carolina RailHawks. Rusin – who was named team captain during the 2011 season – appeared in 54 matches and scored two goals for the RailHawks during his time with the club.

Andy O'Brien training with Bolton Wanderers during off-season
Following an impressive debut with the Whitecaps after joining the club late in the 2012 season, centre back Andy O’Brien wanted to stay fit and in-form during the off-season. To do this O’Brien, a Republic of Ireland international, returned to his former club, English npower Championship side Bolton Wanderers, for a one-month training spell.

Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie hopes that this training period will be extremely positive for the ‘Caps centrer back.

“Andy has a history with Bolton, having played with them in the past, and he has a home nearby, so it made sense for him to train with them during the off-season to keep in shape,” said Rennie. “He played great for us down the stretch last season, so for him to keep fit, keep sharp, and keep the momentum going will be really good for him and for our team as we head into preseason this year.”

O’Brien appeared in nearly 90 matches during his time with Bolton, which lasted from 2007 until 2011. O’Brien was a member of the then EPL Bolton Wanderer’s side that defeated the Charleston Battery 2-0 in a 2010 summer exhibition match.

Richmond Kickers News Release -- www.richmondkickers.com

Friday, January 18, 2013

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce that midfielder Philippe Davies has been named to the Canadian Men’s National Team’s 22-man roster for the upcoming camp, January 19-30. As part of the camp, Canada will feature in two Men’s International Friendlies, taking on Denmark on January 26 in Tucson, Ariz. before facing the United States on January 29 in Houston.

Having represented Canada at the U17, U20 and U23 international levels, the 22-year old is one of 10 players to earn his first call-up to the Men’s National Team. With an average age of just under 25, this is the youngest Canadian team to be assembled since May 2006.

“Philippe's selection to the Men's National Team is a significant accomplishment and a great honor for the club,” said Leigh Cowlishaw, Richmond Kickers Director of Soccer. “It's going to be a great learning experience to train alongside Canada's finest young players and play against the Danish and U.S. National teams. We rate Philippe very highly and expect to see him back in Major League Soccer very soon."

Interim head coach Colin Miller has stated that the camp will provide an important opportunity to assess the ‘future’ of the Canadian team.

“One of our key objectives for this camp is to look towards the future and give some of our young players a chance,” said Miller. “It is important for us to take a step forward during the camp and over the course of the next two matches. We expect the young players to come in very hungry and looking to show well for the future of the Men’s National Team.”

Davies joined the Kickers midseason in 2012, making six appearances and posting his first assist in a Kickers uniform on July 28 against the Charlotte Eagles. The native of Longueuil, Quebec transferred to Richmond after an extensive professional career with the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, becoming the Whitecaps' first-ever Major League Soccer homegrown player and Canadian signing in 2010.

Having first joined with the Whitecaps U-23 Premier Development Team in 2007, he played an integral role in helping the team reach the PDL semifinals in their first season. Making his professional debut for the senior Vancouver Whitecaps in a 4-0 victory against the Minnesota Thunder on July 9, 2009, he continued on to make 29 appearances over two seasons, notching one goal and two assists. Prior to joining the Whitecaps FC Residency squad as an inaugural member, Davies featured for the U-16 and reserve sides of the French Ligue 2 club Dijon Football Côte-d'Or in 2006.

Ocala Stampede News Release -- www.ocalastampede.com

Monday, January 21, 2013

OCALA, Fla. – The Ocala Stampede announced today the appointment of Cheyne Roberts as the new head coach of its USL PDL team.

“At this point in my career and after speaking with the management, I cannot think of a better club to start with,” said Roberts. “I am excited to start building this team and to begin reaching the community through the Stampede.”

Roberts, a former professional player in USL PRO with the Charlotte Eagles, quickly moved to the college coaching ranks as an assistant with Division II program Palm Beach Atlantic. The 24-year-old Roberts has been an assistant coach under Jose Gomez since 2010. Roberts made 18 appearances for the Eagles in the 2012 USL PRO season, recording one assist while finishing sixth on the team in minutes.

“We’re very excited to have Cheyne as a part of the Ocala Stampede family. That he brings professional experience as a player and as a coach from the collegiate level makes him the ideal leader for the club’s future,” said Bill Reed, owner of the Ocala Stampede.

Roberts played with Palm Beach Atlantic from 2006-2010, having an impressive college career which included being honored as an NCCAA All-American and NCAA All-Region selection.

“The Stampede provide a great opportunity to make an impact in the league and also in the Open Cup,” Roberts said. “We want to play with an entertaining style and we want to try and bring out the best in each player, on and off the field. Orlando City U23s News Release -- www.orlandocitysoccer.com

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Orlando City Soccer Club has announced that Senior Boys Academy Director Paul Shaw will become the new head coach for the Orlando City U23s. In addition to his role as a Director, Shaw will also take over as manager of the U23 squad who advanced to the PDL National Semifinals in 2012 and were the Southern Conference Champions.

“I'm extremely pleased and excited to be given the opportunity to lead the U23 PDL team,” said Shaw. “My aim is to continue to implement the club’s philosophy and style of play for the PDL team.”

Throughout his career, Shaw compiled an extensive resume as a player having made appearances for 15 professional clubs in Europe- including English Premier League giant Arsenal F.C. Shaw obtained his UEFA “B” License and, in 2011, was the head coach for former USL PRO side FC New York. Orlando City Soccer Club officials are certain that Shaw’s detailed background as a player and a coach will provide a positive impact for the U23 team.

The announcement was made after recent changes occurred in management with the PDL club. General Manager Terry Garzon and Head Coach Joe Avallone decided to step down to focus on their personal lives and business obligations. Avallone and Garzon had a highly successful 10-year tenure, winning the national championship in 2004, multiple playoff appearances and a Southern Conference championship in 2012.

“The club would like to thank Joe and Terry for all their hard work and success over the past 10 years. They have built successful teams both on and off the field and have made a significant contribution to junior soccer in Central Florida,” said Orlando City President Phil Rawlins. “Going forwards we know that the U23 team will be in very capable hands under Paul’s leadership. He has a proven track record in professional soccer and understands fully how important the team is to our future as a club”.

After being officially integrated with OCSC this past year, the Orlando City U23s had a successful inaugural season. The Lions finished second in their division (8-3-5) and defeated the Austin Aztex 4-2 en route to a semi-final appearance. The U23’s fell short, 2-1, to the Carolina Dynamo but marked their first appearance in the Final Four since the 2004 season.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Charlotte Eagles are pleased to announce that veteran goalkeeper Eric Reed is coming back for another season in the orange and blue.  The Eagles captain, Reed, 29, is looking to build on a very successful season in the net for the Eagles. The former UCLA Bruin has found a home in Charlotte after playing previously for the Carolina RailHawks, Cleveland City Stars and California Victory.

While the coaching staff and front office are putting the 2013 Eagles squad together it is nice to know that they can count on Reed to build around. Reed was tied for third in USL PRO in goals against-average in 2012 with a 1.00 average. He recorded seven shutouts while playing 1,890 minutes in 20 games last season. In addition, I am anticipating an incredible camp season and all that the Lord has in store for His children. Both on and off the field, I believe 2013 will bring a lot of excitement and passion and I look forward to seeing all the different ways that Jesus will work in our lives!"

Orlando City News Release -- www.orlandocitysoccer.com

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando City (USL PRO) and Sporting Kansas City (Major League Soccer) are proud to announce a two-year partnership on Wednesday, with the Lions becoming the official USL PRO affiliate of Sporting KC. The landmark agreement made by the two clubs kicks off an important stepping stone in the U.S. soccer pyramid, with MLS reserve players to be integrated into USL PRO play beginning in 2013.

“We are excited to begin our partnership with one of the greatest MLS brands, Sporting KC,” said Orlando City President Phil Rawlins. “We believe the integration of USL and MLS will go down as an important day in the history of the American soccer pyramid.”

Starting with an announcement earlier today via the two leagues, MLS teams now have the chance to partner with USL PRO clubs. As an official affiliate, Orlando City will retain a minimum of four Sporting KC players for development throughout the USL PRO regular season. Those players would then get playing time, in preparation to be called up by their MLS club. The four reserve players Sporting will send to Orlando for the 2013 season have not yet been announced.

Both clubs are known to be top-level organizations within their respective leagues, making for a logical partnership.

Sporting Kansas City began developing a strong relationship with Orlando City Soccer Club during the team's 2012 pre-season trip to Orlando, where the team will return next month for the 2013 Disney Pro Soccer Classic. The teams met in the Third Round of the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Sporting Park and have remained in regular communication over the last several months for opportunities to develop a more meaningful professional partnership.

In addition to providing loan opportunities for select Sporting Kansas City reserve players, the technical staffs from both teams will collaborate on several initiatives including joint coaching seminars, business endeavors, scouting mechanisms and access to facilities.

These efforts would strive to be mutually beneficial for both clubs and serve to build upon the foundation that has been established.

"We are fortunate Orlando City has agreed to partner with us in this new, groundbreaking opportunity. They are a class club and this will be a great partnership for both organizations," Sporting Kansas City Manager Peter Vermes said. "It will provide beneficial opportunities for our players to develop within a competitive environment for a tremendous organization and fanbase. Together, our shared vision for this affiliation made it easy for us to enter into the opportunity."

Beginning this season, each USL PRO team will play two (2) inter-league games against a single MLS Reserve League opponent, except Antigua (two different opponents).

USL PRO News Release

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

TAMPA, Fla. – Major League Soccer and USL PRO announced today a groundbreaking, multi-year partnership that will enhance the development of professional players in North America, strengthen the competition in both leagues, and establish a solid foundation for future collaboration.

For 2013, the partnership will include interleague play between USL PRO and MLS Reserve League teams, and the establishment of several exclusive team affiliations. These initial programs will immediately improve professional player development in the United States and Canada. Additional technical and commercial initiatives between the two leagues will be announced as they are finalized in the coming months.

“This partnership represents the first step in a long-term alliance between MLS and USL PRO to connect domestic professional soccer through a system that benefits player development, competition and the overall business of our sport,” MLS Executive Vice President of Player Relations & Competition Todd Durbin said. “Over the past several years, USL PRO has made great strides in restructuring in a manner that serves to complement the objectives of MLS. This is a win-win for all involved and it demonstrates our strong commitment to growing North American professional soccer at all levels.”

Each club affiliation will be customized to meet the needs of the respective teams, but all will include at least four players on long-term loan from the MLS parent club to its USL PRO affiliate. Those MLS teams with formal USL PRO affiliates will not participate in the 2013 MLS Reserve League. Neither MLS nor USL PRO clubs are required to enter into an affiliation, and specific affiliations will be announced in the coming days.

Each of the 13 USL PRO teams will compete in two interleague games against MLS Reserve teams. With the exception of Antigua, which will play both of its games at MLS Reserve teams, USL PRO teams have been paired with a single MLS team to play a home and home series. All interleague games will count in both the official USL PRO and MLS Reserve League standings. Details of the fixtures will be announced in conjunction with the forthcoming release of the official 2013 USL PRO schedule.

“USL PRO has for the past several years been the most sophisticated and competitive professional soccer league under MLS,” USL CEO Alec Papadakis said. “This new partnership with MLS will elevate and strengthen the level of competition for domestic professional soccer while simultaneously creating a more sustainable financial model for team owners. As a result, we expect this partnership will forge a seamless system for the development of players and coaches, and promote the expansion of professional soccer into new North American markets.”
